In all this game, the devil is losing and at the end will be accused of everything because GOD don’t want any rivals. Conclusion: live at the full in the freedom of GOD (praying in a right form, following the INSTRUCTIONS in the Bible - keeping the 10 commandments - including keeping the Saturday as the 7th day etc.) instead of in the incapacity and limited power of devil because he is just a temporary puppet. Jesus Christ is the savior and hope.
banks are never about helping people. it's about establishing debt based economic system. that's why the west decided to reward Dr. Yunus with noble prize.
@Sarezh998 No he is not. the corrupt govt of BD is trying to smear him with false allegations. They are afraid that they might be overthrown and people would eventually bring honest people like Yunus in power
@RajakarSLAYER Didn't use or listen to BD, I saw a documentary about him, where they interviewed the familes who ¨got help¨, my ass if they got any help.
A blessing to have this man in the world to help empower women and their communities. This is a key component to end world hunger. Coming soon is a documentary on one of micro-finance's pioneers and success stories:
Mary Aloe Producer to executive produce Obama Documentary about his mother (a micro finance pioneer) with prestigious director Charles Burnett.
Sorry to say but this is true, why he has gain novel? Because he makes to Chilla Kaitta Lobon Lagaia Dimu such as road salesman, The Grameen Bank has done good job by money makes from poor people as interest 30% per month.
Dr Yunus did not invent the micro loan as an idea . the innovation came from the fact that this genius man believes in moral values. pulling people of of poverty is a big moral value . poverty can be banned from earh by spreading and adapting this idea to other societies
You are right. He did not wake up one day and say I am going to start micro lending. Instead he studied the lending in Bangladesh and realized that people just need small amounts of money to get on their feet. As a result he developed microlending. All he wanted to do was to help the poor and that is what he did. He gave them the opportunity to use their knowledge and skills and maximize their potential just because he gave them a few bucks.
You may be interested to know about a new documentary film world premiering at the Sundance Film Festival this month about Grameen Bank America and Dr. Muhammad Yunus work with microfinancing. To Catch a Dollar: Muhammad Yunus Banks on America is a film directed by Gayle Ferraro which follows women in Queens who are improving their lives through microfinance loans. The film does a good job of explaining the concept of microfinancing and the organizing principles of Grameen Bank.
Unpayable debt is not a good thing but I think it is pretty hard to argue that mortgages or car loans are completly bad.
Education, health facilities, jobs, etc. are crucial in raising people's standard of living but so is a banking system that offers loans, deposits, etc.
We have given interest free loans in teh past and it just hasn't worked. Grameen can bypass corrupt, local gov'ts and give help the people. Also, it promotes entrepreneurship and independence.
Yunus didn't just talk about improving the lives of the poor. If you have an idea to make it happen check out The Unreasonable Institute - lets make your dream a reality/
for me, poverty have started centurys ago before this modern live we are living now. poverty can only be minimize little by little before things can stand upright.
for me, poverty have started century ago before this modern live we are living now. poverty can only be minimize little by little before things can stand upright.
and the SOB refuses to die! whats your problem hamidmushtaq? enough already...get the hell out of this thread and show your kinda 'respect' to your family! otherwise find a thread about Barack Obama getting NObel prize and start ranting there. Im sure youll find a much pleasing audience there :P
The problem with poverty alleviation programmes is that they presume behind every poor farmer is an entrepreneur waiting for a $250 loan to start that agri-business of his dreams. The fact is that, too often, it's convenient to think that throwing money at a problem in this case, poor people will solve it. It won't. When it comes to development and poverty alleviation, there's simply no substitute for things like schools and nearby medical facilities or interest free loans.
Hamid's point of view has to be considered seriously. It is definitely thought provoking. Everything that is said in public interviews may not be accurate.
There is a big scheme going on to bring the 'uncovered' populations under loan bracket.
America's sinking middle class is a standing testimony to what money lending business can do.
Samdawatson's outburst are unqualified and shows the person's lack of consideration to other's views.
I'm fed up of the word "Poverty alleviation". It is well known that loans, do not bring out people from poverty, it only pushes them further into debts. No country has ever benefited from taking loans from IMF. All this Microfinance thing is bullshit, that does nothing to help poor. If you want to help poor, give them education, health facilities, jobs and interest free loans if they really want loans. I'm saying it once again that interest based loans is no help to poor people, its exploitation
All these pessimistic professors remind me of the saying:
"Ones that can - DO, those who can't- TEACH"
What did they contribute to the poor? except siphoning millions of dollars from the universities worldwide, that being taxpayer's money, and producing there fuck of a critique of whther microfinance is good or not. Get a FUCKING life, and try investing time in creating an alternative. Take some TIME AND THINK!!!! - or else shut your pie hole, that includes some "hamidmushtaq" too.
There are pessimists everywhere in the world. Loser attitude. Everything is BAD. EXCEPT whatever he thinks is right.
Hey due dilligent "hamidmushtaq" - what are alternatives to help this poor people without having to write their kidneys as assets when they need to take a loan to survive? Sure some of them are buying food with microfinance money, cuz its not your or anybody elses fukin problem how they organize their dough. They can payback. They are given a "chance". They decide their fate.
Many people who embrace microfinance are still shocked by the double-digit interest rates that MFIs charge their poor clients. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, chief minister of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, complained that some MFIs were "worse than moneylenders" because they charged interest rates over 20 percent.
Why dont you ask them to start lending money with single digit interest rates or whatever! Why dont YOU do it then? Following a classic example of a nutcase, you are constantly ranting against Microcredit, which is hailed by " bulk of the recognized and respected economists in the world".
What are you trying to prove here? That you a nutcase? - already proven. That you dont like microcredit? - Already clear.
So get a life and get the hell out of this thread hamidmushtaq.
I'm against capitalism sir! Capitalism in any form is bad. This man Muhammad Younus is a strong advocate of capitalism and this world is ruled by capitalists. He got so much recognition because he brought capitalism to the poor, who were previously untouched by it. And no, giving loans to poor is just a silver bullet, it does not alleviates poverty. If you look at countries level, an IMF's important man himself stated that no country has ever benefited from loans given by IMF!
I respect your humble education, and Im sure the world would be benefited if you find an alternative? You hate capitalism, whats that thing you DONT hate? Capitalism rules the super powers in this world, and you are ruthlessly concentrating on how to STOP poor people having whatever hopes in the lights of microfinance they have. Try to invest some time of your own to find an alternative. THEN SPEAK!
