  • Sorry, but some times i dont have enough time to post here.

The main problem is doens´t matter what i can show you or the other guy. Some people think this martial things like a religion. It is so stupid the argument that Jogo do Pau came from silambam, but so stupid that propably me trying to take your thoughts out of a religious perspecty is also stupid.

Do you think is reasonable to think that the strongest millatary army of that time, with the bests fire weapons, the bests swords...

  • ... the bests batle ships will discovery half world and get in India and copy silambam??? For what??? Perhaps people the Portugueses defeat military in India copy our methods, afterall we win that war. We conquer their citites, so... perhaps, just perhaps, our martial sistems where better them the autoctones ones.

If you can understand this i cannot explain you better than that.

Technically you re saying that Jogo do Pau has the same tecnich then silambam, but that is absurd...

  • ...Such an afirmation just prove you dont have technicall knowledge of stick fighting, you can even see the diferences betweem the way both styles grab the stick or execute the rotation.

I have some pictures that you can easily find on internet with positions of 2 hand fencing, that are ancient then XIV Century but i dont now how to post them here.

If you do your homework you can find them also.

  • You can't post because it is not there.

  • The book you mentioned contains techniques about how to fight on horse and it deals on knightly combat not jogo do pau or any stick fighting method. The jogo do pau can hardly fight an armoured knight.Europe has its own fighting methos in pole arms, spears, pikes, jousting, irish stick fighting, cudgelling, quarterstaff, sword fencing, nova scrimia, savate, bare knuckle boxing, catch as can, greco roman wrestling etc but jogo do pau is not one of them.

  • I cannot admit that. Now you are just lying. I read the book. i have the book in my personall library.

If you dont read it any time, retract your self or you lose any credits on your argument. What you try to say about western methods of fighting just proves that you dont have a good martial knowldege.

  • @Ronin2006x I am not lying. I have also read that book. You expect me not to read the book but I am interested in both WMA and EMA (in their similarities and difference)that I have read books from Silver, Di Grassi, Fiore dei liberi, fetchbutch,Fechtlehre mit dem Kurzen Schwert, filipo vadi and A ARTE DE BEM CAVALGAR TODA A SELA aslo. Never there is a mention of stick(I mean 6 foot stick not pole arm) combat in the said book.I personally know silambam as well. That's why I commented.

  • On the book you read. Perhaps the vesion translated from my good friens Luis Preto and his father, do you saw the images? Or you read a translation without the images?

  • @Ronin2006x Why don't you post at youtube, the images or text showing any one of the techniques of jogo do pau from the said book A ARTE DE BEM CAVALGAR TODA A SELA and prove your point and instead of trying me to prove whether I have actually read it or not.

  • @Ronin2006x

    Roubam-nos tudo! O nosso dinheiro, a nossa história, a nossa singularidade! E a nossa gente a aturar e a aturar e a aturar e a aturar....

Today, the sport is still rather marginal in Portugal, but there is a stable number of practitioners organized in two federations: the Federação Portuguesa de Jogo do Pau and the Federação Nacional do Jogo do Pau Português. This art is also practised in the Açores and Madeira.

  • @bostafffighter

    6)

The driving force of this revival was Pedro Ferreira, followed by his student Nuno Corvello Russo, who dedicated his life's ambition to Jogo do Pau, frequently visiting the North of Portugal, getting acquainted with surviving variants there, especially with the school of Cabeceiras de Basto. He studied at the Ateneu Comercial de Lisboa, whose master is now Manuel Monteiro.

  • @bostafffighter

    5)

In the 20th century, the practice of Jogo do Pau suffered a quick decline due to the migrations from rural areas to the cities and the greater ease in access to firearms. The players born between 1910 and 1930 were the last generation to experience the flowering of the sport. The memories of this generation provided a continuity in the 1970s, when the sport was revived.

  • @bostafffighter

    4)

During the 19th century, Jogo do Pau was brought to Lisboa by a northern master, resulting in an amalgamation with the technique of the Gameirosabre, growing into a sportive competition, removed from actual combat. It was practiced in clubs such as the Ginásio Clube Português and the Ateneu Comercial de Lisboa.

Others say that its origins are medieval techniques of combat much similar to what is taught in the medieval book "A arte de bem cavalgar em toda a sela" by Edward I of Portugal (1391–1438). This seems more likely, since the martial art developed not in the urban areas open to foreign influences, but in the most isolated mountain regions of continental Portugal.

  • @bostafffighter

    2)

There are references to this martial art being used by the guerrilla against the troops of Napoleon that were occupying Lisbon during the Napoleonic Wars. Some believe that it was influenced by an Indian dance or Indian martial art, which would have been imported and adapted in the period of the Discoveries.

  • 1)

The popularity of this martial art was partly due to the demeanor of the northern folk, who valued personal and family honor enough to kill for it. It was also due in no small part to the relative ease of obtaining a staff as well as the versatility of such a tool: a staff or stick was almost universally present, used as a support for the long daily walks, to help cross the rivers, by the shepherds to protect the cattle from wild animals, and so on.

