I played this last night with my band at a show, and it is always the song that gets the biggest reaction from a crowd - it is a real blast to play. But even now, after three years of playing it live at all my shows, I still find it extremely tough to play. A wonderful track and a great moment of rock history by Golden Earring.
@1TheDocter1 I have been drumming for close on 40 years, and this is by far and away one of the most difficult drum parts I have ever played. It took me four weeks to learn it well enough for this YouTube cover, and two years of playing it before I was reasonably confident with it live in front of an audience with my band. It is extremely fast and technical.
If you can play this after only four years experience, you sure are doing better than I ever did my friend!
WOW this is very nice job bro.. would be great if I could see it slowed down, how are you doing the intro starting at 0:25? Is it RR LL with an accent on the last L?
@motodrummer I can't recall how I did it on this video, but currently I play it as RR RL RR RL as a shuffle, with the main backbeat (accent) being on the L. I'll have to recheck this vid myself to answer you!
I have to say that the placement of the very first note of the shuffle beat is a BITCH to get right! I am never satisfied I have it right. It seems to come on the 'and' after a long slow '4' count, but then that throws you mentally 'cos you got to get right into that shuffle.
I find this awesome, but the one thing I somewhat disliked was the sound of the snare... I'm not sure if you tried to get it to sound like that or what, but I have these little plastic rings I taped on my drum heads to get a crisper sound out of it and not so much of the ring. I would suggest getting a pair of these for your head (They actually go ON the drums, not around them), it makes it sound a lot better.
@SupermoddedMinecraft Totally agree about drum sound. I now use Moongel, which dampens things. Well, I actually now use my Roland v-drums, which makes my snare sound real sweet!!!!
man, wish me luck, i'm gonna perform this live infront of like 200+ people, and i'm only like...14, but i've just about got it, the only part thats hard is the little drum rolls
If you are only 14 and have got this down, I tip my hat to you!
I'm 46, and after 35+ years of playing, I can safely say that I have not yet got this song sorted and for me the only part that's hard is the bit from 0'00 to 6'43 :-)
Seriously, this is one hell of a drum track to try and play, and it scares the crap out of me. I'm sure your audience will be blown away!
@jouxplan well, its still in the beta process i guess, but i got the rhythm and most of the drum break down, its the massive drum roll's transitioning between the toms and snare that gets me, a bunch of right left right's and drum roll's down the toms ^^ man this is gonna be a tough cookie, if you find it hard, i think it'll be hard for me, or anyone for that matter but hey there's a first time for everything :)
@PSINGstar Im a guitar player and I remember saying the same stuff trying to playing cheap trick songs when i was 14 and im 46 as well, hope to see u on the tele HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
@christianplysgtr hey, where abouts you from? england? america? europe? lolz if your in hastings, do visit the carlisle on october the 8th, when i'll be singing, the drums are a finale with some other drum songs before. (kinda confusing i know)
@Jericho7 Have fun! I found it extremely difficult to learn, and consider it one of the hardest things I know to drum to. Playing it live with my band still scares the crap out of me, even after 2 years :-)
use to be a drummer in the days of golden earring ,, this guy has got it... the bass drum is: all off beats... very difficult cool man hats off to you
For what it is worth, I too find it incredibly difficult to get the bass drum to weave in and around the backbeat, at that speed, in the shuffle groove. I play this with my band, and I have to practice it at least twice a week to make sure I am at least vaguely fluid on it. Even after two years of playing this, I still find it an immense challenge.
I'm sure you'll get there in the end - don't lose heart and above all, have fun!
@niteofoblivion For me, this is absolutely horrific to play - I have been playing it now almost every day for 2 years, just to try keep on top of it: my band plays it live, and it is something that is very scary to play in front of a live audience! I now know it very well, but even so, I treat it with a LOT of respect - this is at the very limit of my ability :-)
I know this is the Golden Earring version, and believe me, I TOTALLY undestand the difficulty this song entails. But I'm currently in the works of learing a combination Earring/Lion version for me to play with some friends and hopefully a band in the future. It was a great cover by the way. Keeping Quarters on the hat while playing the ride snare and bass all together is incredibley challenging. Great job.
Unreal and yet oh, so true! It reminds me of when I'd ask a Guitar player for some Queen and they'd look at me like I was from Mars! You nailed it! Plain and simple. I've been waiting for years to hear a Drummer pull this off. Thanks and best wishes!-Roland
