@DickGranite For those who keep thinking Layne wasn't AIC:
1. Layne Was Alice in Chains.
2. If Layne never joined then this is what you would have.. A band not having it's best asset....Still my favorite band but no-where the potential when they had Layne.
3. Duvall is good and nobody's bashing him...It's just Layne's band and forever it will be.
bla bla fuckin blady fuckin bla.......this shit is good...fuck stupid cunts that think they should kill themselves cause they are afraid of life...YEA, LAYNE THE MAN AFRAID OF LIFE..this is still fuckin good...why should a band die because one asshole thinks he is the band??? keep rockin alice !!!!!!!!!!
i support him [duvall] as an artist and in his role in the band. however it is not a sound or group that is interesting with him as lead singer, especially if there is a strong feeling and memory for the first lead singer...like blind melon, the doors, type o negative,...Boston... if you like the "new Alice" support them. don't let my preference [and those of a multidude of fans] for one singer get in your way.
i think people are just saying Alice in Chains can never be the same without Layne... he is not replaceable, and is personally my favorite singer.. Yea i understand AIC has to move on.. but the point is, without Layne, they are not the same.. and can never be..
@skoakes8 fuck you man. how the fuck is he a disgrace. its hard enough to try to fill laynes shoes and he probobly doesnt need fucks like you tellin him that hes a disgrace. go fuckin die in a hole
i saw them saturday night. im sorry to say i left after two songs. its not the same. the kid gave it hell. but its not the same. i hope they attract a lotta new younger fans. but for the guys that were 21 in 1991 . bummmmer
Rock on Duvall! I love Chains. When Layne died, I thought it was over. I'm glad Jerry found a vocalist that could not only get along with the band, but sound sound a lot like Layne! There will never be another Layne Staley, but to find someone with a fairly close sound and the energy that Will has is phenominal! Jerry has worked hard for this and I believe that God has blessed him with another opportunity to continue to influence the world! Rock the fuck on Jerry Cantrell! You're a good man
if i close my eyes, it does sound like layne a little but since ive seen AiC three times before laynes death its hard to face the fact that they could have gone on.
there is no sing along with Alice in Chains. What is this? you can paint as good as Picasso but you are never going to be as relevant. it is called a pale copy.
Of course different, but awesome nonetheless. Much respect to AIC for still playing and writing kick-ass songs, to Jerry for being a fuckin genius, and Duvall for having the balls to pull this off.
By the way, this has more views than the 1993 live, because people weren't going back home on YouTube 16 years ago to check out the show they went to, or the show they missed...
he was tossing picks at the crowd, that was cool, people dont do that too often anymore, it was one of the benefits of buying front row tickets back then, you can look forward to maybe bringing home a momento, now youre assed if you even get a 70.00 dollar shirt that will last you 1 or 2 washes at the most.
the combination of layne and jerry will never be replaced, and layne was probably the most talented singer ive ever heard, but alice in chains is still an EXCELLENT fucking band without him, and better than any ofher band thats still around today. good for jerry to keep the band going, duvall is a great singer even if he isnt as good as layne and i cant think of anyone else who can do his job better
The replacement reminds me AC/DC's Bon Scott-Brian Johnson. Both great singers both of which made an overall awesome band. I can hardly tell a difference between Staley and DuVall. When I first heard Check My Brain, I was like "I've never heard this AIC song before. THen the radio is like new stuff from Alice in Chains. My brain went WTF. Staley come back from the dead.
YEAH man! That fucking it! Stupid fuckers. OF FREAKIN COURSE IT'S DIFFERENT! It will allways be, if any member passes out or something, he is not trying to be Layne, it's makes me so angry, when it's Inez playing Starr's shit they don't say the same do they? Asses
Sorry but..check this song live in Stockholm in 1993..there is a quite a difference...Why this version has more viewers than the live version with the ONLY ONE LAYNE? I don't f... understand
Stop dissing Duvall people. At least he's in the bands and keeping AIC alive, the more you slag him off, the more you slag the band off. AIC was/is more than Layne (god rest his soul).
WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS? IT'S AWFUL ... (and doesn't Sean look a little like steven seagal? - I don't know how to spell this guy name...) lol - Hated duvall singin' this song.. it's jerry's i know.. but for smbody who has listened to it with layne... hearing this is just ... u know... awful... sorry
alice in chains died when layne died. what a shame they still went on. write new music call the band something else. im sure layne looks at this and says "wheres the loyalty"?
That "where's the loyallty" comment is bulls#it... They didn't left Layne... LAYNE LEFT THEM! I've allways loved this band, and of course, Layne was THE singer for them, but you're seeing things the wrong way. Layne wasn't the band. He was ONE member of the band. I'm glad they're still doing it, and am lookink forward to listen to the new album.
Layne was too distinct, and at times he almost defined AIC, i'm, not saying Cantrell and the rest of the band should quit, i just think that they could at least get a new name
which is why ozzy should have stopped after randy rhoads died, and why metallica should have stopped after cliff burton died. they're clearly doing all the tours and performances and albums for money!!!!!! (notice the sarcasm). dude, seriously, not everything in the music business revolves around money, people can be people you know?
The Loyalty? If you actually knew anything about the band (which it's obvious you don't). You'd know Layne completely ditched the band long before he died. AIC was still inactive for the last 6 years of Layne's life. All because Layne wanted nothing to do with it. Where the loyalty now? I love Layne as much as the next person belive me. But everybody except Layne was loyal to the band. William DuVall is great, granted he's no Layne. But he's still a fantastic performer.
layne had a sickness with drug abuse and it probably ate at him every day thinking about the fact its consuming him and he couldnt get the motivation to tour or do anything but the drug. but the touring they do now is only for the money and in my opinion its disrespectful to layne. if duvall was a good buddy of the band back in the day it would be different. anyone who thinks duvall is good simply misses alice in chains. he is no better than a local karaoke singer at a bar in my opinion.
yeah, your right, or you're definitely wrong (i'm gonna chose the second one). the reason they're touring is because the missed being in alice in chains. for the love of god, every time a band loses a member or they keep going after someone dies, everyone says they should have stopped when that person was around. seriously, shut the fuck up, i loved layne's voice, but he's gone, and i don't know about you, but i'd like to see alice in chains keep writing music, because jerry cantrell is amazing
No. Take 30 seconds to look up the meaning of the song. "Rooster" is the nickname given to Jerry's father by his father (Jerry's grandfather) because of the way his hair looked in the morning after getting out of bed.
im not challenging what you said but i heard this for the first time on the radio last night and when i heard "walking tall machine gun man they spit on me and my homeland" the first thing that came to my mind was 'Nam and the video portrayed the war in "nam so thats whyi and so many other people think of nam
i often shortcut things...the song was about jerrys pop but they had name for the machine gun man...he was called the rooster.often looked like a rooster when firing the gun..
Saw Alice at Saint Andrews Hall in Detroit on the Dirt tour. One of the best acts ever. The sight of Layne when the curtain dropped is still vivid. Holding a half bottle of Jack, sun glasses and the mic stand. What a great loss.
First of all, I would like to say there will only be one Layne but if you haven't heard the new lead singer for AIC, please check out my videos!
He surprised the hell my buds and I when we saw them play over the summer. We actually thought when we showed up five minutes into the concert that a CD was playing the song "Again" over the PA's but when we finally got over the ridge we soon discovered that it was Duvall singing.
The only guy that deserves to sing in AiC, and with who no fcukin body will have ANY problem is Maynard James Keenan. Damn would it be powerful and devastating if MJK could have sing in AiC...
I agree he would be fantastic, but I do think there are others that could play the part. Walter Schreifels or Chris Cornell. But I also think William Duvall is good, give the bloke a chance and enjoy it while you can, rather than moan and groan like all the other soothsayers. Moaning about something you can't control never did anything for anyone.
