Not once does Dempsey say that he hates any of the peoples that he lists. He merely highlights the fact that these nations trampled over any and all in their greed. 'Did you never feel shame for what was done in your country's name, or find out whose to blame?' If you've any kind of mind you'll see that this song is a statement to make sure that the truth is heard and that the atrocities are firstly uncovered and secondly never forgotten.
This song is ridiculous. "...you'll see that all humankind are the children of the earth and your hate for them will chew you up and spit you out" ... says Damien, after writing a song that drags up all this hatred and crap. Lyrics are garbage, he's a thick, so overrated.

@Larry2me Well if u'v got a problem with that why don't u start your own revolution? Or are u content to sit and moan and actually have th audacity to accuse our greatest heroes of not gaining our freedom? MC could never have gotten all of Ireland back in one move, the problem was that people settled for what we got instead of staying the course. Civil war impeded our unity and freedom, not MC. And now we're still content to lay down with what we got instead of fighting to regain the North
@Kydos37 Are you for real? Fair enough he was a great leader before the treaty, but what right did he have to make such a compromise on behalf of the people fighting for irish freedom? He completely abandoned the people in the north. The men of 1916 didn't give their lives for Ireland to be divided. And the way the freestaters treated the IRA after the treaty was disgusting! TAKE IT DOWN FROM THE MAST IRISH TRAITORS!
Anyway this is not the place for such an age old argument. Great tune Damien..
Yes but that 800 year controls means the Brits don't need to occupy Ireland as they've instilled their ways of life as much as they can into the country so you therefore lose your roots to a new way of life. English ye are just all greedy in my opinion. Ya hold irish artifacts and ye keep them just for there value and ur just keppin them !!! Ye killed my ancestors and ancestors of many others
A person from Antrim is as Irish as a person from Cork or Galway or Dublin. My ancestrors have been in Ireland (north) for thousands of years not just a few hundred like some blow-ins.
it is now the aftermath of what was a terrible and brutal occupation - the aftermath is the time where people reflect and change, and try to move on. a lot of tru points being made, but to say the north is not irish will get you hung in these 32 counties! the north is now BOTH Irish and Northern Irish - having come out of the troubles the people there today have earned to right, and at this stage, the obligation to govern themselves. but the people in the 26 souther counties still know it as 32.
Eoghan Harris likes to reduce Ireland's fight for freedom and sovereignty as well as every other Nation trying to expell the yoke of British colonial tyrany and oppression as a "Petty Tribal inconsiderations"
The British State and it's current warmongering leaders are considered to be the vile and murderous terrorist state that it is and has been for far too long.
For the working class to wash it's hands of the British military machine is a whitewash.Without the working class there would be no British army, simple.
Any idiot who decides to join the British army deserves it"straight up the arse"like shane McGowen suggests.
Damien Dempsey is a great performer and song writer, shame about Shane at the begginin of the vid showing his rascist views. Im a "Brit" and supposedly i deserve it "straight up the arse"!
rascist views? pull the other one mate.. just telling ya how it is.. you lot gave it straight up the arse to the rest of the world for how ever long..
Damien Dempsey in this song talks about Gremany, France, England, Spain, Belgum etc etc, Shane however picks up on the only word he could probabley hear in his pissed up state. I didnt realise the point of this song was to give it to the Brits, but Shane dont know any better.
A sweeping generalisation, showing no understanding of the working class in Britain. Yes English shat on the Irish, but it wasnt the English working class was it? Unless we working class (as i presume u are Slammaz) realise we have faced and will face the same plight from our rulers, we will remain under the heel of our masters! Erin go Brau
There are no troops on active duty in Northern Ireland. If a majority of people in Northern Ireland ever voted to leave the UK, they would be allowed to do so. In fact, it would go against Article 3.1 of the Constitution of Ireland for the north to join the Republic without the consent of a majoirty of its people.