For what it is worth, I struggled like hell to 'pull this off' as you put it, and I have not managed to play it anything like as fluidly and beautifully as Cesar did back in '73 :-)
Hey great job on this cover! To me, Cesar is one of the greatest drummers ever, yet he's so underrated.. guess that's because most people outside the Netherlands only know this song, Twilight zone and When the lady smiles. I'd love to see you do a cover of Bombay btw, I'm sure you could do a great job on it.
@pwh1992 That's very kind of you. I agree about Cesar - he is incredibly fluid and has huge power and groove and feel, and it is way harder to copy him than you first realise. Learning this nearly killed me.
wow. Thats absolutely fantastic Great job of ear lifting..although camera kils snare quality =/..Some of the best faces ive ever seen man, thats real passion and Insane drumming - Dont stop! Great job with the solo you nailed it
@MrQuickScopes1 Ha! Yes, I seem to be quite popular on the face pulling front! It's the only way I know to play - I don't like watching drummers who specialise in looking ultra cool and not pulling any faces, it just seems emotionless to me, which is a real shame.
dude, i know nothing about drumming, but i have always loved this beat to this song so this video is specifically what i searched for, and let me tell ya the good ole truth...you do it justice...you are really good and i can tell from a bystander's point of view that it IS really difficult...much props to ya, gangsta
What a great performance! I love this song, especially for the drumming!
When I was a child, I really wanted to learn how to play drums, but I wasn't allowed. Later on it became a dream and as it is with dreams, they are nice to be kept. I guess I was afraid to find out that I suck at it. Hearing this song again made me finally pull myself together and three weeks ago, I started learning it. Well, it's never too late and to be able to play this song would be my ultimate goal.
@13pence That's a great goal to have! There is so much technique and fluidity and swing and rock and speed and power and groove and 'shuffleness' going on in this song, that it is without doubt one of the greatest drum tracks ever concieved by anyone, and if you can play this, you are doing ok I reckon!
For my part, I found it incredibly hard when doing this video. I have improved since then, playing it live at gigs with my band, but it is still one of the hardest things I know to drum to.
Thanks for your reply. Tomorrow I'm gonna meet a friend of a friend - he's a good drummer and he'll instruct me on proper posture and how to hold the sticks. Now watch out "Radar Love", I'm closing in!!!
The original is from the Golden Earring... not the Doors. I should know, i'm from Holland and singer Barry Hay lived two streets down from me in The Hague.
I'd love to do this song with my band but after watching you and seeing what exactly goes into it, I think it'd take a while for my drummer to learn...
It is indeed great fun to play live, but for most drummers, myself certainly included, it is bloody hard!! This one always goes down well at my band's gigs :-)
@7mastermark That is high praise, thank you! Yes, it took me many, many attempts to learn this, and it is only now, after a year of gigging it with my band (have a look, I have a video of the band in my 'Others' playlist) that I have sort of got it down. It still scares the crap out of me everytime I play it in front of an audience though :-)
Yay! My Dad used to do this song with his band! One night, during the drum solo, he put his his hand through one of the skins, the snare I think, and sliced his hand... But still he pressed on! :0 Sounds insanely painful to me!
@Imperial7Progtasian Hey, cheers! Your Dad though! Wow! Sounds painful. It does not surprise me that your Dad injured himself during the solo - I know how hard I am hitting the drums during that bit and it is a tad physical and fast!!! I will try not to do the same though LOL!
@mullen711 I spent many hours trying to learn what I consider to be one of the most difficult drum parts there is to cover, and all you can comment on, is the sticks?
I see from your channel that you actually enjoyed this video. So why the hate comment for the sticks? This video is about the drumming, not the type or colour of the sticks. Jeeeez.
My band is urging me to cover this song. Naturally, I have my trepidations, but I think it will be easier on me, now that I can watch someone doing it. Thanks for the effort. you do a great job.
@LudwigsDrummer Wow! It blows me away when other drummers tell me they are going to use my vid as a reference! Thank you. Good luck with your band doing this - as I have said to others on here, my band does this live (I have a vid of us doing it on here), and it scares the crap out of me every time! Very easy to go horribly wrong!!!
It's not as easy as it looks to produce accurate footwork while perform semi triplets on the snare drum. That alone is impressive. Overall, I'd say this is the best cover of Radar Love I have ever seen/heard. All you big double bass loud showoffs on here need to try this one on for size and see if it fits you're egos. This is what drumming is all about.
