you gotta jump to the high side right away to counterbalance the weight... don't worry about bringing it into irons or anything... especially in low wind. i used to capsize 420s all the time. i could do the walkover and right the boat in about 30 seconds probably and all i did was get on the centerboard, bring it up, and make sure i was in the right place when it came back up
My friend and I turtle our boat. We had a l'equipe. I swam around as my friend made it come up. But when I was half way around, he got it up and it started sailing away and then it turtled again after sailing a few metres away. It was annoying but funny.
Hey I was basically razzing you for your spelling. BTW death rolls aren't specifically windward capsize. Rather, it is Karman excitation oscillation leading to uncontrolled rolling due to inadequate damping. You can end up in the drink to either side but windward is more common. This may be simply because we tend to sit to "windward" even on dead runs, or it is because of aerodynamic asymmetry during the roll (sails max camber not at centerline)
@vibratingstring Ok even if that what a death roll is where in the video is he doing that. And capsizing to leeward is way more common then to windward. This is what a death roll is: a death roll is the act of broaching to windward, putting the spinnaker pole into the water and causing a crash-gybe of the boom and mainsail, which sweep across the deck and plunge down into the water. And the camber is never at centerline, so that has nothing to do with it.
You are confusing mere broaching with death rolling. Not the same thing. Learn your terminology. You can broach without ever death rolling, and you can recover from a death roll before actually broaching.
On a laser, death rolling often starts in moderate to stiff wind (greater than 15 knots) when on a near dead run, boom all the way out, but vang too loose. When the the vortex street forms, if it happens to have the same frequency as the natural roll period, you death roll
@vibratingstring You have no idea what your talking about, a death roll has nothing to do with oscillation, and is a windward capsize. And there is no vortex street that has the same frequency as the "natural roll".
@pgihockey13 Be careful who you say "yYou have no idea what your talking about" to!
Do you even know what a vortex street is? Do you know what resonance is? You contradict yourself. A post back you said leeward capsize. "death roll" was being used as a term long before you were born. A 'death roll' can only happen when it is windy and you are running. It is uncontrollable rolling due to aerodynamically excited resonance. Windward capsize is merely "windward capsize." Get your terms right!
@vibratingstring Your so stupid kid, Id argue with you more but you play the damn violin and your name is vibratingstrings so I feel kind of bad shittin on a faggot
@vibratingstring Ok, Search sailing in the search bar and there is a video called "Sailing" watch it, it is 6 minutes long. At 12, 35, 40 and 55 seconds are all examples of death rolls. Its when you capsize to windward
Whew. Lot of hate here considering these people are just having fun and learning by doing. I liked this video.
