All of this pack behavior crap is bogus and outdated. Read up on modern behavioral science (most recently, John Bradshaw's Dog Sense, 2011) to see how dogs are NOT wolves and do NOT view humans as fellow dogs.
This is all absolute psycho-babble bullshit. If you're watching this because you think you have a dominant dog, you don't. Dominance is not a personality trait in dogs and has been proven wrong as a behaviour diagnosis. Look for some other explanation, because this is not it. Eating first, walking through doors...it's all wrong and doesn't mean a thing. The dog's doesn't give a damn about those things and won't even notice!
@mydogkanskidrums Apparantly you have never owned a dominant dog then. My dog used to growl at me if I sat on the couc, got on my bed, or tried to eat because she thought she should come first. After I became more firm with her she stopped doing that.
@fubukifangirl That's called resource guarding- it doesn't mean your dog sees you in a pack and wants to climb the status ladder. Resource guarding is a common thing and comes from a protective nature around possessions. Becoming more firm only suppresses behaviours- it can make them stop but one day she could start again and the situation could escalate. Find a qualified APDT behaviourist to help. It has nothing to do with her thinking she can come first- they don't think like that.
No big tips there. Most of the time there's absolutely no gain in training the dog to display submissive behaviour. Instead train him to do the basic commands perfectly, and if you can't restrain the dog whatever his intentions, you should not keep the dog.