@xxmickeyzeroxx I am truly humbled and blown away by your praise my friend - thank you. As I say in my description, I found this extremely difficult, and almost gave up on it - it is so complex and requires so many different techniques and then to make it actually groove, well, it nearly killed me! My band play this live and it always gets a big reaction (vid of my band playing this is on my Others playlist :-)
I sit down with my djembe and think I do fairly well with that......but I never hammered on it in front of another djembe player though........they may think it to be horrible!! LOL!!
You Guys that can play the full "kit's" like that, are simply amazing!!
@kman192 Cheers! They are a 5pc Pearl Export dating from 1987 - I got them when I was a student many years ago! I got the 8 and 10" toms much more recently, and they are just cheap Stagg things I got off Ebay - but they are great!
I am humbled that you are learning from my videos :-)
'Hey Joe' - very difficult to play it just how Mitch Mtichell played it. Very easy to overplay the drum parts. I seem to have had a good reaction to my drum cover of it on here - it's on my 'Others' playlist - have a look.
You can also see my band playing 'Hey Joe' at a gig recently - also on my 'Others Playlist'.
I am posting a video of my band playing this live in the next week or so, so please keep an eye open for it, or subscribe :-) I think you will all like it, judging from the comments on this video!
I shall try and check out the stuff you mention. Cheers!
For what it is worth, I was anything BUT relaxed when recording this. It is only recently (a year later!) that I feel reasonably relaxed when playing this with my band (see my reply to MrLaydownsally).
trying to learn this for our band , you do it so good i'm trying to learn off you-well done if i'm half as good and pull it off i will be over the moon!
Since doing this vid, I have been playing this live with my band regaularly. I rehearse it at least twice a week at home. I am much more relaxed with it now, and it is a much more accurate version I now do as a result. Having said that, this is the one song in our set (along with Hendrix 'Hey Joe'), that still scares me to death :-)
There is an awful lot of nasty stuff said on YouTube, which is a shame, but not exactly surprising I guess. Especially on these instrument cover vids - some people get very unpleasant, and I have to admit it can be difficult to bite my tongue at times!
Anyway, I do like to make a point of replying to all comments that are constructive, interesting or just plain 'nice'! It only seems polite!
It is a Panasonic camcorder, mid-range, purchased about 3 years ago for around £1000. Can't recall model but if you really want to know, ask, and I will check.
I am using the internal mic that comes with the camcorder. Nothing fancy. No drum mics, no mixing, just the cd belting out music and me bashing on top (with 'quiet' Flix, not loud wooden sticks).
The camcorder does an amazing job, coping with all the sound, eh?!!!!
Cool post ...I dont pkay the druns but by listing to the song i Know is a hard song to play...I love this song and play the air drums to it all the time...lol
That's certainly quite a challenge you set yourself there - I am impressed. I like that despite 'dreading' learning it, you still want to master it the most. Nice one!
When I sat down to learn this last year, I soon began to think I was in way over my head. It is incredibly tough. This song is a regular part of my band's live set, and it is the only song in our set where I am scared!! It is very, very easy to get wrong!
I don't know about what's the hardest song to play or whatnot because I'm a rookie, but it is my humble opinion that this song has the greatest drum track ever laid down by a mortal man. I dare anybody to listen to this song and not air-drum the fuck out of it, even in public. You can't resist.
That being said, this video is absolutely mind blowing and my final goal as a drummer is to some day play this song as well as you did. Wish me luck.
You may be a 'rookie', but you clearly have an ear for a great drum track, because you are absolutely right - the drums in the original of this are just EPIC. Your first paragraph is spot on, my friend: 'even in public' LOL!
Glad you like this video - for what it is worth, every time I play this song in front of an audience with my band, it scares the crap out of me!
Wow, that was The Balls! I have to learn how to listen more attentively to rhythm tracks because I've loved this song for decades but it wasn't 'til I read your side notes that I realized there was a style crossover from rock to jazz. I'm a keyboardist, so there's my excuse for ignorance. Once I saw the vid, it made perfect sense just by watching you- your pattern goes from Keith Moon to Buddy Rich! The Flix really help me appreciate your work a lot - keep using them.
Glad you appreciated this one too! Yes, it is an incredible track to try and cover - some of the most challenging drumming I know. I will be playing this with my band tomorrow night at a gig, and every single time, I shit myself. It is very tough to pull off!!
