  • Sega of Japan left Sega of America uninformed of the Saturn when it was developed. With the Playstation over the horizon, SoA became more worried so they developed the 32X and when Saturn was finally announced in North America, they did not want to support two 32-bit platforms. This is why the 32X was left unsupported by 1996.

  • so jan 2001 peter moore says we SEGA will no longer be in hardware business in march 2001 dreamcast is no more funny thing is this dreamcast was still selling like hot cakes in my opion peter sold out to xbox or micosoft games like shenmue 2 was never released for the US dreamcast but is was ported to xbox as i said in firest comment peter joined xbox in 2003 xbox contorler looks like dreamcast too im gusseing peter moore puled the plug of dreamcast for money?

  • why not emulate the 32x to show the viewers?

  • hey, that system was awesome!!!

  • I had the 32x, It was a good add-on. It had flaws but not everything is perfect, especially back in those days. The sega genesis was one heck of a reliable work horse. It took all sorts of abuse to both the games and the console and would still work. I thought the 32x was a great add-on, you could still play all of your regular sega games threw it plus the new games they only made a handful of. My personal favorite 32x game was Metalhead, a Mech warrior battle bot.

  • I'l admit the 32x was a faliure commercially, but from a collectors point of view i kinda like it, it has some interesting features and theres definately games on it that are at least playable and enjoyable. also it works as a neat add on for the megadrive cos it seems to act as a region bypass thing, i can play japanese and american games on my european megadrive hassle free which is nice

  • I only have knuckels chaotix.

  • I can't believe he just fucking dropped the poor thing. What a dipshit!

And for what it's worth, the 32X was apparently the climax of the rivalry between Sega's East and West divisions- SoJ had some serious pride issues and pretty much snubbed SoA at every given opportunity. SoA took the initiative with the 32X because the Japs didn't even have the courtesy to /tell/ them about the Saturn until the very last minute. They were quite retarded, really.

Still a pretty classy system, I think!

  • @Prinsdam your partially correct, SoA was making another system, the Sega Neptune, but SoJ had the Saturn pretty much ready so instead of tossing the Neptune, they shrinked it and made it into an addon so thats why we got the 32X. Instead of using the genesis to death, they should of came out with the Neptune a year earlier and released the Saturn a year later.

  • @Prinsdam that's really sad. i wonder if we would have dreamcast 2 right now if that internal war hadn't happened between the two divisions of sega. guess we'll never know...

  • @ 2:43, did he say " Virgin Fighter" ??

  • Sorry, but if you're going to film yourself, learn to speak and enunciate first! Do you live in a trailer?

  • Why did you break it? You could have sold it on Ebay for $30 dollars or more

  • Why did you break it? You could have sold it on Ebay for $30+

  • dude everyone nintendo is better

  • you like a hillbilly who just found that SEGA add-on on his forks while scratching your back with it

  • What really impresses me is how everybody hated the 32X when it first came out but now everybody wants one for their old school video game collection.

  • A add on for the PS2???That would be great. I still play the PS2!!!

  • NINTENDO FAN BOY WARNING!!!!!!

    NINTENDO FAN BOY WARNING!!!!!!

    NINTENDO FAN BOY WARNING!!!!!!

    NINTENDO FAN BOY WARNING!!!!!!

  • That's why SEGA failed in the hardware bussines.

  • the sega 32x and sega cd fail big time

  • Hindsight is 20 20! if Sega knew then what they must know now there's no way they would have released the 32X!

  • 4 games! thats massive for a 32X collection! its hard enough just finding 1!

  • because it's a pile of fucking shit, but still better than the shitty Virtual Boy and about 9 million times better than the Atari Jaguar

  • let me guess cause it was a peice of shit?