I do understand that. However, the six counties should never have been "given" to the British in the first place! We had to fight endlessly to get the 26 counties back in the first place is the original point. I do believe the post boxes are red and not green? There is no point in rehashing old politics and I do understand times have changed- but for people of the Republic it really is still a sore point. Time has passed and so many generations have lived and died that
we don't consider people in Nth Ireland British or Irish - rather Northern Irish. Thankfully there is now some form of Irish input in government but essentially - there would be no unionists if Britain hadn't occupied Ireland in the first place. And the last time I looked they were still there and still very fierce in their views - as are the republicans. Thank God there is some form of peace between the peoples and the present generation have grown up not knowing the Troubles
Everyone, except for a few extremists, is happy that there is peace in Ireland now.
I don't think any Brit today would agree with the actions of the British in Ireland over the last 800 years. However, the British Government of today is not occupying Ireland - nor does it want to. Most British people think it is up to the people of Northern Ireland to decide which country they belong.
I hope you can see how distressing it is for Brits to be called occupiers, comparing NI to Tibet or Gaza.
Point taken. Unfortunately the damage was done long ago and is hard to remove from the heart. Damo's song is merely pointing this out. I am totally happy and relieved there is peace in Nth Ireland - and I totally take your point on board. My point is merely that Northern Ireland is NOT a part of Ireland and therefore occupied by people who are not Irish! Nor British either at this stage I guess - but it does still depend, in the heart, if you prefer orange or green :(
LOL! Ah the uncouth unwashed!! Just so happens those old movies made an impression on me - Medea's was so tragic it stuck. For most people it was all about the golden fleece and Medea seemed to get lost in the hype. A pleasure exchanging views with you Medeasbiggestfan :-)
@Medeasbiggestfan mckilla06 Yes but that 800 year controls means the Brits don't need to occupy Ireland as they've instilled their ways of life as much as they can into the country so you therefore lose your roots to a new way of life. I'm a british born man but i am in no way proud or happy at the past of this rotten so called kingdom, they've cleverly, over periods of time, removed people's history and socially engineered our ways of thinking to theirs. GREAT SONG DAMIEN
@mckilla06 You make it sound like the British government of today is the same as it was 800 years, with the same mentality and world view. This is not the case.
The current British government really doesn't care about whether Northern Ireland is part of the UK or not. If a majority of people in Northern Ireland wanted to leave the UK and unite with the Republic of Ireland, it would happen!
@Medeasbiggestfan . man ur an idiot. im born in bred in the north of ireland and let me tell you the brits are still and occupying force in my country.. they patrol my street daily maybe not to the extent of years ago but ther presence here no matter how minute is an offence to the sovereignty of my country. brits out now
@OhThatDannyBoy The troops are not on active duty and they don't police Northern Ireland. They are only there at a garrison level, the same as troops anywhere else in the UK.
Even if all the British soldiers left Northern Ireland today, it would still be part of the UK as the sovereignty of any territory is decided by the people of that territory.
@Medeasbiggestfan It's up to the people of nothern Ireland ? only 6 of the 9 Northern counties have a say. If they all got a vote it would be unanimous , exactly why the brits pick and choose which counties they wanted which is a joke. Funny how the most northern part of the country is under the Tri Colour. I'm sure there's areas in Dublin where they're more polish people for e.g than Irish, maybe poland should draw a line around them areas on the map and have themselves some new land.
Most Brits now think the partition of Ireland was a bad idea, but it happened and we have to do what is best for the Northern Irish people. The majority of people in Ireland support the people of Northern Ireland's right to self-determination. The constitution of Ireland also respects that right.
So if you asked the people of Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan, I think most would say the sovereignty of the other Ulster counties should be determined by the people of the six counties.
But for those of us who do remember and who are taught irish history in school it's a hard lesson learned at the hands of the British. The majority of it's people now would be MAD to vote to join the Republic at the moment anyway - but the North is not Irish - it is Northern Irish and still does not belong to Ireland. Which in my own humble opinion should never have happened in the first place. We are not the only country the British occupied don't forget. I don't offer hate, merely opinion :)
I personally could not give a fuck about what Harris thinks. He,s likely to have changed his mind by now anyway as he allways does. His hero is Bertie Ahern. Enough said. Damien is the MAN.
