@syddiallo The difference; back in the day they would curse in some music for a point and a purpose. Today they are cursing with no point. no purpose, no beat, no rhythm....just because they can.
No matter who is playing lead guitar on this, it was created by Eddie Hazel. I saw it at a concert in 1968 and Eddie was playing and the whole band was singing it. Truth be told, who knows who was playing lead on P-Funk releases? George Clinton didn't keep track, and he used outtakes from studio sessions. Is it any wonder so many got screwed out of their royalties? Plus, he took old songs from back in the beginning and remade them with new titles. Eddie created most of the music back then.
Damn, this jam even got the wallflowers on the floor. It just wasn't loud enough-but it always started a dead party-great live performance from Clinton & the gang-classic!
@ coldaziceee. I'm not comparing it to today's rubbish for one second. I can just imagine how shocked some people would have been in the 70's (at least in my country)...agreed. 60% of today's black music is lacklustre, unoriginal and sets out to offend and shock for the sake of it. Nothing more. With no message or meaning.
@FegalTube HA still not anything like todays mainstream music. Just listen to some of Nicki Minajs music. Thats what todays youth pumps in their brain daily.
This is Paul Warren on guitar! He was THE rock session guitarist at motown. Played on Papa was a rolling stone also and only 18 yrs old at the time! Plays with Rod Stewart now. Detroit breeds bad ass rock and roll guitar maniacs!!!
A pure hive of samples, and a definitive track, as always with Funkadelic. The first seconds were sampled in two major rap hits of the 90's, The electric guitar riff in NWA "a 100 miles and runnin" (though it's not the more significant sample in that track) and the drum intro in "Funky Cold Medina" by tone loc, in his intro too! Terrific track by Funkadelic worth his name!
We used to call this the National Anthem. Most Black folks back then weren't down with hard rock style guitars, but they made an exception for this track.
What a tight fucking song! I wish real music was still played everywhere! The music of today doesn't even reflect the times. Cuz I know back in the 40's and 50's it was jump blues and rock and roll and then 60's was great soul music from stax and motown and 70's was the emergence of funk and then 80's Michael Jackson and Quiet Storm. Then 90's was some great alternative rap artists and neo soul. Then 00's is ??????????????????????????. For a while Outkast was doing well at merging funk and rap.
isnt there a rap version of this song? it says shit goddamn get off your ass and jam? i keep trying to find it but i cant, i heard it when i was in 5th grade so i dont remember the singers of it
Wow! It's been decades since I've heard this. My older, "funkfied" brother used to play this when I was a kid, about 9 or 10, and we were so impressed by the badwords in it. They can say that and we can't. Why!?
@kissmylipsification Are you able to describe the Abby? I seem to recall the name of this dance but can't remember what the steps or moves were. I think I'm getting old, lol, if I recall the dance move I can't recall it's name and vice versa. Ah, the good old carefree days.
this is paul warren on lead here eddie was in prison when the let's take it to the stage sessions were made. eddie played on good to your earhole, and better by the pound only.
I still don't like the cussing part of this BUT I think the tune itself is one of the funkiest, hard hittin' tunes I've ever heard. That guitar is SICK!!!!!!
It could have just been an instrumental and had the same effect.
I remember my best friend and i were toasted on qualludes and listening to the album that lenny had just bought and we put that bitch on the stereo and my mother was upstairs and she heard the whatever funking the cow and freaked out and ran downstairs. I WONT HAVE THAT KIND OF WORDS IN THIS HOUSE ;). Well lenny put the next song on and THIS CAME ON! :D. Anyway back in those days FUNK was not allowed to be said in my house anyway :D.
I'm a old head and a bass player. Plenty of brothers are still playin bass but where are our lead guitar players of now and the future? When I was gowing up we listened to all kinds of music. Black people y'all dont; know but y'all slackin. everybody that plays insrtuments ain't go to play int the church. We're losing our legacy on monster rock style lead guitar players. Shit got damn!!!!!
@phillybass101 Right on brotha Bass. They forgot that Jimi, Eddie Hazel, and Ernie Isley set loose some serious shit back in the days. And that isn't even counting some of the early influences that blues brought us.