  • Hey guys, what do you think were the biggest console flops:

    A: The 32X

    B: The Virtual Boy

    C: The Atari Jaguar

  • the 32x was, the jaguar had AVP :)

  • @smartwarlord yeah the 32X did have Knuckles Chaotix which I heard was a pretty good game

  • @AngrySportsFan 32X! the jaguar was OK, Virtual Boy was pretty close to being the biggest flop, but i honestly think 32x was the stupidest console ever made since the Saturn was coming out just a few months before the fact.

  • jaguar sucked balls i should know i owned 1

  • They all were uber flops, cool ideas though, but I would have to say the C. Jaguar.

  • @AngrySportsFan - B the virtual boy, no one had it, no one cared. The graphics were red for god's sake. I played it once and got a dull headache.

  • @arisechicken82 Yeah also I forgot another flop- the CD-i I mean it made 3 awful Zelda games and a bad Mario game, but yeah I personally think it's a tie between the Virtual Boy and 32x

  • i sold mine not that long ago and i dont regret it

  • I didn't know there was a Sega 32X until 2000 when I found a game called Knuckles Chaotix for 32X. Sega should've not make this in the first place, should've released as a console under the name "Neptune", but cancelled it and made another add-on, WHAT'S UP WITH DAT?!

  • whats up with dat?

    whats up with your spelling?

  • What up with that?

    What up with that?

    OOOOOOOOO-EE!

    What up with that?

    What up with that?

  • 32x sucks balls

  • Great, a 14 year old telling me about 25 year old video game equipment, lol. I had a 32x when this kid's dad was in kindergarten.

  • Against my better judgment, I got one not long after they were released in 1995. Couldn't figure out to attach it my Genesis with those stupid metal prongs. Took it back and told the store it was defective. Fortunately, the store gave me my money back, so I didnt' waste it on this abomination of a video game "system".

  • No 360 would die because theres a chance of getting the RROD

  • yeah it kinda sucks we wont be able to play gears of war 10 years from now cuz the 360 will go the way of the dinosaur

  • 360 will fail just like sega 32x it sucks

  • THE 32X WILL most likely work if you turn it on now. after 17 years!

my 3 week old 360 wouldnt!

  • I feel your pain.

  • LOL yup

  • 3 Reasons why Sega went down hill.

1.) After the Genesis they started rushing on their release dates for their consoles.

2.) Released a bunch of add on's for the Genesis.

3.) Lack of third party developers after the Saturn's Failure Sega wasn't trusted anymore.

I honestly think the Dreamcast would of kicked PS2 and Nintendo's ass. If they had waited on their release of the Dreamcast. Which would of give them more time to add more features to that system. For example DVD Features.

  • SegaSammy will return to the console market next year with a new system codenamed

"Ringedge" which will be based off the touch screen arcade board of the same name. Send me a message for details.

  • Wow you really wont stop ranting and raving on how you dont like the 32X. If you really don't want it I would be glad to take it off your hands. Send me an email and I'll pay for the shipping. As a good collector I dont let my game systems collect dust and I also dont drop my game systems. Your no game collector. The real question is not how the 32X fails but how you fail.

  • You're very opinionated.

This flop is past news we've all heard before but, why not look beyond the flop and enjoy the classic arcade feel of the games?

  • The Sega 32X was pretty good in performance, but as you said it was released WAY too late. Sega CD was similar, it got off to a slow start and only picked up while the Sega Saturn was being developed, else the Sega CD would've made Sega a lot more than it did with games like Lunar and the better version of the game Snatcher. Sega also tried to be stupid later and made a combo addon called the Sega 32XCD but it only really made Night Trap look better lol.

  • 32X was fucking awesome. I owned at least 1/3 of the games for it and they were really fun.

Jedite's analysis is dead on. 32X died because Sega obviously had no intention of supporting it as a next gen console. Saturn was their next gen, so 32X really had no reason to exist. What the fuck were they thinking?

  • 32X fuckin sucks it just fuckin sucks, the sega cd was pretty cool but 32x was shit

  • I like 32x. I don't know why, but I would like to have this piece of history.

