Turks and Arabs have many similarities. religion is large part of that similarity. Most turks are conditioned to think, behave and live like the arabs because of the common religion. well unfortunately, it's a mistake made by a variety of reporters who are (self?)claimed mid east experts. You can't even put Turkey firmly in the mid eastern spot because Turks are very different than Arabs and just like the Urals "separate" Europe from Asia, Taurus mounts separate Turkey from the middle east and the actual, historical Istanbul as a city, is entirely on continental Europe. The recent growth of the city made it a cross-continental city, that's all.

The mosque featured in Istanbul is not an example of mosque architecture. It is the former church Hagia Sophia commissioned by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian. It was converted to a mosque following the Islamic conquest.