if capitalism is so effective, why must 60 percent of the worlds population squeak by on six percent of its income? Why is it that Chinas remarkable economic growth is ruining its environment? Why is poverty on the rise in the United States, even as its overall wealth skyrockets?
I do have an alternative, that is to abolish fiat money, bring back currency based on gold and silver and abolish moneylending by private sector, only government should lend at 0%.
Good. Now you are thinking straight. Now that you have determined What. Can you sanely try to think about "HOW"? I mean its easy to think that end of global warming is as simple as switching to electric cars. But how?.......there you go baby!
Surprisingly, Suvarna Gandham agrees. "What can you expect if you give a 70-dollar loan for one year to a person? What magic can you expect from him? At the most, he can survive, and there can be small changes in his quality of life."
"The biggest problem with microcredit is that people who get these small loans usually start or expand a very simple business," Karnani concludes. "We need to create more jobs, and microcredit does not help to do that yet."
Economists who have looked at how microfinance impacts national economic growth have not yet been impressed by microcredit. Aneel Karnani, a professor at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, argues that microcredit does not increase the number of people with jobs or the gross domestic product of a country.
GhandifyUs, the paying back percentage is a bit misleading. Because many borrowers payback by taking loan from another microcredit company. And microcredit business is booming in countries like Bangladesh, so there are many companies willing to lend you money. As a result of, many borrowers are left in a permanent debt-trap!
Perhaps more than Muhammad Younus, the founders of JAK bank, which is an interest free bank of Sweden, should had been awarded with Noble Prize. And we Muslims, should learn from these people!
Hamid, Some thought provoking and hopeful ideas you are putting out there. How about one step further.... have you seen Zeitgeist Addendum ? see Google Movies. peace : )
Man made monetary systems have failed. Zimbabwe, current recession, great depressions, World War etc... All proves that this capitalist system has failed miserably. We should at once, abolish interest, fractional reserve banking and fiat money, and come back to the system recommended by God.
If lending money to the poor is such a great idea, y don't government start lending to those poor at 0% interest rates. y is it that difficult. Y leave the moneylending business to swindlers!
True, and he is not charging interest, but charging very high (20%). So that means, if I payback a loan say after 5 years, it will be 2.5 times the original amount!!! and I payback after 10 years, it will be 6.2 times the original amount. Now somebody tell me, y this usurer got a nobel prize????
When people lived indigenously, there were no poor, these were resource based "economies". There is too many of us now for that. However we could still move back to a resource based economy and use technology to solve many of problems. Money creates more problems than it solves - social stratas, greed and corruption. Take away the cause, and you solve these. It is hard to imagine the alternatives but this monetary system is archaic and out of date.
Its very surprising a usurer moneylender got a noble prize! The person who should be the most despicable person got the noble prize. Next time, who is getting the noble prize, a pimp? a drug dealer?
It is very surprising how such illiterate people are allowed to comment about respected people. Hes talking about usurer, hes talking about interests, he is talking about billions. Is he talking about trust? Is he talking about risks? Is he talking about policies of usual banks? Does he know how his father got him the computer he is using to post his pieces of shit?
NO NO! He is jealous cuz Yunus got the Nobel Prize. He has nothing good in life to do. He is a jargon buster, who is utter BS!
you people know he is drinking blood of poor people.study about his company, their interest rate and profit of last year. so you get answer of those question.actully he is a making proverty in our country.study about poor people in bd then you know how they retrun his money with interest most of them beging from nrb or they sell their last hope space of their home.
What a stupid man. He says, "you can't leave people poor". I ask him, in what situation do you leave poor when you give usurious loans. You only push them further into poverty. I'm not the one who gets fooled by few success stories of people who have taken loan from this usurer, how many poor people actually have entrepreneurship skills! It must be less than 20%! Interest is forbidden by God, and there is very good reason for it! According to God, All usurer will burn in hell!!!!
I don't know if you were responding to the video but, there are non usurious ways of lending money which still allows the lenders to make profits. this is not forbidden by most religions (including islam).
also, why do you call this man stupid? he is a nobel prize winner, and you're not.
Actually, it is haram to make profit from lending. The principle is, if you take x amounts of currency, lend it, and get a higher return you are devaluing the currency. That is the principle that is harram. But Yunus is trying to find a way to empower poor farmers in a global capitalist system, and this is a very good way. Is it haram? Thats controversial, but I support it
yes, the concept of riba' or to take interest from the money you lend IS haram. But microbanking done by Yunus is works like the Islamic banking system. A system that profits from dividens. He's merely investing on the small buisnesses to reap minor profits. But the scale in which he does it is very large, which allows for a greater income on his side. And yea, I support it as well...
Economist, Gina neff says, In Bangladesh, 30 years after Yunuss invention, poverty statistics are worse than theyve ever been, so something else is the source of the problem and micro-credit is not helping. Economics journalist Gina Neff has also written that after eight years of borrowing, 55 percent of Grameen households still arent able to meet their basic nutritional needs - so many women are using their loans to buy food rather than invest in business. So stop glorifying him!
Whats the problem with a poor family using a micro-loan to put food on the table? With a repayment rate over 95% shows that low income families are still using the money in a resourceful manor, and still paying back the loans. It could be possible that some families are using it for expendable income. Which in my opinion could still be a good thing.
To Generalzetta, If you can prove what you said I'm ready to accept. But, It's funny 'cause you even don't know the proper meaning of Infidel. You are brain washed by Western Media whose love to lie most of the time. Educate yourself first and be ready for a healthy debate.
go fuck yourself you ignorant bastard. have you even read the quran? where the fuck does it say he raped girls and killed people and started wars? please oh please give me the verse. HE NEVER touched any woman that was not his wife or daughter and if you think that he raped anyone you are such a dumb piece of lying shit. he didn't start wars you retard, he did go to wars though to fight for Islam, get your facts straight? please you ignorant cum face?
i agree with him that we should help poor people but wouldn't it just be easier to crush them with religious delusions? promise them a better after-life so they won't cause trouble in this one?