  • I had one but it's nicer to just get a sonic compilation because the only good game was sonic 3d and that isn't even that great lol. It was a pain switching seca cd and 32x back and forth just to see what looked like regular sega games with more sprites and psuedo 3d.

  • Audio lags but good vid.

  • 3:49 now i laugh if it doesnt work, 32x now it would cost around 50-60 € if ur lucky on ebay, in the future it will cost more

  • yeah it may be lame for back in the day but y'know, thats what makes it unique! like the virtual boy! The sega 32x will just keep goin up in price

  • but now the virtual boy cost too much ^^ i just bought some consoles on ebay because i collect them, for example an year agò i bought a dreamcast with 6 games and driving device (i dont know how is it called in english, in italy it's "volante" ) for only 69 + 10 € hella nice ^^

  • 2.13 so you lost one of your 32x cables, well that proves that the 32x is a piece of shit when it comes to getting it set up

  • its anoying having a sega megadrive (genesis) then the sega cd add on, thats 2 power bricks and the 32x has its own power brick so thats 3, plus all the cords stickin out from the back its just a mess.... The sega multi mega on the other hand is awesome!! its a sega cd and megadrive (genesis) in one and its small and compact and can be portable to play music thats cool!

  • to crazyforagame

maybe it would be if you didnt haveto pay twice the price of the 2 systems seperately

  • You sound retarted " you know"

  • you say " you know" alot lol. Good vid

  • You know

you're right about him saying you know a lot

    you know

    i notice it and stuff

  • smartass...lol

  • you are having the same problem i did, you have lost your cable, i bought one that came without cables, and if you do have all the cables is it worth it? no, because there are hardly any games

  • Nintendo made a mess too.

Remember that shitty VIRTUAL BOY you Nintendo fan boys deny existed.

I think anybody would have a 32x over a VIRTUAL BOY.

    Fuck Nintendo

    SEGA FOR THE WIN MOTHERFUCKER

  • Any Nintendo fanboy would want to ignore that the VB existed. Why? It fucking sucked! And you're forgetting about all of Sega's OTHER failures. You know, everything after the Genesis. I like both Sega and Nintendo, and Sony too. I just appreciate each console for what it is.

  • I remembered the Virtual Boy. Good thing I didn't own that piece of garbage.

  • @damiannerd The Virtual Boy, the overrated N64, and the first GBA was Nintendo's worst.

  • @damiannerd Hell I was nintendo kid. And even I will never deny how much crap the vb was. That and zelda wind waker two biggest fuck up's in nintendo's history!!

  • @damiannerd Lol, but the Virtual Boy actually had a few good games on it. What did the 32X have for good games? I can't think of anything.

  • @JMFSpike Knuckles' Chaotix, Mortal Kombat II, Afterburner

  • @noescom Ok. I don't ever really hear people talk about the good 32X games. I knew about Knuckles Chaotix, but I couldn't recall if it was actually considered good or not.

  • @damiannerd, if Sega was so great, why did they go out of business (in hardware?)

  • @dciguy01 peter moore is one reason japan was still selling dreamcast and games up to the year 2007 back to peter moore ending up joining xbox in 2003 now in EA peter was vice president of sega america in the 90s-1999 that year thay got rid of berine stoler he was the guy who f-up the sega saturn buy not geting much rpg games for the saturn like final fantasy and in e3 late 1990s saying saturn not are future so peter became president of sega in 1999-2003 this store continues

  • @steveandbobsho jedite did LordHershebel suck your dick and make you cum?

  • Let's say that you didn't have a Genesis. You'd have to buy a Genesis for $130 and a 32X for $150. That's almost $300, which is what the Playstation was priced at. Of course you're going to wait for the Sony system.

Bottom line: Nakayama should never have ordered the creation of the 32X.