Looks like people aren't happen Eoghan, despite the considerable efforts and your drift from 'left to far right', taking the King's/Senate shilling in the process while wheeled out to defend FF criminals. A sthe opening scene from De Pardieu's Cyrano De Bergerac, get off the stage because you blacken the struggle and as you can see people an't buying your 'medicine'!
Dhia dhuit Damo agus Shane Diamas na paistai slain agus bannacht For the english this is Shockingly true those two therfore must be Irish ha ha ! estos artistas son buenos representante´s de la historia y cultura de Irlanda, CANCIONES SOBRE´GRAN HAMBRUNA Y ESCLAVITUDE
Ha ah Mc Gowan ya legend. Eoin Haris, when are RTE gonna stop wheelin out that dick to comment on everthing. Great song. Fuck colonialism and imperialism. LOVE PEACE AND FREEDOM
ha ha Shane-o ya legend at the start there. Reminds me of the massive anti war march a couple a years ago in Dublin,on the stage amongst politicians etc his few words summed up everything and he got the biggest cheer. He just grunted 'Fuck the Brits and Fuck the Yanks'. Simple but to the point. good man damo. p.s why is that tosspot Eoghan Harris always wheeled out to comment on everything in Ireland
it's about all colonisation, "you came from germany, from france, from england and from spain" he also sings "we shook hands native americans, the indian in asia, aboriginal australia" it's about more than fucking ireland you gobshite
its a song about the evils of imperialism i find british people still dont accept that the british empire was an evil institution and that for many people living under it was as bad as living under the nazis ask any one from any colony from the carribean to the pacific africa or asia the french also dont accept that there empire was evil

I love damo but did we have to spoil it with that prick mcgowan at the start......tell hin to stay sober for once..no one cares anymore about him hes a has been
I take your point about his talking of colonisation in a global sense but in terms of metre his lyrics are still pure shite with childishly predictable rhyme patterns.
This song should be the Irish national anthem. He's more Irish than any of us. What a song 10/10 damo, fuck the begrudgers. There all probably listening to that McDonalds music(Shit)!
It's ironic that Eoghan Harris talks about the working class. He would shit on them if he got the chance - his right wing values are absurd and his allegiance to Fianna Fail is very contrary to the fact that he's a journalist.
MrKristoff - damn right you shouldn't have to apologise for being English, after all you didn't pull the trigger or crack the whip over the 800 years but check out Harris's politics and you'll be amused. He writes in the Irish Independent.
Well, jack, you felt stongly enough to write a comment? You don't like him. I would say this to you. Damien Dempsey is comparatively starting off in his career and I agree that some of his lyrics can be cringeful at times but on the other hand some can be very good. I think it is refreshing that there is a song writer out there who appears to be honest.I for one support him and I'm sure with time his lyrics will improve.
Shame, Inhumane. Very clever. I hate damien dempseys lyrics. they defy all conventions of poetry and songwriting. Im actually amazed he didnt rhyme earth with birth there at the end just to be original like.. This song is like the shite 14 year olds come out with after they watch micheal collins. Isnt he signed to an english label anyway?
Your credential's to make such bold claims are. Have you award winning lyrics, or poetry or may I say lit published? At least he uses punctuation in his writing. Jesus Ireland is still full of begrudgers
Yeah, actually Im a journalism graduate and ive been published many times. i dont feel its necessary to punctuate when im leaving a comment on youtube.
i looked him up because a friend of mine likes him and said that colony was a good song. so i checked it out for myself only to find it was just more of the same old 1916 dribble that comes out of most uneducated plastic patriot's mouths.
You obviously have no respect for what your ancestors done for us. we'd be using brittish sterling if it wasn't for our men back in 1916. Dribble my hole.
In all fairness mate we'd probably be speaking german if it wasnt for the british. Im catholic irish, so is my family but move on! Its this historical romantic idea of republicans with guns thats dribble. "700 years of persecution" blah blah.. Move on, polotics before bombs.
