I find a good bit of the heavier stuff to have a checklist quality to it; still plenty of impressive playing, of course, but leaning gnarly and cacophonous tone-wise, and somewhat repetitive playing-wise compared to this and plenty of 70s live stuff I've heard in person and recorded (either approved or bootleg).
good heavens, is this fantastic or what ???!!! his playing is so free and unfettered, yet still so musical here; not just trotting out the bag of tricks as on some of the recent Ronnie Scott stuff. better, more varied guitar tone too. smokin' groove by the band.
I don't hear it, and I hear a lot. I'd agree what he's doing w/ the whammy bar is ridiculously gorgeous and evolved, and the new dvd shows that off spectacularly -- in quieter moments anyhow.
I can't recall anyone who has continually grown and reinvented himself far past the year that for other guitarists we call "prime". This man has been in his prime for 40 years. At Jeff Beck's funeral, he going to sit up in his casket and play something we never heard before. And may that be many, many years from now!
haha that will definetly happen. of course, he will only be dead in like 40+ years. why? becuase he's a guitar god. they live longer. for example: les paul. and so will jimmy page.
this is from a TV prog called 5 Faces of Guitar, I remmbr watching it. Barney Kessel, Paco Pena were 2 of the others. Backing band is a band called Upp who used to back Jeff a lot. The kbd player, Andi Clark, co-wrote Head for Backstage Pass on Wired.
I reckon that his playing on Beck-Ola using a pick and a Les Paul was nearer to his present style of playing that this - perhaps he was just getting more accustomed to fusion or something
JB and a Les Paul...a pick as well...the boy did grow up to become the monster we all try to emulate...just got weirder....lunatic whammy bar and an incredible sense of time and tune...and he still looks ok after all these years! Top player, top bloke...keep me mystified Jeff M8
Best guitar player, ever.Period!!! P.S. Dig J.B.,s '52 Les Paul!!! {First year issue}Jeff Beck is as good as he wants to be,anytime he wants to be!Truly amazing guitar player!!!
I never thought "She's a Woman" was poppy in the first place, and the Beatles deserve the pre-eminent position and universal respect that they have held for forty years. It was the poster I was replying to who was calling them poppy, not me.
jeff had the talk box before anyone else and when he heard frampton had got one jeff never used it again. You see, jeff is a leader in music not a follower!!
one of the funnier highlights of my music career was shutting down a heckler/drunk moron by cussing him out through my old '70s Heil Sound talkbox during a gig........the crowd roared and ostracized the guy right outta the place! Ahhhhh, they have sooo many uses!
as he plays with his thumb to create wierd a nd whicky sounding noice his last to albums have this style you had it coming and jeff both i highley recommend.
It's rare you see Jeff playing a Les Paul. He can make whatever guitar he's playing just sing.

wonderful funky groove back there. Who's on bass?
This is when he was still playing the electric guitar, just better than the rest of us.
Now its like he's playing something invisible that no one else can aspire to.
Love him.

I would've thought Beck would have thought of the Beatles as too poppy for him, like Eric Clapton in their early days.
sayward12 3 years ago
The man who made Hi Ho Silver Lining a hit would certainly not consider the Beatles too poppy.
ketmaniac 3 years ago
He hated Hi Ho SL.
He was forced by his manager to record that song.
Anyway nothing is too popy if the result is this,I mean he did versions, not just repeating.