  • If you were to buy a Sega CD and 32X for the 16 it would cost a lot of money. And If 32X was the biggest flop for Sega, which is the biggest flop ever ? and then i speak of all consoles and hand-held portables ? which didn't sell at all ? i mean worse than Dreamcast ? which my brother actually owned for a short time ^_^

  • Well it couldnt have been that bad. I mean yes in the eyes of the consumers at the time but if it had a steady library of games it could have ran alongside the saturn

  • the 2nd worst sega console in my opinion is the multi mega, which is a combimation of a mega drive and a mega cd, im sure in the u.s you have your own name for it

  • Too bad 32X never supported

on the console business. I thought is a

cd but is a cartridge. I hope you talk

about playdia from Band dai check out on youtube

  • i got rid of this not long after i bought it on ebay

i was real pissed when i found out it came without the cables!

  • 3. Sega's resources became somewhat fragmented because they tried to support two new major environments at virtually the same time: the 32X and the Saturn. Sooner or later, Sega had to decide which environment had priority and concentrate on that one only. The Saturn offered better potential than the 32X so Sega would default to that, but not without first fragmenting itself, causing it to lose out to more organized efforts by Nintendo and Sony.

  • Why did the 32X fail:

    1. People who knew about the 32X likely also knew about the Saturn. Customers couldn't fathom what direction Sega wanted to take or assumed since Saturn was more advanced, that was the way to go.

    2. Developer support, such as devkits, for the 32X had a very bumpy start. Plus, software developers were either confused to Sega's direction or simply assumed that the more advanced hardware was what the future was and opted to develop on Saturn instead of 32X.

  • The 32x was a bad idea from the start, because the timing was WAY off regardless of what it had to offer. They should have kept their focused on the Saturn at the time.

The Sega CD, however, was actually a pretty darn cool add on. I guess developers for the most part didn't know how to capitalize on it, but hey, at least you could make a Top 10 list if you do your research.

  • Here's my honest opinions on the Mega Drive and the add-ons:

Mega Drive= One of the best consoles in history with a massive library of awesome games.

Mega CD= Underrated console with some great games

32x= Horribly unsupported system with about 4 or 5 decent titles.

  • yeah

knuckles chaotix was kinda fun but thats it

  • Metal Head, Tempo, Virtua Racing, Virtua Fighter, Kolibri...

  • hm

i dont like metal head and Tempo

but you got a point with virtua racin

  • Tempo is quite an acquired taste. It's kind of like Dynamite Heady, it grows on you after a while.

  • Tempo is good, its just weird when you first try it (a cheeseburger attacks you in one level when you're in something's mouth).

  • Yeah Sega does made a big mistake creating another add-on in an attempt let the Genesis live longer than SNES. It's one of hte major failures of gaming and plus there are no good games on the 32X (I think but only a few good games).

  • Even though the 32X failed Knuckles Chaotix is still a great game.

  • I still think the 32x is awesome. Even though it had a horrible selection of games, a lot of the games were quite good. Virtua Racing was the best racing game at the time, Star Wars was fun, Doom was fun except it only had 15 levels (wtf?), After Burner looked a lot closer to the arcade, Metal Head was awesome. I don't regret buying one.

benzo8686 is right about SegaCD. It had a lot of good games that people like James never talk about.

  • What other games were good on Sega CD.

  • Shining Force, spider man vs kingpin, mickey mania,Lunar silver star,Lunar Eternal Blue

Vay, popful mail, Dark wizard, Bari Armour, just to name a few.

  • Your sega 32x suck balls comparing it with my 32x AND YOU DO NOT HAVE THE KNUCKLES CHAOTIX

  • nice snes box back there. yea if the people who made the 32x still own their houses there is no justice in the world

  • Sega CD failed because most of their games were shitty full motion and only Sonic CD is worth playing.

Now for Sega 32X why did it fail so bad was because it's suppose to be 32 bit yet it looks like shit and there's barely any games to play on it.

  • sega cd had a few good games not just sonic cd

are you just saying this because thats what avgn says?

  • Maybe but at least I often listen to my fans.

  • Comment removed

  • Sonic CD is very overrated IMO, I did not like it all. There have been MUCH better games on the Sega CD than Sonic CD.