You can't condemn the entire Muslim faith because of a minority of fundamentalists. The Christian Bible teaches about the stoning of women and cutting off of hands...it's fundamentalism that gives the faith a violent image.
Everyone knows that the real solution to poverty is the empowerment of women. To give them power over their own reproductive system, to give them a voice in national and indeed international politics, to give them financial support in form of micro loans, to free them from a status of breeding machines to be better capable of caring for the education and welfare of their existing children. Towards these ends we should work and fight.
He is a fraud. His team vandalize the dirt poor people if they unable to pay up the bills on time. Even they took their roof and household items.!! What a bunch of greedy bastards.
i fucking hate all these retards that think islam has anything to do with this. you people are racist bastards that have no self respect and anything you see on tv you automatically make a huge stereotype of them. those so called muslims that use so much violence are NOT EVEN CONSIDERED MUSLIMS, THEY ARE ONLY EXTREMISTS THAT TAKE A VERSE FROM THE QURAN AND GIVE IT DIFFERENT MEANING. go read a book dipshits.
oh really?? many people will abuse the word faith and u will see that through out any religion's history...and atheism is no exception take Hitler for example he was a proud atheist who believed that Jews should not live because of their beliefs.
it doesn't matter if they were Christians Muslims Jews atheists they followed a leader which they had too or they would be killed or considered to be traitors. Look you can't blame wars on religion because there were wars way before any of that. its in human nature.
Islam doesn't promote violence, it says you must respect all religion. Only time you can use violence is for defense. Most of the terrorists preach Islam but follows nothing of it.
Get an education first, respect others, and then write all that crap on youtube. If you hate others you can do what Stewie said, "Suck a dick and die".
what a good for nothing pple he is congrats u all the ways whahahahahahhahahahahahahaha india indians....i know where your standard and quality are....good in free action and clowns and toys of others only.
Why is it that when someone says "terrorist", people always attatch "muslim" to it? Unfortunately, there are people in the world using the muslim faith to achieve their anarchistic agendas. The fact is, terrorism, much like drug running, uses poor, uneducated people to do the dirty work and the dying. At the moment, the easiest people to recruit are the multitude of poor people in these countries for hom the 'hook' that these guys use is similar to their faith.
hey buddy..you can't eat money..you can't eat a nobel prize..nor can you eat words..so your nobel prizes are nothing more than token mementos given to idiots who actually believe 'words' will feed the hungry and clothe the poor..what a completely brainwashed conformist society we live in..put your stupid writing implements away and quit trying to feed the hungry with ink and paper and get off your sad asses and spend some or your millions on putting your money where your mouths are!
Haha, so you think this guy won a Noble Prize just for talking about what he thinks of poverty?
xD
Mohammad Yunus is a businessman. He gives loans to entrepreneurs too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. Yunus is also the founder of Grameen Bank.
Yunus also serves on the board of directors of the United Nations Foundation.
It's only a 1 min excerpt. It's hard to get into mind blowing stuff in that time limit.
There is a strong relationship between poverty and terrorism. It's just easier to convince people to resort to extreme matters when they are poor. Take a look at Hitler and Germany.
Capitalism and unjustice play a factor in poverty but it's not as simple as that.
The guy is trying his best to save lives. Why you got to be a negative nancy?
Terrorism got nothing to do with poverty. cs the terrorist here are the richest on earth..US ploted 9/11 a terrorist attack against their own people. to gain control of Irak and Afghanistan who have nothind to do with the 9/11. their terrorising right now Iran and other muslim countries. and the fighters who are targeting occupation in Irak, Afghanistan and Palistine are not terrorist..they are fight for their freedom from real terrorists. so shut up pussy mouth and go suck your brother cock
Totally agree with you asrimostalg, capitalism, interest based system, fractional reserve banking and fiat money is the actual cause of poverty, and he thinks that by giving loans to poor at 20% is a very noble cause!!! These people show to media only success stories, which might be 1 out 100 cases. How many poor people actually have entrepreneurship skills? hardly any. They are able to payback because either they take a further loan from some other microfinance company or from their wages.
OK, akiraguy, here is my advice. First of all, we should get rid of this fiat money, and instead use a currency based on gold and silver. This is already happening in some muslim countries, including your country. Secondly moneylending should be noncommercialized, that is either it should be lended by government or a charity organization at 0% interest. By getting rid of fiat money, fractional reserve banking and interest, we will greatly reduce poverty!
example. if we replace ALL fiat American money with golds it will be an ounce for each 13000 dollars. second point; moneylenders are businessmen; they want money. its far better to not borrow what you cant pay back rather than regularized it. my opinion; get the greenback back to gold standard. and how do you know things from my country? thats top secret.
The problems you are hinting at are not brought on by lending alone.. It was unregulated lending. Lending is vital aspect in business and a large part of many peoples lives. The majority of people who buy a home are getting a loan.. Many students are using loans to go to school.
You said lending is a vital aspect of many peoples live. I would say that due to widespreat lending and borrowing, many people's lives are filled with debts and worries. We should realize that debt is not a good thing!
Its absolutely vital to abolish fiat money. Because fiat money is unstable. Look at Zimbabwean dollar. At its peak 1.59 Zim Dollar was equal to 1 US Dollar. But look at it now! By a gold currency, your money will have a very stable value. Secondly moneylending business, based on interest should be banned altogether. All moneylending should be done by government from country's budget. Interest and time value of money creates inflation and poverty!
I am so proud I did not WIN any prizes cos it's too cheapos....but i am proud of my good will actions....funny noone gives me the prizes of my goodwill doing around the world....LOL....i smile and i laugh all the ways.
did they fix u 2 win d price of talking and do nothing at all? lol...expected standard lah.....dun talk do action for me i am very poor leh.....becos talk everyone can talk 2 and talk is free and cheap....but not action. hahhahaha agree? LOL.
you cant read a book if your hungry ... may be they dont give them food so they keep them hungry so they will never be able to read and learn .. cause if they read and learn they will rebel against them .. this is nasty politics
I read his book "Banker to the Poor" n it did change my pre-conceived views on poverty... The world needs more M. Yunus... The world is blessed with Sir Yunus...
i met mr yunus in london and all some of the people he helped ,they were from very poor backkgrounds and he helped them all, they were very grateful, god bless muhammed yunus.
if they are so poor they can't even afford to feed themselves, what good is a book? or the ability to read one? of course education is important. but its the next step. the people in poverty needs food and a decent place to live in first!