I saw them in London in 1994 and I think it is great these songs are getting an airing. They are clearly loving it in this clip, especially Mike Inez - I love the fact I can hear the bass well plus I have a sub so it is even better! It is great to watch them and I am looking forward to seeing them in Perth, Australia in March with William Duvall. Chill out detractors.
so u'd rather have the guy become a heroin addict and then he'd be ok to sing for AIC ? jerry wrote most of the chains songs and sings on most of them. and the other guys had a hand in the band as well from the beginning (well inez halfway through) layne is one of my favorite singers but if their choice is to continue with a different singer u should respect the decision instead of being pissed because they didnt get someone with a heroin addiction for the purpose of "relating" to his lyrics
It's hard to see the things you love wimper and die and AIC was the single band that got me into music. Laynes death was a big loss and almost bittersweet to the last tracks he laid down in his career.
I wish AIC the best but have no expectations for them. Especially with this singer. AIC was more than good, but LAYNE made them GREAT. They shoulda left that chapter alone and started new.
I know! Jeff2870 is so annoying. I usually don't get too bothered by posters with opposing views, but constantly seeing this moron posting fucking NOVEL-length comments about his pseudo-intellectual garbage has begun to piss me off. I can't even watch an AIC video without seeing him on it, whining about something ridiculous.
Anyway. Yeah, DuVall sucked here, AS USUAL. I've only seen one video in which he didn't sound entirely bad. Still wasn't good. Just didn't make my ears bleed for once lol.
And your comments aren't too bad...if we take into consideration that you are a spineless jellyfish with shit for brains, a pussy on each side of your head (you call them ears) and the tiredest, most arrogant point of view of all the idiots. You sure do spend a lot of time on AIC w/Duvall videos...we're onto you, ringmeat! You really like Duvall, huh? I knew it. Remember me saying that about a year ago when you were spewing the same old tired shit? Oh my...you suck.
Like I said... REAL fans will love it. The whiny bitches like you will cry and fight. ANYONE who thinks that they're disgracing anything is 100% wrong. Go see them live and quit being a bitch.
exactly! Obviously Duvall can't match vocals with Layne and nobody else will either but that doesnt mean he sucks and doesn't deserve to sing in AiC. Duvall has talent, but people bitch all the time b/c he doesn't sound like Layne. From what I've seen on this vid i'm sure being there would've been amazing.
And to be honest, if you actually see him live, most of the songs he does sound a lot like Layne. I went to the concert with several friends that were incredibly impressed with how much alike they do sound. He adds a bluesy sound on some songs which is cool on occasion plus, he is an excellant guitar player... actually playing lead guitar on a few songs at the show I went to in KC last October. I, as well as all the real AiC fans, cannot wait for next year and the new album.
You are right, meowchef...AIC are sounding great and playing great shows, and the new fans they draw will want to check out the old stuff, too. They'll be hooked, and AIC will prosper. Some want to believe they are "smarter" than Jerry, more musical than Jerry, and they knew Layne better than Jerry. Pathetic. The comments they post would never be condoned by Layne were he alive to read them. The real AIC fans know who we are. And we know who we aren't. Dickviolets, you are on point, bitch.
And it's pretty much the same 8 or 9 people who write the negative comments all over Youtube. And they come back every couple of days to post ignorance, claiming "disrespect!" as if they knew Layne so much better than Jerry Cantrell. That is the most singularly stupid point of view I can imagine...unless you count Dickviolets who also thinks he knows what JC should call the band...(cause he has put so much more time & effort into AIC than Cantrell...PUKE)
Love all those "positive reviews" this ignorant comment is gettin', doncha monkeymeat? That "-6" means that's your IQ, fuckturd. But that petition to get Jerry to change the name is goin' strong, right? You fucking weak bitch. Butt-out with your goddamn 16-year-old's mentality and let the adults comment. Jackass.
