I started listening to this sort of music recently - I gotta ask - does this require ANY talent at all? It seems like a DJ just finds some good songs that are in the same key and/or groove, then plays them together. How is that an art form? I get it with Danger Mouse - some of those mashups are very clever. But this stuff - it's like making a mix tape when I was in 8th grade or something. As a jazz musician, I simply do not get it.
@msterliz Anyone can do it, but not everyone can do it well. It's very time based, knowing when the drop of one song starts so you can hit it at the right time. Getting a smooth flowing set is a challenge for all. May DJ's find samples from one song to throw in before or during the transition, which can be difficult, especially when you only have 2 decks. There's a lot of tap tempo-ing, and switching from one tempo to another without it sounding like shit isn't that easy either.
@spolly18 it's also about judging the room and deciding what tracks to play that will get a good reaction, and finding good new tracks that people won't know and giving them exposure- supposedly dj'ing is 70% the music you play and 30% mixing skills :)
this makes me wanna go back in time . Shes soo AWESOME
