@Baroness1015 Hi, are you german? do you know where we can find out more about him in germany? I mean more than just books, documentary films, etc. I'm planning to visit germany and I'd like to visit some places which has connection to him.
@ph0d0pus Hi! I have German ancestry from my mom's side of the family but I'm not from Germany. I would think the best place to start off visiting would be his grave in Südfriedhof Cemetery, Wiesbaden, Germany. I've always said that if I make it over there, I would go straight there from the airport! Also you can visit his home. You can't go in it, it has been turned into apartments from what I have heard but you can see the outside of it. You can also visit the field where he was shot down.
@ph0d0pus Also, (sorry this is so long) I know you said you wanted more than books but if you can pick up a copy of In the Footsteps of the Red Baron it will give you directions to airfield sites, historical sites and locations of the graves of pilots he shot down and more.
@Baroness1015 Thank you very much for all the infos. Wiesbaden isn't far away from Frankfurt airport I think. Maybe I should do what you said...go straight there. ^____^
@Baroness1015 I've got a plane ticket to Germany. Hopefully I will get the visa too (I live outside Europe so I need a visa). If everything goes well, I finally can go to Wiesbaden. Yay!! ^o^ BTW, those pilots at 2:11-3:00...do you know all their names?
@ph0d0pus Thats great! Take lots of pictures and let me know how things look. I don't know who the pilots are, I have often wondered mself. It would take some invstigating. I would need to know what Jasta the pilots were in, what year it was. Sounds like a fun project to take up...
manfred, you will allways be my hero and the best mentor a "fellow soilder"can have!!!!iv'e read your book about tactics and some of them work "on the ground"too!!!if you where alive today, you would be very suprised just how mant fans you have!!!my favorite story about you involves some wine you and your boys found one day buried under some bushes at a french farm!!!i laughed sooo hard i about fell off my chair!!!how typical of us soligers huh????I SALUTE YOU!!!!my mentor!!!
Those old planes sure look flimsy. Wood, wire, fabric. I understand those rotary engines sprayed out a mist of castor oil that got all over the pilots and made them sick. I'd say it took a lot of guts just to get in them and fly them into the sky each day--much less get shot at from both the ground and air. Sad to realize these people are all dead--many didn't survive the war. Fascinating, though tragic, time in history.
@DandAinTac When your passion is aircraft it becomes apart of you,so if you think the plane that Manfred flew is flimsy then your calling him flimsy as well,in other words that plane became a dragon with Manfred's in the cockpit. Manfred's skills and mentality were ahead of the curve running a muck in a tri which was state of the art for it's time, not to mention the prestige of being a pilot so here... you hold this rifle and give me flimsy :)
@DandAinTac You know I thought the same thing you did at first but then i became glad that they passed away during WW1 and they didn't get to see or turned into Nazis. If they had lived WW1 and continued to WW2 their heroic deeds of WW1 would have been forgotten and the world would have thought of them as Nazis and not heros during WW2!! Im not happy that they passed away, they were all very young, but Its better that they didn't have anything to do with WW2
Brown isn still credited with Von Richtofens downing. The ground fire theory is just that...a theory proposed post war by the media and some surviving infantry, decades after Brown's death. The "Kaput" comment is also bunk. Brown was always very modest about the whole affair (and was just happy to have saved his friend Wop May) however he stated the Baron was seen to slump in his cockpit after he fired a burst into the plane. We will never know for sure.
I'm virtually certain that the tall guy is Hauptmann Schwarzenberger, a staff officer. They were all boys as the video clearly shows, but this fact is hammered home from the line of pilots from 2.11 onwards - many of these boys did not survive.
Don't be ridiculous, only a Canadian would say that. Where in gods name did you read that German pilots were afraid of Canadians.Or any less so than anybody else.Get a handle on the ego, classic xenophobic nationalistic nonsense.
Roy Brown didn't kill him, the lucky one could be an australian soldier of the infantry, S. Evans... but his death is still a mistery. By the way, he is a Legend
The first time I saw this I cried. All those men, on both sides, were heros. I hate that their young lives were cut short. Manfred has been my hero for quite some time. I love his way of thinking, he was a Soldier to the core! I pray that he has found the rest and peace that he deserves. He lives forever in our hearts.
@Baroness1015 Cant Belive Theres Still People So Honor To Hero I Found Nowdays Human Was Racist And Idiot At Least He Deserve Hes Rest In The Entenity Bed Mabye He Went To Heaven Or Hell ?
@PlushGallade I can't quite understand what you typed. I have read many things about him and never once did I see anything that said he was a racist. As for being an idiot, I guess thats a personal conclusion though I don't think you have anything to support that claim either. When you're able to strip away the fact that we were at war and just look at the man himself you can see he was a brave and honorable man. As a Soldier, I admire his military bearing and loyalty to his men.
@PlushGallade Well then who are you calling racist? I don't understand what you typed. Not trying to be mean but that paragraph makes no sense to me. The first time I read it I actually wondered if English wasn't a first language . if its not thats fine, thats not an issue. It just kind of looks like what happens when you run a phrase through an online translator. Again, I'm not trying to be mean or a smart ass. I just saw the word racist and thought thats what you meant.
AMAZING.!! simply wonderful. My husband is a direct descendent of Manfred and he has the same love of animals and anything technical. It is so wonderful how genes can survive.
That is impossible, seeing as he was killed at the age of 25 having no girlfriend or female partner (there are rumors he was gay), therefore having no offspring. Unless you mean he is a direct family member, you are obviously lieing.
Manfred von Richthofen was certainly a hero. Germans of all generations should not forget what MvR, along with many other young German pilots, did for their country, ultimately sacrificing their own lives for future generations. May they all rest in peace in Valhalla.
