@TheyCallMeRodeo so i got to the back barrel first? i always thought you go to either to the front right or front left first...since its a cloverleaf pattern. i always did this pattern and i never got disqualified...and if you break pattern, you get disqualified...hmmmmmm
you should try a martingale on him or a tie down, its really gonna make him made, but it will help you control his head and help him get more of an arc. :D
@monker08 i did use a tie down. it actually helped...haha. but now all my ppl are telling me to use a hackmore on him so he can stop. he's good throughout the pattern now, but he will not stop. so im gonna see how this is going to go. i did train him to drop his head and flex at the poll when i need his attention. and o-m-g. he looks gorgeous in the show ring! you can see his arabian in there.
@kmich210 NOOOOO!!! hackamores dont give you more breaks. they are actually for lighter headed horses. A fast stop or quick stop bridle is amazing and will stop any horse. also a o-ring combination hackamore and snaffle bit will do wonders. but hackamores dont give you more control. :)
you did really good with him. Great job for his first time. Im taking my horse to our first show this weekend, sooo exciting cant wait, thank you for sharing... XD
My barrel horse used to be an old bag, no one could ride her anywhere without her rearing up, and bucking, throwing her head etc. But in the summer i was determined to knock some sence in to her, and i worked with her everyday, rode her everyday and everywhere, got bucked off a couple times. But now she is exellent! So calm, and sweet. :)
aaw!! that's good. really it takes time to get them where you want them to do...that's good to hear that you accomplished her tho...good job! post a video if you can. i wanna see her..
@kmich210 Yeah. Thanks :) I would love to post a vid of her, but i dont know how, and my parents probly wouldnt want me to. But i have pics of her on my channel. :D
Great job with him I have a friend that bought a horse that acted like this and with lots of time they became AMAZING!!! Keep it up way to stay with him.
Oh yea, definitely! We are so much better now! I took him to the fair this past year for abut 4 days and we did GREAT! it just takes time and lots of patience.
I really worked with him. if he tried to go by the gate i turned him in circles to tell him no...and i said "NO!" I would try to stay away from the gate as much as possible...when he would turn into the gate while your doing the run, i would do the circles and i would go back to the last barrel that you just got done doing and re-start from there. make sure the circles are nice and tight...they don't really like that...it tells my horses no...and it works..for me. hope this works!
I have a mare that use to be very gate sour and sometimes she tries to go back to it... When I was at a show i hand led her all the way up to the gate and stood there and pet her. When I was entering a class I made sure I was not right close to the gate when i would ask her to move in (I started walking from a distance so i had her in motion) keep your reins loose and stay relaxed. Carry a small crop (use w/ care) If you feel your horse try to slow down start gently tapping her on the but as she
moves forward stop tapping. If she stops keep taping till she goes. Increase the power of the tap about every 5 and the moment she steps stop taping and tell her good girl (ooo sorry I forgot to make the whole thing contain male and female context. Sorry if it's a he, I didnt mean to call him a girl) It's also good to click with your taps and sqeeze your legs, but don't kick. Hope this helps! (:
i dont get why you bothered taking him to a barrel race, wasting your money, with just 1 week of training... and there not called "barrel racing shows"... JUST barrel races... or exubitions, but nope, not barrel racing shows...
lol odie looks very high strung!!! i see it was a LITTLE hard for you to handle him at first, and were you sopposed to just canter and trot? well think you did very good.
he isn't hard to handle, i was just really nervous...and so was he...you know how that goes...but he's really good now...we could do whatever we wanted to do...but i made him trpt the first couple patterns so he can get used to it...(different place you kno) but thanks!
Jeez kristen nice song! Are we sad about odie or something if it were me it would have been something a little bit more up-tempo you dirty little fuzz muffin!
I think you handled it fairly well. I think it might help to keep a little more forward motion.Maybe put more arch into the first barrel or ask him to turn it 3 or so times until he stops trying to bow out to the gate. Keep some out side leg on him and just push him through it.The only thing that really bothered me was at the second barrel when you'd give up and just turn him the other direction to get to the second.Best of luck to you.Glad to see you werent goin balls to the walls after 1 week.