I'm so sorry RajakarNizamiSyedi, I don't know what I could have been thinking... Is all those ignorant poor people need is a credit card... You should be a politician...
Microcredit hasn't finished poverty but has put poor people further in trouble by creating debt traps. Afterall God has not forbidden interest for no reason. As a mulsim, you should know that even taking 1% interest is not allowed. I'm not saying that Islamic banks are right, they just hide interest under a sale agreement. People like you only see one side of the picture, but ignore the other side.
Why is Islam, Israel and terrorism hijacking a video about a Bangladeshi economist and author who won a Nobel prize. Go back to talking about the man and his achievements and lecture not things that do not have anything to do with this video.
Those who r giving bad comments about Prof Younus,Either they know nothing about him or They r little educated dump head who would know nothing about Micro Credit Finance...He changed the world...I salute...
I'm currently 3/4 the way through his book, "Banker to the Poor". I highly recommend the book and I think that Yunus will go down in history as one of the greats once his strategy is implemented in every culture across our poverty stricken globe.
atleast he did something mothafucker....not lyk u assholes warmin dere chair n givin stupid comments...so lets consider ur plan giv ppl money fr free y dont u do it ...lets c how long u survive
A good system will work well even in the harshest of conditions. For a poverty reduction scheme to work well globally, it should accept that most people are motivated not merely by altruism, but also by profit. And there is nothing wrong in making a profit, so long as it is not excessive. Perhaps Yunus' scheme has worked because it accepts this reality.
I really, really don't think you have any idea what you are talking about. You may as well have ascribed a cure for polio to John Wesley, for making a statement such as that.
John Calvin put forth the theology of "Predestination", and had nothing to do with banking.
Muhammad Yunus is by far the living person I admire the most on earth today. He just managed to observe around him and find a solution to a problem millions of people have looked at before and never manage to do much. And on top of that, he wasn't afraid to go against the generally accepted ideas and had the strength to persevere to have them accepted progressively.
That is one way we can feed the poor. Learning, understanding, teaching them how to manipulate themselves, and their environment to produce a peaceful and fullfilling outcome of life.
Understanding needs to be offered according to the kindness of man's heart. This might sound strange.. but you don't want an evil person learning about physics if he's gonna re-create an atom bomb. Therefore science should be somewhat gaurded. But basics is what everyone should know.
poor is poor because, rich has been greedy and after getting power of governings has made every effort to suck the blood out of poor, most of poor countries antrpnrs are invests else where rather then they own countries. states are another manin guilty party in people being poor.
over 86,000 view - iff each and every person gave just 1.00 each that would be 86,000 pounds to help the poor. especially in Countries like India where some poor people have no choice but to eat rats - because they have no other choice....
khalifa987, that's some impressive racism crescendoing right into a well-rounded ignorant and poorly researched statement. Without this guy, the micro-investment movement would never have gotten started. And his methods have worked, at no profit to himself. So research before you speak.
this man doesn't make a profit... if he did, then he probably wouldn't have been elected for a nobel peace prize. maybe the interest is merely imposed as incentive to payback the debts, which so far, 99% of loanees have done. So the system seems to be working, and it isn't like he's sending out loansharks to get the money from those who can't pay. relax, hatemongers. what he's done has helped hundreds of thousands survive in a world that's forgotten the poor.
joeybobthethird, you have made a very good point, that "His bank had an income of 5 billion in 2005". To those who think he his serving the poor should realize that it is actually they other way round. The poor are working their butts off to payback usurious loans to this parasitic usurer! and yet he gets a noble prize, God!!!
Absolutely disgraceful! Little knowledge is dangerous..and hamidmushtaq just proved it. Ive done research over microcredit schemes run by his company, they have done things - is amazing. Most importantly, the people don't give a shit about giving 20% interest. If they have 5 apples, they have no problem giving one apple back to the guy who ensured it, compared to a situation where no apple is involved.
Next time have some respect, or restrain your fingers on the fly.
People like you only see one side of the picture. Now tell me, how many poor people have got entrepreneurship skills. I'm sick of those moneylenders who keep on saying that interest is a very good thing, and when you take a loan you are always to start a successful business. Are we living in a fairy tale world? Many of these people payback the loan by taking another loan, and they are forever caught in a debt trap! Face reality, God has not forbidden interest for no reason! many die from it!
The knowledge of God is much greater than you or me or any other person. When he says to not take interest, he is saying it for a reason. And he has suggested very sever punishment for moneylenders. Jesus Christ who was know for his compassion, got so enraged when he saw moneylenders in the chruch, that he forcefully expelled them. It was only in 16th century, a protestant saint allowed interest, saying that only high interests are forbidden. Face it, interest is the root of all financial probs!
And remember the guy who took one apple per person, accumulated 100s of them in the end by doing nothing. That is the definition of interest, earn money by doing absolutely nothing, that is lending money! God teaches us to give money as charity, not take it from poor! Face it, This parasitic usurer is only interested in himself, in making money (his bank has made millions) and all from the very poor! There is nothing noble in it, its exploitation, just like IMF exploiting poor nations!
if charging interest wasnt done, no one would have the incentive to lend out large amounts of money that may not recieve any return. banks store money from rich people and pay them a small interest for it, then lend that to companies who will turn profit and repay it with a large interest that allows the original investors small interest plus a cut for the bank and it's employees.
The problem with people like you and moneylenders is that they think that everybody will be able to produce that extra apple! While that is not the case. In India, many farmers took loans, to buy lands, but then the crop failed and they lost all their lands, So after borrowing 5 apples, they were not able to produce even 1 apple, and you are saying as if they can create 6 apple from thin air! Only bankers can create money out of thin air a.k.a fractional reserve banking, I hate moneylenders!
Live in theories and your books, and your pathetic logic. Without the help of these microcredit schemes, they wouldn't get "any" loans. Do you understand WHY the microcredit scheme actually started? you are talking about entrepreneurship. I dont know where you come from, but creating a full fledged farm out of a couple of livestock is "prehistoric" knowledge of human beings. The quality of your education is so appaling, i hate to reply to your mindless rants..
99 % is a very misleading figure, because many poor people who can't payback actually take loan from another microcredit company to payback. As a muslim i believe that Interest cannot be beneficial to society as it is very much disliked by God.

