  • bhoy2nv.. you are so lucky!! I love his voice.. to hear it in person must be amazing!

  • whoa

  • I'm a new fan of Mr. Boutte...I recently finished watching season one of HBO's "Treme" on netflix and couldn't get the theme song, and it's singer, out of my mind..I love Mr. Bouttee's voice..Given that, I think everyone is missing the mark on this song "Why".Annie and John put their individual/unique stamp on this beautiful song. I love both versions..If you can find the clip, you should see Annie do this iive; she brought 1/2 the audiance to tears..But then again, "Why" is that kind of song

  • OMG I love John Boutte. His voice soothes me like nothing else.

  • He fucking sounds like John Boutte!

  • I work with John regulary in New Orleans and let me tell you....there are times he can part the clouds and bring the sunlight down on everybody. Iv'e literally seen this several times

  • I LOVE his version....don't care for the Annie Lennox "classic" one..

LOVE John Boutte. He is cooler than COOL...

  • great song!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • love it.....

  • Yes--Beyond amazing...

  • @grosenberg45 i really like how he has Flexibility in his singing, he can do so much with his voice. plus being a man in his 50's he can sing a song like this with exp.

  • I LOVE his version WAY more than Annie's

  • John Boutte is a heartfelt witness when he sings "Why;" turning it inside out and making it his own. Towards the end of the song, he breaks away from from the bridge, becoming a vocal version of John Coltrane: painting a picture like a photo-journalist and letting it fly in the spirit like a psalmist; an eloquent plaint before man and a cant to GOD, making our case in a celestial court. --Harold Toussaint, poet and author of "Cries and Psalms from the Heart of Babylon."

  • We're total Boutte fans, and this is one of his most expressive

performances. He truly sings from the heart, and wrenches every last drop of emotion out of songs he shares with his audience. He deserves national recognition!

  • I remember hearing about this performance! It was said that John's spirit was so strong and his passion was so deep that the people in the crowd immediately began to cry....some even vomit! Truly a powerful artist!

  • John Boutte is the greatest vocalist on Earth. JB, "how many times" are you going to have to scratch for those opening lyrics...hah ha?. Nobody can move me like he does...a conveyer of the spirit and a heart that can make the clouds part y'all!

  • "WHEN THE POWER OF LOVE OVERCOMES THE LOVE OF POWER, THE WORLD WILL KNOW PEACE..."

    By Jimi Hendrix

  • I saw John Boutte sing this song @ the 1st week of JazzFest in New Orleans Apr 2007. He was backed by the New Orleans Social Club. I had heard the song before, but could not recall who performed it. John is a talented vocalist who sings from the heart with a passion.

If you ever get a chance to see him, don't miss it...

and hope he sings this song...it will stir your soul!

  • And he did it great at Jazz Fest last year!

  • i agree. though i like the original the best, he makes it his own, and the arrangement is great.

  • John said that he sees this song differently through the lens of his experience in Katrina - you can really hear his heart in this song.

  • i really like this. he did a good job.

  • Annie is the best. Great version but only her can give into it for what i love it! But i like this arrangement.

  • Annie is great but this version stands by itself. A very powerful rendision
