nasir92220 where'd you get this tornado with a singers voice. I had to remember I was sitting down and I was supposed to be breathing!! How breathtaking. Thank you, more, more, more!!!
@purtymonster "neva has every member in one crew been so diverse"...Seeing what they did with this song just makes me love both of them that much more.
@bigiam100 I stand corrected, funny how this urban legend exists and taken for gospel but this was way before the internet so I will use that as my get out of jail free pass. Merry Clayton's shinning moment is on the "Tommy" Symphonic Soundtrack featuring Various Artists (1972 Ode/A & M Records). Merry did "The Acid Queen" against an entire symphony orchestra----whoever has this mega-rare soundtrack, please post Merry's "The Acid Queen" immediately!
Merry Clayton, twin sister of singer- Bill Withers, was filmed in a TV studio with live audience for a Cheech and Chong show when this album shown here was released. With Cheech trying to give Merry a nice intro, Chong, seated next to Merry, cut him off and said, "Why not just let the broad sing?" which broke up the audence. With that, Merry took to the mic and gave a complete concert, the only one I think had ever been televised, the highlights were "Southern Man" and 'A Song For You." Post!!!
During the commercials, the local TV announcer said "Merry Clayton sings true blues," which was so far from the truth; Merry expertly combines jazz, blues, soul, rock and folk into an exquisite delivery that makes all of her performances live or recorded a true musical experience. Does anyone have the footage of that Merry Clayton TV special, with Cheech & Chong? This special was probably produced by A & M Records as both Merry and Cheech & Chong were signed to Ode Records, distributed by A & M.
She also was the female vocal on the Stones original version of "Gimme Shelter"...AND, she was one of the original Raylettes (Ray Charles female backup singers)
What a awesome voice. I wish the younger black girls today would give up the rap and listen and learn from beautiful singers like Merry. What a waste today. Listen to this because you ain't gonna hear any of this music anymore. This is it. Soul music is a thing of the past. Hang on to it.
You are SO right. I wish they'd quit rap. And stop that absolutely overdone death-by-a-thousand-notes singing, where they can't sing just a plain "C", but have to trill it up and down the scale for 200 notes, as if much, much more is better. Because it's not.
Listen to Merry Clayton and Aretha and you'll hear that the grand dames of soul were powerful but always in control, and they would never pull the note overkill trill that got started with Patti Labelle.
@jum1801 This led to a far more restrained yet powerful style of soul singing whereby glissandi and other techniques were used sparingly and purely in context. Todays soul singing recalls its history, but is not an integral part of the artists lives as in the past; I am not religious, but the part it played in the development of popular music cannot be underestimated.
@valerysgirl I am huge rap fan and i agree too many times singers just make repitive carbon copies of rap songs with just vocals and dont experiment with soul and the genres that birth the music they sing