The Sega CD had the potential, but it was ultimately brought down with SOJ's horrible marketing, way too high costs, and overload of mediocre FMV games.

The 32x on the other hand, had no reason to have a release as the Saturn was already on it's way.

  • Sega of America did not invent the 32X, it was started by Sega Japan and finished in the US as a stop-gap until the Saturn's release, also Knuckles Chaotix is not a killer app, in fact it's actually one of the worst Sonic games from that period, and was savaged by all the magazine critics on release.

  • This thing fucking destroyed sega big time!

  • HARSH

  • I completely agree with you, the 32X only hurt Sega, not only when it was out but for the rest of their lifetime as a hardware manufacturer, I wish they hadn't bothered with the SegaCD either (though I know it had some good games) they Should've just concentrated on the Saturn, failing that though, if they hadn't bothered with the 32X they could've done more with the SegaCD instead, there was no need to make 2 upgrades, especially when they hadn't even found the full potential of the first yet.

  • I think it confused people do I wait for the saturn, or what! The games were shit! Just destroyed the brand! People didn't trust buying sega after it!

  • does your mother count XD

  • Knuckles Chaotix is the Killer App for me.

  • Basically without the cable you mentioned you would get video but no 3d parts. All you would see is the 2d parts like selection screens and backgrounds.

  • bad example about saying about selling anthor add on for the ps2 as the ps3 comes out cuase for a fair time sales of ps2 outstripped sales of the ps3(just pointing out i like all consols)

  • The Genesis was on "life support" and Sega was trying to outdo its nemesis, the Super NES with the SCD and 32X add-ons. The Sega CD sucked, but the 32X was more worse when it was released. Hell, the 32X was released around 8 months prior to the release of the Saturn. Plus, SEGA also planned to release another system called Neptune (which was just a stand-alone 32X), however, SEGA screwed up their own marketing and this is a reason why the 32X FAILED miserably.

  • At least SEGA finally did something right when they released the Dreamcast, even though that also ended up dying an undeserved death.

  • Both the Saturn and Dreamcast were great consoles. SEGA of America invented the 32X, because they had no idea that SEGA of Japan was already working on the Saturn. So when the 32X was annouced SOA of caught of gaurd.

  • if they released it like 2 years ago...it would be that most F***ing advanced system out there...well...if they tuned up the graphics. But come on! Sega Dreamcast owns the wii so much its not funny!

  • meth much?

  • one of the great addons

  • you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know...

  • I always wanted a 32x when I had a genesis/Megadrive, and i managed to get one recently with 14 32x games including knuckles chaotix, and I must say its pretty good, lots of fun..

  • everybody loves the 32x though. Thats why theres more fasination with it than saturn on you tube. You love it or love to hate it. But you got to be bitter gayboy to say games like virtua fighter, tempo, kolibri bla bla bla are crap though

  • This guy should go on Oprah so the whole world can here his intense video game stories.

  • seriously play knuckles chaotix. my favorite sonic game...seriously:P

  • thank u

  • thank u

  • I agree, the only 2 reasons i bought a 32X was just like jedite1, im a collector and player, and the second reason is like you, to play Knuckles Chaotix because it is still a Sonic based game, even if its a little bit flawed.

  • I bought a 32x for the bloody blackthorne, the amazing shadow squadron, The exellent am2 virtua fighter, virtua racing, The unfinished but violent doom, afterburner with a flight stick, starwars, kolibri....... I never even considered buying !!another!! god damn sonic tails knuckles game. Sonic 3d was great though but I don't really consider it to be the same thing at all.

  • Jedite you rock but the 32x kiks ass and you all know it!

  • Oh thought is a disc but is

    a cartage i got it

  • haha yeah...Jedite from sailormoon, you should come up with a better name

  • pretty much everything sega made failed to make the cut commercially or financially, (I mean after genesis and compared to sony and nintendo...) but that never ment any of their systems didn't have good games. example: If you say shadow squadron was not at least good for its time then you either don't know your game stuff or your a blatent nintendo fanboy or simply hate space games..

