It's been 3 year since I last responded to this video, and I still watch it a couple times a year, I am so glad it exists, it's good to see Gary and hear the Gary-isms. My favorite Garyism was when people who would sit and right away start asking for to be thinner, or "No pimples", Gary would squint the way he did, and say 'Hey! It's a pencil, not a wand!". I have a sign in my booth with that saying on it and it still gets laughs and reminds customers to settle down and have a good time.
I am so glad to have gotten to know about Gary thru the Fasen website, and thru Richmond's and Hurtado's work and then to know more about the man himself thru this video. If I had worked for him, I probably would never have burnt out, like I have burnt out on my own in the last couple of years. He would have told me to suck it up and move on.
I'm looking forward to working again, mainly because of continually looking and learning from Gary and his protege's work.
Guys, I've been a t-shirt artist for 18 years, and I have just taught myself how to caricature as I had been doing shirt portraits all that time. Gary was one of the top guys I wanted to emulate. Then I found out that the rest of the best were all emulating him as well. In Summer of '93, I was working 115 hours a week in Myrtle Beach. Kid you not. I wish to goodness I could have done a summer with Gary. I just didn't know about him back then.
Gary told me something when I was 14 years old that never left. A true artist rarely enjoys his own work. Use it for motivation in the search for your next great piece. These days more than ever I wish I had my uncle still. RIP
I had only met Gary a couple of times. I worked for Tom Richmond at Valleyfair, then for Steve Fasen at Universal, Orlando. The limited exposure I had of him was great, he seemed like a very likable artist.
very cool. i've been doing comic books pro off and on for 12 years,i've done airbrush pro for 10 years,i've only tried maybe 4 or 5 caricatures ever,but they're fun and i want to try many more. they're fun to airbrush. thanks to this video i now know the source!
He set me up pretty good to be doing caricatures on my own before he died. I bought one of those desks from the southwest location from him shortly before he died, its definitely one of my most prized possessions. it took a long time for me to delete him from my cell phone list, I kept wanting to call him up to ask a quick question. Thanks so much for providing something to help with the coping.
I remember once I came to him because I was all upset that I wasn't catching on too fast, it was one of those rants that bled into other artistic problems and while I was moaning he cut me off and said 'Good luck finding someone who will pay for whining!', I still remember that when I am having trouble on a job, it keeps me going and gives me a good laugh.
I only now just found this, I only worked that one summer for Gary, but he taught me a skill that will always be proud of and continues to be useful almost every day.

Gary was a funny and talented man. The last time I saw him was at the NCN. He was full of fun, laughter and jokes.
This was definitely a shock to my systerm. He will be greatly missed.

I worked for Gary at Great America for three summers 1992-1994. Here it is Dec. 2007 and I just found out that Gary passed away.

I only met him once, he came walking up with Steve when I was getting drawn in Orlando (when I was supposed to be working!).
He said, "I would have drawn him uglier!"
Sounds like I got the proper Gary experience.

I got drawn by Gary at the Tulsa State fair in 1983, when he and his bro, Steve were starting out together.
I Cherish that Drawing. He demonstrated how effortless (and profitable) drawing faces could be.