Hello!

The problem with poverty alleviation programmes is that they presume behind every poor farmer is an entrepreneur waiting for a $250 loan to start that agri-business of his dreams. The fact is that, too often, it's convenient to think that throwing money at a problem in this case, poor people will solve it. It won't. When it comes to development and poverty alleviation, there's simply no substitute for things like schools and nearby medical facilities or interest free loans.
hamidmushtaq 2 years ago 2
Hamid's point of view has to be considered seriously. It is definitely thought provoking. Everything that is said in public interviews may not be accurate.
There is a big scheme going on to bring the 'uncovered' populations under loan bracket.
America's sinking middle class is a standing testimony to what money lending business can do.
Samdawatson's outburst are unqualified and shows the person's lack of consideration to other's views.
TABSUM 2 years ago
I'm fed up of the word "Poverty alleviation". It is well known that loans, do not bring out people from poverty, it only pushes them further into debts. No country has ever benefited from taking loans from IMF. All this Microfinance thing is bullshit, that does nothing to help poor. If you want to help poor, give them education, health facilities, jobs and interest free loans if they really want loans. I'm saying it once again that interest based loans is no help to poor people, its exploitation
hamidmushtaq 2 years ago
All these pessimistic professors remind me of the saying:
"Ones that can - DO, those who can't- TEACH"
What did they contribute to the poor? except siphoning millions of dollars from the universities worldwide, that being taxpayer's money, and producing there fuck of a critique of whther microfinance is good or not. Get a FUCKING life, and try investing time in creating an alternative. Take some TIME AND THINK!!!! - or else shut your pie hole, that includes some "hamidmushtaq" too.
samdawatson 2 years ago
There are pessimists everywhere in the world. Loser attitude. Everything is BAD. EXCEPT whatever he thinks is right.
Hey due dilligent "hamidmushtaq" - what are alternatives to help this poor people without having to write their kidneys as assets when they need to take a loan to survive? Sure some of them are buying food with microfinance money, cuz its not your or anybody elses fukin problem how they organize their dough. They can payback. They are given a "chance". They decide their fate.
samdawatson 2 years ago
Many people who embrace microfinance are still shocked by the double-digit interest rates that MFIs charge their poor clients. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, chief minister of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, complained that some MFIs were "worse than moneylenders" because they charged interest rates over 20 percent.
hamidmushtaq 2 years ago

