Looks like a lot of people standing around waiting and excess steps throughout. This could use some airspeed if you know what I mean. Process Improvement? 5S? No? Damn you military!!!
I woud like to ask how often do they do the transformation, weekly, montly or may be twice a year? I am asking this question, because in my country we don`t make such a radical transformation. Fom soccer stadium or athletics hall to concert stage yes, but from ice to basketball, never done.
Major flaw in arco arena's design. this is truly a basketball arena. Arco was never built for any type of ice event such as hokey. Cuz the stage is in the wrong place it should be long ways not on the side talking about the stage. Though this is still even with all the drama about being outdated ONE OF THE BEST places in the world to see a basketball game. No Arena in sports gets you closer to the court then arco Great vid. RIP Arco!!!!
I remember one game where they had to constantly stop play because the players were slipping all over the place from the condensation on the wood floors laid over the ice.
@germxv Power Balance Pavilion, formerly Arco Arena, is shaped like an octagon, unlike modern arenas which are oval shaped. I don't know if that has anything to do with the way the ice is laid out, but in oval arenas the ice and basketball court has to be laid out in the same direction because of the shape of the building.
This probably sounds ignorant/stupid but how are they actually taking the ice off? Do they thin it out layer by layer and then just scrape it off? Im from the uk and just getting into NHL so this is new to me, thanks.
@tlapse Thanks man, thats cool, and around the 1.35 mark, it looks like they are stacking white pieces and taking them out? Is that the flooring that the ice forms onto?
@jedimasterjack The kings also have a pretty old arena with more modern arenas the ice is always there they just put an insulated pad over the ice and the put the basketball flooring on top
@jedimasterjack NHL arenas have freezing equipment permanently embedded in the concrete floor. This video shows a temporary freezing surface suitable for figure skating, but not really hockey.
Shared hockey/basketball arenas usually put a layer of insulated padding over the ice, then install the basketball floor on top of that. They only melt the ice once or twice a year, unless there's a major problem.
@Jamesznw I would love it! Because not only would I do this, I would also be able to see two great games for FREE and everyday! Imagine, you get paid and you get FREE GAMES!
can i watch the kings game 1st then I will hide in the bathroom then watch the lakers game? then hide again in the bathroom then watch clippers game?
@Galastin Unlike other arenas were two parallel sides are elongated like a rectangle, all four sides of the stands of Arco are actually pretty symmetrical. The arena is basically a square so the courts can face in different directions.
very cool! we have a great time lapse set at the Second Base Youth Shelter in Toronto - turning a rundown parking lot into a basketball court in only one day.
@storeflack Air Canada Centre doesn't take out the ice for changeover because an ice user(Mapleleafs) are permanent tenants. Arco arena has no ice tenants just basketball.
This is reallty impressive because it is not as ovbious that the arena can support a hockey rink as in other arenas such as the TD garden in Boston and the American Airlines Center in Dallas.
@11ph22il Im sorry I was just having a terrible day sorry i was being such a jerk and i understand that in brazil they dont have big arenas like in america please forgive me
Great video, its good to see how they change the floor from hockey to basketball, now i know how its done even though in most cases the arena crew leave the ice down and put something over the ice then the basketball floor.
They only use ice at Arco for Disney on Ice/Figure Sating events, which is only about 6-7 days of the year. They make the ice from scratch before each of those events and scrape it up when it's over.
yes. their scraping off the ice. the white is from the planks underneath which I'm guessing to be waterproofed wood with linolium (or some other flooring) on top of it.
A lot of arena's hire homeless people, and temps to clean up and do work like this. At least that is how they did things in Houston and New Orleans. I'm sure more cities are the same way.
Overpaid? its gifted athletes doing what they do best and if the demand for them is so much why should they not get paid so much?? Its supply vs demand 3rd grade kid...Go back to school. If these 20-24 players attract over 15,000 people to watch them why not?
@adi1096 What are they making? What are they good for society? NOTHING. They are scoring useless points that don't matter, don't save lives, don't create food or shelter and don't create new medicines. USELES.
