the klicthkos would nt last 2 minutes in a slug fest wis these guys, ppl were brought up more naturally rougher then, modern fighters r too robotic,to calculated to give any problems to an intinctive fighter wis a die hard determination
@Da2faan yeah but if a modern fighter like a klitschko or a sam peter lands one of those calculated "robotic" bombs they could end the fight just as easily with these greats. yes they took more punishment back then but knocked out is knocked out no matter how many punches you can take.
Quarry was a tough guy but that's it. A very poormans Joe Frazier at best. He had a good left hook nothing else. The Klitschkos would destroy Quarry jurdoc11
The Klitschkos are such great fighters that nobody cares about the division. This is the worst I have seen the heavyweights in more than 50 of following professional boxing. The emphasis is in size but these giants are in general too slow and unidimensional. What kind of style the Ks have? Long jab, long jab...boom right hand. When was the last time you saw an accurate, strong and fast 4 punch combination from a heavyweight fighter? Or a real war for 12 rounds with both exhausted?
Lyle essentially a big upper body-muscular guy, who was a mediocre fighter with severe stamina problems. Quarry also mediocre and does not stand among the great heavyweights. Quarry far too limited and untalented to beat the Klitschkos.
@tbcass Quarry was not past his prime when he beat Lyle. This was a good fight. I was there that night. Lyle was not slow. He was beating Ali for 10 rounds, but the ref stopped it in the 11th. Lyle had Foreeman on the floor twice. This was a great win for Quarry. Quarry fought Patterson twicem a draw and a win for Jerry. He had Floyd down twice in each fight. Great wins over Mathis, Shavers, Foster and Spenser also. RIP Jerry.
well said mrjoshjones 1.quarry looked fitter and boxed beautifully, he had switched trainers to gil clancy from teddy bentham and ditched his father as manager.jerrys best fight by a long way against a dangerous opponent
9-3 Winner Jerry Quarry, great performance by Jerry Quarry. He showed what experience was all about in this fight against a harder punching fighter. I like how he moves on his feet too.
@itsareligionofpeace -Ken Norton beat him later on in his career, when he was thoroughly washed up. I heard he took the fight on short notice also. And Jimmy Ellis somehow defeated jerry in the WBA tournament in 1968. He must have had an off night. RIP Jerry Quarry
@itsareligionofpeace Quarry was great, I loved him and his brother but Ali and Frazier not only beat him. he was stopped by George Chuvalo, beaten by Jimmy Ellis and Floyd Patterson in fights I thought he would win. Great, great fighter, but he let guys who he should have beaten, get him on off nights. He was great though. RIP Jerry and Mike Quarry.

alot of pundits say that Quarry was the best heavyweight to never become champion. Hard to disagree. If Ali and Frazier kicked my ass, I'd brag about it
Excellent fight. both guys are very underrated two very very tough guys. Lyle was great power puncher and countered punch well against Quarry here but Quarry just kept punching and out punched Lyle in most of the rounds.
Amen! Thanks for posting this entire fight!Just about any heavyweight bout from the 60s and 70s brings a lot of nostalgia and makes one rueful that they don't box like those great Titans did these days.
Quarry Was A very good fighter with allot of skills. He was just a little to small for the heavy weights of that time.Great fight. Amazing as Quarry came of some beg losses before that and was retired.
Lyle was a very good fighter ,big guy and undefeated at the time.
Is it just me, or did it look like Quarry was actually losing weight in the later rounds??? If so, no wonder he was bouncin' around like a spring chicken near the end, lol.
Great fight. Quarry used all his experience to exploit Lyle's technical shortcomings. I think Quarry just about threw every punch in the book. Amazing conditioning on the part of both fighters. I doubt whether we will ever see the like of these two gladiators again!
Thanks for posting. Jerry Quarry's heart made up for ability. maurice

The great Jerry Quarry at his best, toying with a much bigger and harder
punching man who would go on to fight Ali in '75, KO'd Shavers, and
nearly decimate George Foreman.
Great, Great Fighter!!!!!!

Quarry is so great to watch because he can slug, box, fight on the inside, and counter punch all proficiently.

@jurdoc11 I was gonna say the same thing....in the opposite direction: The Klitschkos. are far too limited and untalented to beat Quarry.

Look at Jerry go!!!
Crisp, slick & smooth.
Ron Lyle (pre Eddie Futch) was still a pondrous amatuer.
Chickie Ferrara made him a much better fighter, he changed styles
several times.
When I saw him against Fili Moala (San DIego, before Cooney), he was
a mover, slick & spry against a slow footed fighter, excellent in fighter, later.
He clearly got upstaged by a better fighter that night, putting Jerry Quarry
right back in the heavyweight picture,

If only they had "Cruiserweights" then. Jerry would have been the champ. He was a tough guy.

@triggert531 ---totally accurate. it is a shame he never won title. And what a great guy and sportsman too

Quarry was very good.
He really should have fought, won at light heavy weight instead of heavy weight.
Ali and Frazier were the only ones to defeat him.