If you look at countries level, an IMF's important man himself stated that no country has ever benefited from loans given by IMF!
hamidmushtaq 2 years ago
I respect your humble education, and Im sure the world would be benefited if you find an alternative? You hate capitalism, whats that thing you DONT hate? Capitalism rules the super powers in this world, and you are ruthlessly concentrating on how to STOP poor people having whatever hopes in the lights of microfinance they have. Try to invest some time of your own to find an alternative. THEN SPEAK!
samdawatson 2 years ago
if capitalism is so effective, why must 60 percent of the worlds population squeak by on six percent of its income? Why is it that Chinas remarkable economic growth is ruining its environment? Why is poverty on the rise in the United States, even as its overall wealth skyrockets?
I do have an alternative, that is to abolish fiat money, bring back currency based on gold and silver and abolish moneylending by private sector, only government should lend at 0%.
hamidmushtaq 2 years ago

"We need to create more jobs, and microcredit does not help to do that yet."
hamidmushtaq 2 years ago
No jobs, no development?
Economists who have looked at how microfinance impacts national economic growth have not yet been impressed by microcredit. Aneel Karnani, a professor at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, argues that microcredit does not increase the number of people with jobs or the gross domestic product of a country.
hamidmushtaq 2 years ago
microcredit. And apparently the poor have a very high rate of paying back their loans. Very low default rates.
GhandifyUs 2 years ago
GhandifyUs, the paying back percentage is a bit misleading. Because many borrowers payback by taking loan from another microcredit company. And microcredit business is booming in countries like Bangladesh, so there are many companies willing to lend you money. As a result of, many borrowers are left in a permanent debt-trap!