  • I would buy a 32x for my sega cd/genesis, but it just looks like a diarhea mess when all three system are put together. And I can barely get both beasty plugs into an outlet let alone adding another one.

  • Exactly what Angry Video Game Nerd had to say about it.

  • Well okay it might've been a sasd cash-in, but dropping it on the floor to prove a point is just stupid!

  • u know

  • is it just me or are your lip movments un acurate to your audio. wierd

  • Sorry but i disagree , it doesent deserve to collect dust, some of the games are great its worth having nowadays since its cheap to buy, you can get a cable cheap on ebay. Its worth owning for: Kolibri, Blackthorne, 36 great holes, knuckles chaotix, space harrier, after burner, star wars, virtua racing, virtua fighter, steller assault, MK2, metal head.

  • i smell an otaku...

  • i smell an otaku...

  • the 32X is an unpopular attempt to sell the

beta of the saturn. (thus why sega saturn was

    ALSO 32 bit).

  • actually it was a unsolid beta semi-system aimed at selling the saturn while it was still in development, but the use of cartridges discouraged others from buying the 32x AND the saturn , sorry for the miss-fact. there.

  • were any games actually better for 32x than 16 bit genisis? i mean i kinda wanted to try out mortal kombat, is it any closer to arcade version?

  • no.

  • Knuckles Chaotix was fun.

  • Dude stop pretending to be so hardcore and angry. Seriously you can't be taken seriously when you are sporting the sailor moon postering. Kinda creepy rather than anything else.

  • Sailormoon was pretty popular with both boys and girls.

  • yeah, when they started doing that phrase, they were screwed!!!

  • and then came the virtual console

  • If That Was A Model 2, You Don't Need The Connector. Oh Wait, I'm Talking About The Metal Prongs.

  • The 32X is one of the biggest reasons why I quit playing video games--for a time--not permanently , mind you. While I enjoyed many games on tons of systems, I got sick of the lies and the false promises. The irony is that nowadays, the 32X gets brought up quite a bit in the failure vein, while the same people (myself included) are enjoying the types of things the 'X rarely delivered, and if managed right, could have been ahead of its time in a huge way.

  • Make a background research before posting a video. 32x came before Saturn and it was due to Sega of America who worked years for the 32x where Sega of Japan worked on Saturn. The problem was Sega of US wanted the 32x released becouse they worked for the Console but PSX and Saturn had the better Technology and Graphics. Actually Sega lost it`s respect after the Sega CD which only had minimal enhanced Technology.

  • The 32x was actually a good alternative to the Saturn if you didn't want to spend the ridiculous amount of money (near $400 when new iirc) It had the exact same processors as the Saturn did although at a slightly lower clock of 23.5 MHz instead of 28.7 MHz. With less RAM and a less powerful VDP.

  • You could say its like a Pentium vs. a Celeron, just a cheaper alternative to the Saturn. It's too bad that people moved onto the Saturn so quickly, because the few games that were made to run on it uses nowhere near the maximum potential of the 32x.

  • True but I would rather have held out and bought a Saturn, the 32X just was not worth it, the only good game was probably Virtua Racing. By that time, I already had a PSX, and never looked back.

  • From a programmers perspective, the 32x was really never used to its full potential. If the 32x was solely dedicated to video processing while the game code was run on the genesis processor, you could have done some amazing things with it.

  • Another good game could be DOOM or Knuckles' CHAOTIX

  • Doom absolutely sucked compared to the Jaguar version, the music and visuals were far superior, then again, Doom was the only good game apart from Aliens vs Predator on that piece of shit console. By then I was kicking ass on Tekken on the original PlayStation.

    Good times!

  • i would buy 1!

  • why wtf would u?

  • cus i would

    doom and sonic!

and anyother games that i may like
