<3 Jane Eyre!!! I saw this show few days ago for the first time and I immediately fell in love with it...with the characters and the story... I havent read the book yet but I will for sure!! I m actually a huge Jane Austen fan and I havent read any books from the Bronte sister so I'm wondering ,are the characters also so passionate in the book???
I have never seen an actor so committed to his role. I mean, look at him, how passionately he plays in all his parts and how he wants to be the truest Rochester ever. For me he will always be the best Rochester, none of the past or future ones can't beat him!
God I love watching him the voice, the looks the man is oozing out sexiness and us girls can only dream. Hey but who said u can't look and admire.Love u Toby Stephens.
i think its more of like such productions dont really like finding main actors/actresses who dont look "good"...i mean part of the reason some audiences choose one movie or another is because of the people acting out the parts, not the story itself. and plus all that, toby stephens DOES have more of a rugged look about him rather than "pretty" (not that im complaining--he's handsome enough for me ;D)
When he talks, his rough voice mixed with his smoldering eyes, handsome facial expressions, and his obvious deep understanding of the character on both an emotional and intellectual level is just so attractive. Not to mention, he still seems to be in character and we all know how attractive Rochester is. I don't understand how the interviewer manages to just stand there and listen and not fall into a swoon.
I'm 16 and he is too old for me but damn.. he is quite handsome.
Did anyone else notice that the director WANTED a handsome actor? That's completely contradictory to a key part of the book- neither lead character is supposed to be physically attractive, but plain and unremarkable. I love his interpretation (although too cheery for the book), but couldn't the makeup people have uglied him up a bit?
oh my goodness! Even though Mr. Rochester isn't supposed to look 'attractive' you're not going to find me complaining! DAMN that man's hot. He can be my Mr. Rochester any day ;)
And when i read the book i was 15 (unny he was the sane age then..lol) and he embodies exactly what I dreamed he would be...Hair, voice anda personallity...Just didn't imagine he was the son of such a Lovelly woman has Dame Maggie Smith...She's also sweat and brillant...Congrats to him for his brilliant performance...
...But, let's be honest, if they had chosen a gorilla-esque person, not many people would have loved his character so much, let alone watch the series! (people are shallow like that.) And next to the fact that Toby is a handsome man, he is a great actor. ;)
Rochester was really, really Hard...( wait? WHAT!?) OK, sorry lol Yes, I know. How very immature of me ;) Anyway I'm really pleasantly pleased at Toby's intelligence and devotion to the role and story. His performance is brilliant,he's a smart man and what a looker! I'm hoping there are still Rochester's out there who appreciate quite, modest girls like myself.
congratolations, Toby is fantastic... in plays like Hamlet, Macbeth and of course in Jane Eyre.... keep going.... és único, brilhante.. não tenho palavras...
It is the best of the Jane Eyre recording ever made. Both Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson are simply PERRFECT for this story. I have recorded it on VHS (when it was on Public Television) and re-run it over and over again. I have read the book and appreciate how close the recording represents the story. Watching all the scenes with Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson makes me happy and grateful for such wonderful actors visiting my sitting room ... Thank you for posting this interview on the Youtube.
I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one who can't get their head around how amazing/unforgettable/talented/attractive Toby Stephens is :D Not to mention his voice. Oh God.
Moving on... *ahem*...he and Ruth Wilson were excellent in the roles: while she isn't necessarily classically beautiful (although it depends on your opinion), she is beautiful in her own way, and has a very endearing and engaging quality about her that made her perfect for the role :)
Toby is a freaking delight. Intelligent, gorgeous, and down-to-earth. Here's to hoping that he'll continue in his thespian direction and charm us for years....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
For me, Toby lacks a bit of postmodern education.. especially as Jane in this 2006 version is not such an "angel" - she is sexual, she hesitates... and above all: she does not condemn Rochester for his past. Is she an innocent angel? Mr Stephens - no, I dont think so...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
He is intelligent but I'm not sure if enough:) When he describes the two woman: the mad Bertha and innocent Jane - he is caught in the old patriarchal view in the 19th century literature: women being portrayed either as the "angel" or the "monster".
I am just thinking...isn't rochester in the book was supposed to be..well, not so knockout gorgeous? Here, bam, here is Toby, talking about sexual tension with his whole profile practically screaming sexual tension.
Well, Rochester isn't classically handsome (in the way St John is) but he's not repulsive to look at in any way. I think TS did a great job. He looked like Rochester to me, and he sure acted like him, so yay! :D
listening to him talk about sexual tension, looking like that, with those manners and accent.. i realised i drifted to a sort of 'deer in headlights' look.. yep, completely gone.... hahahahaha!
Toby captured Rochester's character PERFECTLY! He's playful and he can be prone to some hissy fits, but he's also very flawed and vulnerable and Toby Stephens played that beautifully.
He is really gorgeous, yes, but also very intelligent. And he has a really interesting theory about his character. A brilliant actor and a brilliant person... I could listen to him all day...
I wish we could see that woman's face as Toby Stephens competes in the "let's say the word sexual as many times in one sentence" world competiion. I'd have swooned after five minutes.
He is incredibly intelligent. You can tell by the way he presents his ideas about Jane and Rochester's relationship. How great to find someone like him, who is not only an exceptional actor but also a very intelligent person.
He is the face, my imagination captured when I was studying Emily Bronte and Jane Eyre. Perhaps a tad self-centred, spoilt and reckless; I suppose he has earned that privilege. But I think he is fiercly intelligent enough to prosper and endure for ever....I wish you every success and happiness, Toby.
I absolutely adore his mother's, Dame Maggie Smith's acting. Such a powerful screen presence. Like mother, like son...
Agreed, and agreed^^ That's exactly what I've been thinking while watching (and listening). He does sound self-conceited at times, with even some Hugh Grantesque intonations, I find (which is not necessarily a defect^^) - but in any case he does it in such a skillful way that he still manages to make himself pleasant. Besides his voice is singularly attractive, the kind of rich voice you seldom grow tired of hearing; he always sounds like he's got a bit of a cold^^
Thank you so very much for posting this delightful interview of Toby, but where did you find it? My JE DVD does not have this. Thand goodness for kind people like you! ^-^
