The song was based on an African legend. The Lion was an African king who, when a European army chased him down, refused to die and instead went into a deep sleep beneath an African lake. You can almost here "Eu mbube" ("You are The Lion") in the mistaken changes that the Tokens made when they imported the song in the '50's--and I wish someone with some semblance of a feeling for language would change it back and give the song back some of its meaning.
