Barnes is a fucking hypocrite protesting against others riding the coat tails of popular music. As if he ever did anything for up and coming musicians in the Adelaide music scene once Chisel became big.
Oh come on now, JB is in his 50's, like to see you rock like he does now let alone back in the early 80's... Jimmy is and always will be Australia's number 1 rock legend, only the minority see him now and think he isn't any good. He STILL packs the venues out. I remember this night very well, one of TV's best moments :D
I find it hard to believe this is mimed. Ian Moss never played the same solo twice yet his fingers move to the exact notes and Jimi's lip sync skills are impeccable. I say it's live.
@budrock01 Hey Budrock, did you actually send me that message 2 days ago? I never posted the comment above attributed to me- the one saying "I find it hard to believe". That was not me so I don't know how my name became attached. I saw the performance live on TV!! Please respond.
Remember watchin this yrs ago man, fuckin classic. Mossy is a Legend, Barnsey my hero, Don Walker Steve Prestwich & Phil Small poets. CHISEL FOREVER NOW. smash the place boys. CHAMPIONS OF AUSSIE PUB ROCK
Given how easy it would have been for the band to fuel rock media myth making of animosity, I can remember being very impressed and touched by Don Walker crediting the real relationship between the people in the band and the people in the crew in an interview he gave at the time. At the Warners rock awards after party Jimmy sheepishly asked if I was ok. I gave him a glee hug and said it was the best..it was iconic.
Anyone who was in the theatre on the night might recall my cross fade from Chisel feedback into a very dirty live version of Rust Never Sleeps Neil Young...better to burn out than it is to rust...idiot rock media of the day criticised Cold Chisel for collaborating with Countdown. No, we just danced nose to nose in deep, intuitive, strategy.
Now for those who still believe the production crew were unaware of Cold Chisel's intent to protest, consider this: during production run-up, their manager Rod Willis asked for the band to be programmed in the middle of the show. I advised Executive Producer Rob Weekes not to do this because it was predictable they had some kind of protest in mind and that whatever their plan, it would make a great rock finish
History is smudged when the ABC doesnt get its own research right- this video is from the TV Week Rock Awards produced by Countdown. And as a direct result of this stand made by Cold Chisel objecting to TV Week riding on the back of contemporary music without contributing in any real or on going way and Countdown's alliance to this situation, Chisel's objection gave me ground as co-producer to negotiate the beginning of the Countdown Awards in the following year.
Mouldytone you need to watch the interview in regards to this performance... it was in fact mimed as they not permitted to perform live as they wanted too so in retaliation they decided to record a live version where they trashed everything so they could reinact the whole thing on the countdown awards & Jimmy sings... EAT THIS!!! what a way to answer back
That isn't what barnsey says about it on this...Jimmy Barnes - Chisel Doco - Part 2 of 6 (just put that into a youtube search). It certainly looks live to me. You can hear the feedback when Moss hits that strat into his amp, also you can hear it when he plugs it back in (and why plug it back in if only playing along to a backing track and you are smashing up your gear and don't care what will come out of the PA). If it is mimed then it is astounding lip-syncing and musical choreography.
You can seriously mime anything if you rehearse it well enough.. & yes it is excellent lip syncing.. thats was the whole point of it.. TV week refused to allow them to play live thats why they went into the studio & recorded a completely new outro to th song to stick it up the big wigs at TV Week..
In that interview I sent you Barnes said that they wrote the new verse shortly before in a rehersal room; not that they pre-recorded it. I've played in bands for a long time and I am pretty sure that was live. Imagine the practice required to synchronise smashing, dropping then fumbling around to plug back in a guitar to match a long backing track.
Maybe you're right. I don't think so though. I don't want to start a boring and pointless argument as I think we agree what a great band this is.
Dude take a chill pill who fucken cares & to be honest Barnesy would be hard pressed to remember anything from those days as he spent most of them under the influence of drugs & alcohol....on the last stand they mention that it was recorded before the performance took place & I can tell you if anything wouldve been live it wouldve only been vocal everything else would be pre recorded because thats how tv shows worked in australia right up until the early 90's...
@paulocean Actually champ, they wanted chisel to mime but they refused as ant good auusie band would... this for real recorded live, watch any interview with barnesy
@paulocean the interview says that the only times they were on there (countdown), Jimmy sang live, but they were pissed off that they wanted to play live.
however, on this occasion. ian's guitar seems too exact with the video to just be mimed (considering no guitarwork of his is ever exactly the same), and also it stops playing when he actually stops playing... so i do think that this one is live...
yeah definately a great intro and this version sounds very much like swingshift. listening to circus animals for the past few days and it hasnt help which album is better i cant split any of them!
Mouldytone mate you are a deadset Legend, I too have been searching for this, fucking classic moment in TV history that was, I remember watching it at home and the old man reckoned I was fucking stupid becasue I had it cranked up, he had to go for a drive to get away from it..CHISEL the best Aussie Band, fuck the rest of todays crap, fuck rap, fuck em all I say. They're gonna Rock that reunion at the Car Race, Will be there man..
Go Mossy! I love how Jimmy's creaming into the mic and you just see Mossy smashing the guitar at the wall and the part towards the end when it goes through the screen is awsum!!!!!
This is why I love Chisel so much they had balls and stuck up for what they beleived in. How many bands would do this today not many.Chisel never fitted in with these wanks they never helped them while starting off, then they want to cash in on Chisel because they have a colt folowing, while Chisel had news for them. A welcomed releif a band about integrity and looking out for the small fish, thats why they are loved by hard working ausies and kiwis,no band come close to chisel in that respect.
This, along with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion on "Recovery" in the nid-1990's, are two of the greatest musical moments in the history of Australian television broadcasting.