According to God, All usurer will burn in hell!!!!
hamidmushtaq 2 years ago
I don't know if you were responding to the video but, there are non usurious ways of lending money which still allows the lenders to make profits. this is not forbidden by most religions (including islam).
also, why do you call this man stupid? he is a nobel prize winner, and you're not.
redballyou 2 years ago
Actually, it is haram to make profit from lending. The principle is, if you take x amounts of currency, lend it, and get a higher return you are devaluing the currency. That is the principle that is harram. But Yunus is trying to find a way to empower poor farmers in a global capitalist system, and this is a very good way. Is it haram? Thats controversial, but I support it
AbtinX 2 years ago
yes, the concept of riba' or to take interest from the money you lend IS haram. But microbanking done by Yunus is works like the Islamic banking system. A system that profits from dividens. He's merely investing on the small buisnesses to reap minor profits. But the scale in which he does it is very large, which allows for a greater income on his side. And yea, I support it as well...
muhddzar 2 years ago
True, it's a great project.
AbtinX 2 years ago
Economist, Gina neff says, In Bangladesh, 30 years after Yunuss invention, poverty statistics are worse than theyve ever been, so something else is the source of the problem and micro-credit is not helping. Economics journalist Gina Neff has also written that after eight years of borrowing, 55 percent of Grameen households still arent able to meet their basic nutritional needs - so many women are using their loans to buy food rather than invest in business. So stop glorifying him!
hamidmushtaq 2 years ago
Whats the problem with a poor family using a micro-loan to put food on the table? With a repayment rate over 95% shows that low income families are still using the money in a resourceful manor, and still paying back the loans. It could be possible that some families are using it for expendable income. Which in my opinion could still be a good thing.