Your missing the point jacko, damo is not just talking about 1916 (i think that he only put those first few verses in to make it a bit more relative to paddys like me and yourself)but he's speaking about colonisation in a global sense and from a historical perspective from which he writes a lot of songs. He sings of all those 'conquistadors' from western Europe and of their forays into the new world.

Damien Dempsey in this song talks about Gremany, France, England, Spain, Belgum etc etc, Shane however picks up on the only word he could probabley hear in his pissed up state. I didnt realise the point of this song was to give it to the Brits, but Shane dont know any better.
ibitron1 2 years ago
A sweeping generalisation, showing no understanding of the working class in Britain. Yes English shat on the Irish, but it wasnt the English working class was it? Unless we working class (as i presume u are Slammaz) realise we have faced and will face the same plight from our rulers, we will remain under the heel of our masters! Erin go Brau
ibitron1 2 years ago
Shane's not really being racist, he obviously doesn't mean every British person, just those who occupy or support the occupation of Northern Ireland.
CountryQuestion 2 years ago 2
Northern Ireland isn't occupied!
Medeasbiggestfan 2 years ago
You're obviously not Irish - or have no understanding of our history :( It's been occupied since 1916
nikkikava 2 years ago
There are no troops on active duty in Northern Ireland. If a majority of people in Northern Ireland ever voted to leave the UK, they would be allowed to do so. In fact, it would go against Article 3.1 of the Constitution of Ireland for the north to join the Republic without the consent of a majoirty of its people.
In what way is it an occupation?
Medeasbiggestfan 2 years ago
I do understand that. However, the six counties should never have been "given" to the British in the first place! We had to fight endlessly to get the 26 counties back in the first place is the original point. I do believe the post boxes are red and not green? There is no point in rehashing old politics and I do understand times have changed- but for people of the Republic it really is still a sore point. Time has passed and so many generations have lived and died that
nikkikava 2 years ago
we don't consider people in Nth Ireland British or Irish - rather Northern Irish. Thankfully there is now some form of Irish input in government but essentially - there would be no unionists if Britain hadn't occupied Ireland in the first place. And the last time I looked they were still there and still very fierce in their views - as are the republicans. Thank God there is some form of peace between the peoples and the present generation have grown up not knowing the Troubles
nikkikava 2 years ago
Everyone, except for a few extremists, is happy that there is peace in Ireland now.
I don't think any Brit today would agree with the actions of the British in Ireland over the last 800 years. However, the British Government of today is not occupying Ireland - nor does it want to. Most British people think it is up to the people of Northern Ireland to decide which country they belong.
I hope you can see how distressing it is for Brits to be called occupiers, comparing NI to Tibet or Gaza.
Medeasbiggestfan 2 years ago 5
Point taken. Unfortunately the damage was done long ago and is hard to remove from the heart. Damo's song is merely pointing this out. I am totally happy and relieved there is peace in Nth Ireland - and I totally take your point on board. My point is merely that Northern Ireland is NOT a part of Ireland and therefore occupied by people who are not Irish! Nor British either at this stage I guess - but it does still depend, in the heart, if you prefer orange or green :(

BTW - Medea? A fan of Greek mythology or the person herself??

Yes I am a fan of Greek mythology, Jason and the Argonauts in particular.
You're the first person to have noticed, most people say "you've spelled 'media' wrong."
Medeasbiggestfan 2 years ago
LOL! Ah the uncouth unwashed!! Just so happens those old movies made an impression on me - Medea's was so tragic it stuck. For most people it was all about the golden fleece and Medea seemed to get lost in the hype. A pleasure exchanging views with you Medeasbiggestfan :-)
nikkikava 2 years ago
@Medeasbiggestfan mckilla06 Yes but that 800 year controls means the Brits don't need to occupy Ireland as they've instilled their ways of life as much as they can into the country so you therefore lose your roots to a new way of life. I'm a british born man but i am in no way proud or happy at the past of this rotten so called kingdom, they've cleverly, over periods of time, removed people's history and socially engineered our ways of thinking to theirs. GREAT SONG DAMIEN
mckilla06 1 year ago 2
@mckilla06 You make it sound like the British government of today is the same as it was 800 years, with the same mentality and world view. This is not the case.