I think that if they are wanting to bring back the spirit of AIC that Jerry should just do all of the vocals, but that might be a little hard. No matter who they get, Layne will never be replaced, and I dont think thats what they are trying to do. I just think that they want to tour and bring AIC to those who love them and to those who didnt get the friggin opportunity to see them when Layne was with us. I do commend them for trying to keep AIC alive. I wouldnt expect them to just give up.
i agree, and they r doing more than just touring now. Apparently they are going to be recording a new album in October and it should be out sometime in 09
The closer I listen to the vocals, the worse they sound. When I saw them in person, they sounded a little better but that's because of the crowd drowning out some of the vocals. When the crowd was more silent; the vocals weren't any better than this. I really want to like the new Alice but I just can't get used to the voice of Duvall. I just do NOT like Duvall enough for any "Alice" music period new or old material. Just don't like the sound of this voice but nothing personal towards him.
He murders most of the songs and he just doesnt bring that same rough feeling with his voice or his presence to the band. I think he should go back to slobbing the knob somewhere - he might be better at that
Wow, this is great! Its not Layne, but that isnt a problem (which is a great relief and a surprise ne ways ^^). Guess i'll start checking their new stuff.
Layne was great. All those songs were great. William looks to be great too. He'll never replace Layne but he sure will muster in the next era of AIC music. I, for one am curious and excited to hear it.
...isnt´he? That´s what matters. And it´s good they will create curiousity on younger people who will look in wikipedia "AIC" and will know on Earth lived an extraordinary man called Layne Staley who began all this with the rest of the band and he was and still is and will always be loved by his followers with all the respect. Regards, guys and let´s keep enjoying this wonderful music!! p.s.: AIC, We need you in Argentina!!
Some people show angry in these New AIC video comments, saying there won´t ever be another Layne. In my humble point of you I think we all know there will always be only one "me", only one "you" and so on extended to each living creature on this universe, matrix or whatever we live in. So I guess this is all out of controversy. I don´t think Will calls himself Layne in the mirror. He´s a guy with balls to support all the bad comments and tries to do his best, for what I see, with passion, isnt
I WAS THERE!!! No dropoff in from William Duvall at all. The emotion in the crowd from song one was amazing. William pointed behind the crowd to full moon rising, hinted that the next song was for Layne, and then Jerry Cantrell began playing Nutshell from the Jar of Flies album. Never forget Layne Staley!!
washed up? yeah that goes for one hit wonders from whichever era cashing in on their short lived fame...alice in chains still greatly influence the world of music, musicians and fans to this day. i don't believe that's going to change any time. if you were a musician, you'd understand; but i guess you're just a bit of a dropkick hey.
Deadviolets: I don't think you really know the meaning of "Washed Up". Washed up is Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, etc. AIC is definitely not washed up. And age has nothing to do with it. AIC was one of the most influential bands in the history of rock. In fact, when most people think of grunge and who started it and contributed the most, most would think of AIC. Yep, AIC and Soundgarden (not Nirvana).
They were influential and important in the history of rock. That's precisely why many fans dont want them making inferior music now with Duvall to screw up an otherwise spotless legacy. There's not a chance in hell the new album will hold a candle to the ones with Layne. So why bother? Part of being an artist is knowing when to walk away and leave the painting alone. Mess with it too much and you'll ruin it.
I do agree with you to a point. I don't like Duvall and never thought he did AIC any justice. NO, new albums wont come close to say, Dirt or Jar of Fliies. But I think that if they go back to the drawing board, can Duvall and find someone more appropriate, keep the original AIC musical sound, write more great stuff, and they'll be fine. You have to remember that Jerry Cantrell was the primary songwriter for AIC... and he's still alive. And they couldn't do a concert without doing the old stuff.
Okay,so we agree Duvall isn't cutting it.His tone isn't right, stage presence is goofy & distracting. He doesn't deliver the vocals with passion and rage like layne. He goes through the motions. If they were serious about going on as AIC they should've done a thorough search for a great singer. What they did, instead, was go with Duvall because Jerry and CWTF hooked up for Jerry's solo tour.Duvall just happened to fall into this position.Finding a replacement for Layne Staley shouldn't be that simple.
