The Lieutenant needed to get all that stuff off his chest and Jesus was letting him do that. This scene is actually pretty realistic from that aspect because I have personally experienced this.

Never get tired of this great film. Wildly underrated. Went miles over stupid Leonard Maltin's head. The Catholic guilt is there,for sure,but there's a lot more going on. This is the American way,the American dream gone way off the rails,in the gutter. Powerful performance by Keitel,who should have several Oscars by now. He tries to save himself but far too late. It all goes to seed: the drugs,his gambling. The Mets sure can't save him. (I think the Dodgers actually won that playoff.)

in fact, the church scene was totally improvised, keitel wanted to make a truly repentance with god cause, as you know, he wad a drug addict and in the movie, he took real drugs . But he wanted to stop and make repentance to god so this scene is very powerful because of this too. He stop taking drugs forever after this movie so its a good ending finally ; )