@phillybass101 thats true, the only soul I have felt in the guitar is when the black masters were playing.. yeah I felt it from plenty of white folks too, but these guys were as they say so themselves inspired by black guitar legends.. theres not much soul left in contemporary music anyway, though thats just my opinion, but yep I dont see any upcoming black lead guitarists, mostly just rappers.. wheres the funk/blues/rocknroll? did u guys disown it?
@phillybass101 im a youngg spanish guitaristt butt i gota say tha i havent seen a black guitar player of my age ever. not to be racist or anything but white people just cant funk or blues as well as black people can. thats just a fact
Brings back good memories. The dj played this and everybody at the club/party went crazy. A good dj knew just when the momentum was right to ease into this song.
The first time I heard this I saw them in concert at Radio City Music Hall in NY, older people had shocked expressions on their faces. My friends and I then started busting dance moves in the aisles. It was quite a scene. "Oh dear I am appalled at such language" Then I wondered what made them by the tickets. Youth is wasted on the young people; Get off your ass!
In yesteryear, as a club DJ, I opened every set each night P-Funk Shit, Goddamn get Off Your Ass and Jam. It was a signature song, that my whole crowd new. Even on slow , cold, January nights, it never failed to fill the floor. I would slide from P-Funk into a Paul Jbara classic, and it would smooth sailing from then to closing.
yes its Eddie Hazel...listen to the way he cuts the riff up at 1:27 . He's using fairly simple patterns in a different way. the timing and the swells on the pedal too....this is his style..this is what makes him a bit special.
Glad I decided to investigate the other half of P-Funk today. Been a Parliament fan for years, but never heard the right Funkadelic stuff. This and Super Stoopid have set me straight!
@bronenalladin From what I've read, it's neither. Supposedly it one of the many people who used to hang around with the band back in that era. Not sure of his name though.
@yohanntimban - yes, but it fit the music. it wasn't done for shock value, and it was not copied by other artists they way things are copied now. artists back then were more individualized in their artistic expressions. I was at a pool part in LA when I first heard this! Great party days.
@moviechick007 Woow thats right , but it sounds like u come str8 from the 70s 80s era if u used to listenin to it. me peeps would call me "sell out'' because i listenin yo ol music while im 22 lol
@koolfraser parliment had some different artists. they also played funk with a wah wah pedal where as the parliment never really used one. Their songs are much better. they had much better albums. and they were much more funkier
@skizmsucks23 They started as the same members Cliton just kept adding more as time went on. The biggest difference between the two is that Parliament was more R & B based with lots of horns, lots of vocals nice and smooth sounding. Funkadelic was much funk/rock with dirty guitars, heavy bass, and oh so fun lyrics.
@Gwitfu90 I just checked out your comparison of EWF to Parliament Funkadelic, Sorry, but IMO EWF is just a silly bunch of 70's pop guys. No offense is intended.
Thanks Paul-I'm happy for your success and will look for your record-you realize that the attention paid to honest soul guitar in f-delic,will ultimately,if not already, go down as some of the best guitar in modern music hist. -always real-never 'technique-ey'-- Bravo
hella deep and will always be one of my favorites since the day it was released. ...You gotta' give it to 'em, nobody rocked they way these guys did back then.
I'm 57 y/o now and stil feel like funkin'when I hewr this!George clinton could rock a house 35 years ago and still doesThis song is pure funkand it rocks!
First tune I danced to in a Gay Bar. I felt at home. It didn't matter if one was black, white, male, female or whatever. We loved each other in 1975, and I miss those days. We Can "Get it Together". and U know it

I also forgot to mention that Public Enemy used this joint for Bring The Noise(1988) and Brothers Gonna Work It Out(1990).

Thanks Paul-I'm happy for your success and will look for your record-you realize that the attention paid to honest soul guitar in f-delic,will ultimately,if not already, go down as some of the best guitar in modern music hist. -always real-never 'technique-ey'-- Bravo

First tune I danced to in a Gay Bar. I felt at home. It didn't matter if one was black, white, male, female or whatever. We loved each other in 1975, and I miss those days. We Can "Get it Together". and U know it
