This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and performed so perfectly! The studio orchestra and arrangement are superb. I have missed this song and have wanted to share it. So nice to see people remember, and many young people will appreciate it.! Thank you, Lettermen1.
Thank you so much! Have you seen the "answer-disc"?? It was bty the four calquettes and used the same tune on the same label (Capitol). It was called "I'm never coming back" It also has a lot of favorable comments!
OMG I can't believe I forgot this song! I always loved it!! REmember it by Steve Lawrence but the Lettermans version is wonderful too. It was an innocent and carefree time to be young and this does bring back memories living with my now gone nad missed mom and dad. And grammy too.
"I go round moping & I go around blue".
Thanks so much for the post.
Can we go back in time for a little while? We didn't know we had it so good did we?
Thanks, Wendy, I wonder if you've heard the "Answer-disc" to this song by the Four Calquettes?? I posted it a while ago after receiving it from Spain.
Simple melody, simple words, simply great! This song is one of many that reflect the musical, and actual, innocence of the 50's and early 60's. I wish my children, and now, grandchildren, could have had the absolute joy of turning on a radio and hearing a song like this for the first time. How fortunate I feel to have lived through that era.
This is definitely my favorite Lettermen recording. few people recognize. I recall several years ago driving and hearing it for the first time on WKBW-AM in BuffaloNY. But they didn't identify the song and it was a weak signal. So I had to wait weeks until I heard the song again, this time the signal was strong enough to identify the lyrics, but they still didn't identify the title. Finally after a Yahoo search I identified the song, bought the CD, and have played it numerous times since.
To Barrie562. Standard teen-ballard chord progression - G,Em,C,D with repeating chorus as G,C,D. The middle chorus goes G,C,G,Am,D. Then it shifts up a fret to G# etc.
Thanks! I was playing in C but I will repost this song in G should sound better. Its hard to find chords for these old songs - let me know what else you have and I will try to play them.
To Barrie562 - Even though its G Em..., (or F Dm, or A F#m) I'd still refer to this as a "C Am" song. All my favourite songs have that as the dominant chord change. If you really want a "C Am F G" song in the key of C, check out "Evergreen Tree" by Cliff Richard (1960). The chorus is C Am Em Am Em F G. Very simple but beautiful song.
I agree with Phil! We were all Silly somewhere along the path of life. Thanks for sharing your heart. May your experiances help others who come into your life and have their own 'Silly' times!
I heard this song once when it first came out. I never heard it again, but I never forgot it. Now after about 45 years I hear it again. I still like it. Thank you.
Always loved this song, was my favourite on my Lettermens' LP. There's a beautiful song by the Playmates "Wait for Me" that's got the same college close-harmony singing.
Thanks for a great comment! I'll certainly look out for the Playmates whose name rings a faint bell! Another good group who I haven't heard with a similar style is a South African(!) group called the Staccattos.
And I'll look out for the Staccattos. I'm guessing the Playmates wore sweaters with a big 'P'. Thought it was okay to use the title while I wait for the official letter from Buckingham Palace...
Beautiful! I used to have this album and this was always one of my favorite songs of the Lettermen. I have this song on a CD now. BTW, if anyone knows,do Jim Pike and Bob Engemann ever perform anymore?
Thanks! Last I heard Jim was still performing with his Reunion group. Quite a few of their songs are on yt and they have their own website. Bob had also started with them but as far as I know doesn't perform anymore.

Man, this stuff was perfect! Perfect marriage of great singing and orchestration!

You are SOOOO right!...... We had no idea what good times we were living in
All over Youtube are comments from young people who are so disillusioned with today's "music".
You're welcome to come back anytime you feel like travelling back in time with us!

Much thanks to you. Wish there was a way we could get the radio stations to play this stuff. I feel it would be well received if people were honest.