The current British government really doesn't care about whether Northern Ireland is part of the UK or not. If a majority of people in Northern Ireland wanted to leave the UK and unite with the Republic of Ireland, it would happen!
Medeasbiggestfan 1 year ago
@Medeasbiggestfan . man ur an idiot. im born in bred in the north of ireland and let me tell you the brits are still and occupying force in my country.. they patrol my street daily maybe not to the extent of years ago but ther presence here no matter how minute is an offence to the sovereignty of my country. brits out now
OhThatDannyBoy 1 year ago
@OhThatDannyBoy The troops are not on active duty and they don't police Northern Ireland. They are only there at a garrison level, the same as troops anywhere else in the UK.
Even if all the British soldiers left Northern Ireland today, it would still be part of the UK as the sovereignty of any territory is decided by the people of that territory.
Medeasbiggestfan 1 year ago
@Medeasbiggestfan Hi sorry, that was my uncle who wrote that to you on my account! Hes an idiot lol
OhThatDannyBoy 1 year ago
@Medeasbiggestfan It's up to the people of nothern Ireland ? only 6 of the 9 Northern counties have a say. If they all got a vote it would be unanimous , exactly why the brits pick and choose which counties they wanted which is a joke. Funny how the most northern part of the country is under the Tri Colour. I'm sure there's areas in Dublin where they're more polish people for e.g than Irish, maybe poland should draw a line around them areas on the map and have themselves some new land.
SeanyW1888 5 months ago
@SeanyW1888
Medeasbiggestfan 5 months ago
@SeanyW1888 The counties chose themselves. the Brits didn't choose which ones.
theglobaltiger 2 months ago
But for those of us who do remember and who are taught irish history in school it's a hard lesson learned at the hands of the British. The majority of it's people now would be MAD to vote to join the Republic at the moment anyway - but the North is not Irish - it is Northern Irish and still does not belong to Ireland. Which in my own humble opinion should never have happened in the first place. We are not the only country the British occupied don't forget. I don't offer hate, merely opinion :)

Isnt he signed to an english label anyway?
jackcharltonslad 4 years ago
Your credential's to make such bold claims are. Have you award winning lyrics, or poetry or may I say lit published? At least he uses punctuation in his writing. Jesus Ireland is still full of begrudgers
wellplayedboy 4 years ago
Yeah, actually Im a journalism graduate and ive been published many times. i dont feel its necessary to punctuate when im leaving a comment on youtube.
jackcharltonslad 4 years ago 2
why are you lookin him up if you hate his music, doesnt make sense
jmcgrth 3 years ago
i looked him up because a friend of mine likes him and said that colony was a good song. so i checked it out for myself only to find it was just more of the same old 1916 dribble that comes out of most uneducated plastic patriot's mouths.
jackcharltonslad 3 years ago
You obviously have no respect for what your ancestors done for us. we'd be using brittish sterling if it wasn't for our men back in 1916. Dribble my hole.
guniegugu 3 years ago
In all fairness mate we'd probably be speaking german if it wasnt for the british. Im catholic irish, so is my family but move on! Its this historical romantic idea of republicans with guns thats dribble. "700 years of persecution" blah blah.. Move on, polotics before bombs.
jackcharltonslad 3 years ago
Your missing the point jacko, damo is not just talking about 1916 (i think that he only put those first few verses in to make it a bit more relative to paddys like me and yourself)but he's speaking about colonisation in a global sense and from a historical perspective from which he writes a lot of songs. He sings of all those 'conquistadors' from western Europe and of their forays into the new world.
theItalianhallion 3 years ago
He also when live dedicates this song to the citizens of Iraq and Palestine where colonistion is a real living thing.
Pull your head out a bit now!!

That was my original point. I only made the 1916 point in response to geiegugu's stupidity.