Nice Job man!!!! I'm also a drummer and I had a hard time learning this peice but you make it seem so simple but nothing could be harder all in all that was......CRAZY!!!!!!!
No. You guys don't get it. The reason for the brushes is so that we can hear the song and the yellow makes it much easier to see exactly what he's doing.
Thanks for sharing your inside dephst on this. Never realized the complexity cause it sounds and comes so natural from cesar. Altough i play only guitar i've always loved this drumming.
You nail it with that comment - Cesar makes it look and sound natural, beautiful, simple and perfect. For him, it does come naturally and easily. For the rest of us, this is one hell of hard piece of drumming to try and copy!
This song certainly gets a reaction from the drumming section of audiences when I play this with my band! It's great fun to play, but hell, I do have to concentrate VERY hard. It's quite a stressful one to play, live! I play the drum part exactly as you see it here - in fact, I think I now play it more accurately. One of these days, though, it will go horribly wrong!!!!!
i love the enthusiasm dude, you're amazing. and sticks are fuckin amazing. we've kinda got a pair of those at my jazz band, but they aren't as flashy as those. hahah they're sweet as fuck. i'd love to play my drums in the dark with those. lol but amazing job on that cover, i love that Golden Earring song, Radar Love or When the Bullet Hits the Bone are my two favorite ones. Great Job man!
Well you are quite right my friend! The drumming in the original track is simply breath-taking, and yes, I think it is one of the most technical drum tracks ever created for a popular song.
Paul Simons 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover would be the only other obvious highly technical drum track on a 'pop' song that I can think of.
Oh, and 'Seven Days' by Sting. Oh, and 'Somewhere Down The Crazy River' by Robbie Roberston. Shit, and 'Slave To The Rhythm' by Grace Jones. Damn......
I am performing this live with my band tomorrow night at an Open Air Festival. This, and the Hendrix 'Hey Joe', are the two tracks in our set that always scare the crap out of me when I am playing in front of a live audience!!!! ('Hey Joe' is another vid of mine if you want to see it - on my channel).
This is the eleventh movie of yours i've watched and i must say i'm really impressed! It makes one kinda aware that drums are, sadly, often the most forgotten instrument, yet just as important, you are a genius
i asked u about the flix sticks a while ago thanks a lot man! i luv my heavy rock ones they relly give my set more tone! Thanks for the recomendation!
To be honest, even though I have been playing for 35 years, when I sat down to try and learn this song for the video, I began to think very quickly that this was way out of my league too! It is really, really tough (but great fun!)
My band played this live for the first time a few weeks ago - and I can tell you that the audience loved it! Shat myself though just before we played it!!!!!!
My critique. First excellent fucking cover! My constructive advice If you want to better this work: Loose the sticks. They are gaudy, distracting and there is no glow in the daylight. Second either your foot strength is a little weak or you aren't noticing the bass drum accents. Finally don't be afraid to crash the crashes! When it calls for a crash hit those mothers! All in all you did an incredible job and thanks for posting your work! I'd personally throw a few stick spins in the mix.
Sticks - long story - have a look at the FAQ Page on my jouxplan website, and you'll understand! In short - I can't play with wood for several reasons, one of which is to do with the need to play quietly - I don't mic the kit on these vids.
I love Flix sticks personally, and I use the fluo ones on these vids to help people see 'em, glow or no glow!
Bass drum - agreed - it's my inability to hit right at such speed!
My interpretation of the crossover was to move my right hand up onto the third tom, with left hand on floor tom. Have a look. That's a cross-over, as far as I am concerned. Thanks for your input.
Tricky it most certainly is! For a while whilst learning it I was sure I could not play it - it is one of the hardest covers I have done on YouTube, no doubt at all.
Beautiful crossover bro.... awesome work here..... very impressive!!! And yes .... the aaaaaaaaaaaghhhhh at the end was well deserved... coz this tune is a bastard to cover on drums......great work!!!
The crossover - yeah, that bit is really tough to get in, what with everything else that is happening - it almost killed me trying to get to grips with the solo section. Drove my neighbours nuts I guess!
I am trying to get my band to include this in our set now, 'cos I reckon if we can pull this off it will go down a storm!
Bastard as it is to play on drums, it is great, great fun to play!
Yep, the solo caused me a lot of problems when I was learning it. It is really hard to get into it, immediately after playing the rest of the song! Trust me, I must have gone over it about 500 times in the space of a four weeks, trying to get it down!
WOW!~this is the best radar love drum cover ever seen!

