I don't really think too much of the studio version but for me, the 'soul' of the song came out here in this live performance. It's almost like he's actually there watching this go on, he even gets a bit emotional @2:18 or so.
Was this recorded in Los Angeles during the Diamond Dogs tour? I was there and it looks like it. that was the best show I have ever seen put on by a musical group. No one can touch Bowie. he is of a higher caliber than any other.
@Lsn1drlnd1 This is from a talk show, Dinah shore. he followed it up with 'Fame' i think, which is so contrasting in tone, I don't think I've seen a good live version of Fame even though it's one of my favourites. . . by that i mean it's somewhere between 60-1 of Bowie songs ;P

This version absolutely destroys the one done for the album but that's the way recording goes sometimes. . Do too many takes and it loses all it's feel, everything is too perfect and it feels lifeless etc. . This seems to be straight from the heart . . which is just stunning, given it was done on a talk show. Where is the talent like this today? . out there being over looked by Xtc-Factory.
David can be such a SINCERE singer. You believe it, it becomes real. Expressive, relevant, cryptic but knowable. One of my absolutely favourite songs; thanks so much for posting!
I have stated this on one of the other Dinah shore 76 show clips, but if you compare Bowie here to the Dick Cavett 1975 interview where Bowie is fidgeting with the cane looking half dead, he looks much better and clearer headed here.
I'm struck, this is SO AWESOME! He is incredibly authentic by performing this song with such an expression as if he personaly is going to die in 5 years. He sings this song like a melodic goodbye.