Yep, Duvall definitely isn't cutting it. I've never liked him and you're right, he's goofy and just doesn't fit in. I totally agree that replacing Layne isn't possible, and a descent stand-in would be difficult. But... they could do like Queen did when they elected to have Paul Rodgers stand-in. Replacing Freddie Mercury is an even bigger feat then replacing Layne, but they got a good guy to fill in. I think with a little searching and effort, AIC could do the same. But get rid of Duvall first.
this trolling isnt making my penis any larger.

AIC was still inactive for the last 6 years of Layne's life. All because Layne wanted nothing to do with it. Where the loyalty now? I love Layne as much as the next person belive me. But everybody except Layne was loyal to the band. William DuVall is great, granted he's no Layne. But he's still a fantastic performer.
forsbergfan21 2 years ago
layne had a sickness with drug abuse and it probably ate at him every day thinking about the fact its consuming him and he couldnt get the motivation to tour or do anything but the drug. but the touring they do now is only for the money and in my opinion its disrespectful to layne. if duvall was a good buddy of the band back in the day it would be different. anyone who thinks duvall is good simply misses alice in chains. he is no better than a local karaoke singer at a bar in my opinion.
markenhagen 2 years ago
yeah, your right, or you're definitely wrong (i'm gonna chose the second one). the reason they're touring is because the missed being in alice in chains. for the love of god, every time a band loses a member or they keep going after someone dies, everyone says they should have stopped when that person was around. seriously, shut the fuck up, i loved layne's voice, but he's gone, and i don't know about you, but i'd like to see alice in chains keep writing music, because jerry cantrell is amazing

I believe the song is about Jerry's dad. It is about 'Nam too. It's a great song.
piolapse420 2 years ago
No. Take 30 seconds to look up the meaning of the song. "Rooster" is the nickname given to Jerry's father by his father (Jerry's grandfather) because of the way his hair looked in the morning after getting out of bed.
MeowChef 2 years ago
im not challenging what you said but i heard this for the first time on the radio last night and when i heard "walking tall machine gun man they spit on me and my homeland" the first thing that came to my mind was 'Nam and the video portrayed the war in "nam so thats whyi and so many other people think of nam

JonnyKenaz 3 years ago
I agree he would be fantastic, but I do think there are others that could play the part. Walter Schreifels or Chris Cornell. But I also think William Duvall is good, give the bloke a chance and enjoy it while you can, rather than moan and groan like all the other soothsayers. Moaning about something you can't control never did anything for anyone.
astonmartinvee8 2 years ago 3
I'm far from "moaning and groaning". Just sayin' my opininion. Agree with the "Chris Cornell" thought. And the last thought of yours.

Like I said... REAL fans will love it. The whiny bitches like you will cry and fight. ANYONE who thinks that they're disgracing anything is 100% wrong. Go see them live and quit being a bitch.
MeowChef 3 years ago
exactly! Obviously Duvall can't match vocals with Layne and nobody else will either but that doesnt mean he sucks and doesn't deserve to sing in AiC. Duvall has talent, but people bitch all the time b/c he doesn't sound like Layne. From what I've seen on this vid i'm sure being there would've been amazing.
mosesxisxl33t 3 years ago
And to be honest, if you actually see him live, most of the songs he does sound a lot like Layne. I went to the concert with several friends that were incredibly impressed with how much alike they do sound. He adds a bluesy sound on some songs which is cool on occasion plus, he is an excellant guitar player... actually playing lead guitar on a few songs at the show I went to in KC last October. I, as well as all the real AiC fans, cannot wait for next year and the new album.
MeowChef 3 years ago 2
You are right, meowchef...AIC are sounding great and playing great shows, and the new fans they draw will want to check out the old stuff, too. They'll be hooked, and AIC will prosper. Some want to believe they are "smarter" than Jerry, more musical than Jerry, and they knew Layne better than Jerry. Pathetic. The comments they post would never be condoned by Layne were he alive to read them. The real AIC fans know who we are. And we know who we aren't. Dickviolets, you are on point, bitch.