13pence 1 year ago
@13pence That's a great goal to have! There is so much technique and fluidity and swing and rock and speed and power and groove and 'shuffleness' going on in this song, that it is without doubt one of the greatest drum tracks ever concieved by anyone, and if you can play this, you are doing ok I reckon!
For my part, I found it incredibly hard when doing this video. I have improved since then, playing it live at gigs with my band, but it is still one of the hardest things I know to drum to.
jouxplan 1 year ago
@jouxplan

I believe that is a load of rubbish, Barry Hay and George Kooymans wrote the song, Barry was my neighbour in The Hague for many years.

But I can dream :)

Respect men...god job...it´s very difficult to play, i know cause i tried again and again :-D
7mastermark 1 year ago
@7mastermark That is high praise, thank you! Yes, it took me many, many attempts to learn this, and it is only now, after a year of gigging it with my band (have a look, I have a video of the band in my 'Others' playlist) that I have sort of got it down. It still scares the crap out of me everytime I play it in front of an audience though :-)
jouxplan 1 year ago
Yay! My Dad used to do this song with his band! One night, during the drum solo, he put his his hand through one of the skins, the snare I think, and sliced his hand... But still he pressed on! :0 Sounds insanely painful to me!
Imperial7Progtasian 1 year ago

LudwigsDrummer 1 year ago
@LudwigsDrummer Wow! It blows me away when other drummers tell me they are going to use my vid as a reference! Thank you. Good luck with your band doing this - as I have said to others on here, my band does this live (I have a vid of us doing it on here), and it scares the crap out of me every time! Very easy to go horribly wrong!!!
jouxplan 1 year ago
It's not as easy as it looks to produce accurate footwork while perform semi triplets on the snare drum. That alone is impressive. Overall, I'd say this is the best cover of Radar Love I have ever seen/heard. All you big double bass loud showoffs on here need to try this one on for size and see if it fits you're egos. This is what drumming is all about.
xxmickeyzeroxx 1 year ago 4
@xxmickeyzeroxx I am truly humbled and blown away by your praise my friend - thank you. As I say in my description, I found this extremely difficult, and almost gave up on it - it is so complex and requires so many different techniques and then to make it actually groove, well, it nearly killed me! My band play this live and it always gets a big reaction (vid of my band playing this is on my Others playlist :-)
jouxplan 1 year ago
I sit down with my djembe and think I do fairly well with that......but I never hammered on it in front of another djembe player though........they may think it to be horrible!! LOL!!