  • @Ronin2006x It is only you who said that the techniques of jogo do pau are mentioned in the ancient text of

A ARTE DE BEM CAVALGAR TODA A SELA before the year 1500 ad. So, why not you post them on youtube instead of keep on repeating the childish claim of "it is in my library".The burden of proof or the onus probandi is on you.I have full respect for WesternMartialArts but this jogo do pau is just plagiarism of Silambam.

  • @Ronin2006x oops! sorry man! I was just keenly following the argument between you and the other guy. it was very interesting man.So i though i would just join in, no offence meant.

  • The book is "A ARTE DE BEM CAVALGAR TODA A SELA" From "EL REI D. DUARTE" (1391-1438). In this book you can find what i am trying to explain you.

  • This is exactly a copy of silambam. The portuguese ruled tamil nadu they were the first to rule india. If you doubt it try to find the evidence of jogo do pau beforerthe year 1500 AD which was when vasco da gama set his foot on india. There is hardly an historic evidence regarding this art before 17th century at most."

  • @bostafffighter You are not very smart. Jogo do pau doesn.t have technicall origin in india, but in fencincing with 2 hands in Europe. We have very historicall registes thta can prove it much time before the data you refer.

  • @Ronin2006x I'm not talking about fencing with 2 hands.I can assure you 100% that this is nothing but Silambam Indian stick fighting.watch the countless youtube silambam videos and you yourself can tell.Turning and hitting is simply not the European way of fencing, and see quarterstaff which is a genuine English martial arts.Only thing different here is the frequent use of one hand which silambam people do but not during a demonstration as they are more keen to show the showy flourishingmoves.

  • AI!

  • Lindo!

  • Muito fixe!

  • o meu avô ensinou me isto tinha eu 5 anos! levei uma paulada no meio do coxa nunca mais me esqueci

  • fail

  • @jimthemessiah go trolling somewhere else.

  • ow.. baton is a large term it would seem... i mean the two handed french staff :)

  • lol... half the hits would miss the opponent if not blocked ... horizontal strikes are to short (even if evaded they shold be at least aimed at the opponent and not in front of him)and vertical strikes are mostly aimed in the air to the left or right of the other guy... next time at least try to hit each other :P

otherwise looks a lot like french baton witn no strikes in the legs

  • when they show the examples slowly they strike to the body, when sparing, i guess they are just keeping safe distances(isnt ideal indeed...) ... they do use strikes to the legs some times.

but I doubt you could bloke those strikes with a french baton;)

  • blocking stick with a stick isnt a big problem if the weight ratio isn't too big and baton looks about the same - though blocking the legs is usually the hardest ...

i noticed hits in the legs ... missed them the first time since they're diagonal...

the air hits are there for safety yes, but distance is a major aspect in stick fighting and should not be neglected like that - they would be better off with some protective gear ... i like the martial art itself enough though

  • sry... replyid to my post ... its meant for this one ;)

  • sry... replyid to my post ... its meant for this one ;)

  • I don't see that blocking with a staff is all that easy because of the hands, w/h handguard and at hitting distance that is a major concearn, even if it doesnt hit directly on the hand.I agree that you sould always hit to the body and not in front of him, my jdp master is allways saying that too.

  • I was just saying they are doing that to keep safe so the demo doesnt go wrong,i understand that, but dont think that is right too, if you practice wrong distance all the time you will never get it right when you need it, cheers.

  • yes that's why magellan died.

  • He got hit with a poisoned arrow even before the battle began.

  • One of the characters I'm creating for a video game uses this martial art, thanks for the video ^_^

  • WTF? You´re creating a game?! And one of the characters uses jogo do pau?! Man tell me the name of that game

  • Sorry sorry, a person wrote sent me a message about this. It isn't ready yet lol, when I go to college for game creation and if I am successful I will. The name for the game as of now is Fighter's Pride, I've drawn the character and developed how his movement's and move should look (As well as many other characters) but for now that's all. I will try my best to make this game for you and others though! Glad to hear you like the idea of it.

  • I wish you the best luck

  • Thank you, I really do appreciate it. :)

  • wow a portguese martail art

  • Impressive!

Is this a Pure Portugese system?

  • Yes it is.

  • no it's not, they picked up stick fighitng when they went to india

  • No, they did not. You've been reading the wrong texts. Jogo do Pau only became popular in Lisbon in the XIX century, before that it was practiced in the rural mountain areas of Portugal by farmers and shepherds. Lisbon was the main port/harbour in the age of Discoveries but there was no Jogo do Pau there at the time. The kettukari technique of kalari payattu (India) is very different.

  • Look for

"O jogo do pau não veio da India"

in google. Then use babelfish, on the right, to translate the text into English, if you can't read Portuguese.

  • Canada

  • Oh wow thanks I didn't know that, I'm guessing your Portuguese, thats awsome, I rarely meet another Portuguese people outside my family. My dad is Portuguese and my mom is French mixed with other nationalities. Thanks for the info it helps.

  • where do you live?

  • Koolies, I didn't know Portugal had martial arts, and I'm Portuguese lol.

  • unfornately most of our people don´t give value to their national traditions, and this way the people live in ignorance.

In Portugal there exists 3 genuin martial arts, Jogo do Pau, Galhofa, and a third one i don´t remember the name that is practiced in some villages of Alentejo, similar to greco roman wrestling.

    Hope i could help you
