As a white (100% eastern european) girl who has kinky-curly hair, I can tell you that this sort of hair envy in the African American community transcends race. I used to long for thinner, smoother, straighter hair without kinks and without coarseness. Now, my longing for that hair does not have the same implications as it does for African Americans, but in terms of the more modern means of the beauty ideal... i.e. the media, I can understand how young girls feel.