For what it is worth, I was anything BUT relaxed when recording this. It is only recently (a year later!) that I feel reasonably relaxed when playing this with my band (see my reply to MrLaydownsally).
More vids to come - many thanks!

Good luck my friend!

Hey, what a lovely thing to say :-)
There is an awful lot of nasty stuff said on YouTube, which is a shame, but not exactly surprising I guess. Especially on these instrument cover vids - some people get very unpleasant, and I have to admit it can be difficult to bite my tongue at times!
Anyway, I do like to make a point of replying to all comments that are constructive, interesting or just plain 'nice'! It only seems polite!
Glad you like this cover - many thanks!

What kind of camera are you or did you use? Are you using a internal or external mic?
christianplysgtr 2 years ago
It is a Panasonic camcorder, mid-range, purchased about 3 years ago for around £1000. Can't recall model but if you really want to know, ask, and I will check.
I am using the internal mic that comes with the camcorder. Nothing fancy. No drum mics, no mixing, just the cd belting out music and me bashing on top (with 'quiet' Flix, not loud wooden sticks).
The camcorder does an amazing job, coping with all the sound, eh?!!!!
jouxplan 2 years ago
The audio and video does look and sound great. Since im in the market of a cam, if its not toomuch trouble can u get the model number? thanks.
christianplysgtr 2 years ago
Hello again :-)
It is a Panasonic NV-GS300.
I suspect it is now superceded, but it should be possible to work out which current model is the equivalent.
Happy New Year to you and good luck with the purcahse. Let me know how you get on!

MrSneakymode 2 years ago
I thank you :-)
That's certainly quite a challenge you set yourself there - I am impressed.
Best of luck to you :-)
jouxplan 2 years ago
I don't know about what's the hardest song to play or whatnot because I'm a rookie, but it is my humble opinion that this song has the greatest drum track ever laid down by a mortal man. I dare anybody to listen to this song and not air-drum the fuck out of it, even in public. You can't resist.
That being said, this video is absolutely mind blowing and my final goal as a drummer is to some day play this song as well as you did. Wish me luck.
militiagung64 2 years ago
You may be a 'rookie', but you clearly have an ear for a great drum track, because you are absolutely right - the drums in the original of this are just EPIC. Your first paragraph is spot on, my friend: 'even in public' LOL!
Glad you like this video - for what it is worth, every time I play this song in front of an audience with my band, it scares the crap out of me!
Many thanks, and best of luck!

"That was the balls!" LOL!!!
Glad you appreciated this one too! Yes, it is an incredible track to try and cover - some of the most challenging drumming I know. I will be playing this with my band tomorrow night at a gig, and every single time, I shit myself. It is very tough to pull off!!

Top stuff mate. I'm don't play drums but i've always said this is one of the most technical tracks out there.
Hennersbass 2 years ago
Well you are quite right my friend! The drumming in the original track is simply breath-taking, and yes, I think it is one of the most technical drum tracks ever created for a popular song.
Paul Simons 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover would be the only other obvious highly technical drum track on a 'pop' song that I can think of.
Oh, and 'Seven Days' by Sting. Oh, and 'Somewhere Down The Crazy River' by Robbie Roberston. Shit, and 'Slave To The Rhythm' by Grace Jones. Damn......
:-)

Absolutely. You just don't get tracks like this nowadays with such pure jazz drum technique, let alone tracks like this at all.

jouxplan 2 years ago
My critique. First excellent fucking cover! My constructive advice If you want to better this work: Loose the sticks. They are gaudy, distracting and there is no glow in the daylight. Second either your foot strength is a little weak or you aren't noticing the bass drum accents. Finally don't be afraid to crash the crashes! When it calls for a crash hit those mothers! All in all you did an incredible job and thanks for posting your work! I'd personally throw a few stick spins in the mix.
Hammerhead786 2 years ago
Thank you!
Crashes - I know, I know!
Stick spins?! As well?!! Fuck me!

The crossover - yeah, that bit is really tough to get in, what with everything else that is happening - it almost killed me trying to get to grips with the solo section. Drove my neighbours nuts I guess!