There is a strong relationship between poverty and terrorism. It's just easier to convince people to resort to extreme matters when they are poor. Take a look at Hitler and Germany.
Capitalism and unjustice play a factor in poverty but it's not as simple as that.

akiraguy 2 years ago
OK, akiraguy, here is my advice. First of all, we should get rid of this fiat money, and instead use a currency based on gold and silver. This is already happening in some muslim countries, including your country. Secondly moneylending should be noncommercialized, that is either it should be lended by government or a charity organization at 0% interest. By getting rid of fiat money, fractional reserve banking and interest, we will greatly reduce poverty!
hamidmushtaq 2 years ago
example. if we replace ALL fiat American money with golds it will be an ounce for each 13000 dollars. second point; moneylenders are businessmen; they want money. its far better to not borrow what you cant pay back rather than regularized it. my opinion; get the greenback back to gold standard. and how do you know things from my country? thats top secret.
akiraguy 2 years ago
That is my point. Moneylending should not be a business. It should be banned! And that will quite end up all money problems that we have today.
hamidmushtaq 2 years ago
The problems you are hinting at are not brought on by lending alone.. It was unregulated lending. Lending is vital aspect in business and a large part of many peoples lives. The majority of people who buy a home are getting a loan.. Many students are using loans to go to school.
sunnus 2 years ago
You said lending is a vital aspect of many peoples live. I would say that due to widespreat lending and borrowing, many people's lives are filled with debts and worries. We should realize that debt is not a good thing!
hamidmushtaq 2 years ago
Its absolutely vital to abolish fiat money. Because fiat money is unstable. Look at Zimbabwean dollar. At its peak 1.59 Zim Dollar was equal to 1 US Dollar. But look at it now! By a gold currency, your money will have a very stable value. Secondly moneylending business, based on interest should be banned altogether. All moneylending should be done by government from country's budget. Interest and time value of money creates inflation and poverty!

John Calvin put forth the theology of "Predestination", and had nothing to do with banking.

Fascinating! I've always felt that education of the poor was the best solution to poverty.

That's absolutely beautiful!

Did i asked you to tell me to research...I think you can use that advice for yourself aswell.

this man doesn't make a profit... if he did, then he probably wouldn't have been elected for a nobel peace prize. maybe the interest is merely imposed as incentive to payback the debts, which so far, 99% of loanees have done. So the system seems to be working, and it isn't like he's sending out loansharks to get the money from those who can't pay. relax, hatemongers. what he's done has helped hundreds of thousands survive in a world that's forgotten the poor.

His bank had an income of 5 billion in 2005.

so did he buy a ferrari wid dat u idiot ...all dat money vl b further invested thru hi org for welfare purpose

joeybobthethird, you have made a very good point, that "His bank had an income of 5 billion in 2005".

Face reality, God has not forbidden interest for no reason! many die from it!
hamidmushtaq 2 years ago
The knowledge of God is much greater than you or me or any other person. When he says to not take interest, he is saying it for a reason. And he has suggested very sever punishment for moneylenders. Jesus Christ who was know for his compassion, got so enraged when he saw moneylenders in the chruch, that he forcefully expelled them. It was only in 16th century, a protestant saint allowed interest, saying that only high interests are forbidden. Face it, interest is the root of all financial probs!
hamidmushtaq 2 years ago

The quality of your education is so appaling, i hate to reply to your mindless rants..
samdawatson 2 years ago
99 % is a very misleading figure, because many poor people who can't payback actually take loan from another microcredit company to payback. As a muslim i believe that Interest cannot be beneficial to society as it is very much disliked by God.