Jeff2870 3 years ago
And it's pretty much the same 8 or 9 people who write the negative comments all over Youtube. And they come back every couple of days to post ignorance, claiming "disrespect!" as if they knew Layne so much better than Jerry Cantrell. That is the most singularly stupid point of view I can imagine...unless you count Dickviolets who also thinks he knows what JC should call the band...(cause he has put so much more time & effort into AIC than Cantrell...PUKE)

Jeff2870 3 years ago
I think that if they are wanting to bring back the spirit of AIC that Jerry should just do all of the vocals, but that might be a little hard. No matter who they get, Layne will never be replaced, and I dont think thats what they are trying to do. I just think that they want to tour and bring AIC to those who love them and to those who didnt get the friggin opportunity to see them when Layne was with us. I do commend them for trying to keep AIC alive. I wouldnt expect them to just give up.

UHHH? Just as good? I don't know what Layne Staley you were listening to? But it's not your brother's impression of him.
bigboss25262 3 years ago 3
The closer I listen to the vocals, the worse they sound. When I saw them in person, they sounded a little better but that's because of the crowd drowning out some of the vocals. When the crowd was more silent; the vocals weren't any better than this. I really want to like the new Alice but I just can't get used to the voice of Duvall. I just do NOT like Duvall enough for any "Alice" music period new or old material. Just don't like the sound of this voice but nothing personal towards him.
casey10bb 3 years ago
duvall completely sucks as the front man in AIC
He murders most of the songs and he just doesnt bring that same rough feeling with his voice or his presence to the band. I think he should go back to slobbing the knob somewhere - he might be better at that

They're all 40 years old and cashing in on songs writen 15 years ago and older. I think that's the definition of "washed up rockers".
deadviolets 3 years ago
Deadviolets: I don't think you really know the meaning of "Washed Up". Washed up is Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, etc. AIC is definitely not washed up. And age has nothing to do with it. AIC was one of the most influential bands in the history of rock. In fact, when most people think of grunge and who started it and contributed the most, most would think of AIC. Yep, AIC and Soundgarden (not Nirvana).
oldiesmusiconline 3 years ago
They were influential and important in the history of rock. That's precisely why many fans dont want them making inferior music now with Duvall to screw up an otherwise spotless legacy. There's not a chance in hell the new album will hold a candle to the ones with Layne. So why bother? Part of being an artist is knowing when to walk away and leave the painting alone. Mess with it too much and you'll ruin it.
deadviolets 3 years ago
I do agree with you to a point. I don't like Duvall and never thought he did AIC any justice. NO, new albums wont come close to say, Dirt or Jar of Fliies. But I think that if they go back to the drawing board, can Duvall and find someone more appropriate, keep the original AIC musical sound, write more great stuff, and they'll be fine. You have to remember that Jerry Cantrell was the primary songwriter for AIC... and he's still alive. And they couldn't do a concert without doing the old stuff.
oldiesmusiconline 3 years ago
Okay,so we agree Duvall isn't cutting it.His tone isn't right, stage presence is goofy & distracting. He doesn't deliver the vocals with passion and rage like layne. He goes through the motions. If they were serious about going on as AIC they should've done a thorough search for a great singer. What they did, instead, was go with Duvall because Jerry and CWTF hooked up for Jerry's solo tour.Duvall just happened to fall into this position.Finding a replacement for Layne Staley shouldn't be that simple.
deadviolets 3 years ago 2
Yep, Duvall definitely isn't cutting it. I've never liked him and you're right, he's goofy and just doesn't fit in. I totally agree that replacing Layne isn't possible, and a descent stand-in would be difficult. But... they could do like Queen did when they elected to have Paul Rodgers stand-in. Replacing Freddie Mercury is an even bigger feat then replacing Layne, but they got a good guy to fill in. I think with a little searching and effort, AIC could do the same. But get rid of Duvall first.
oldiesmusiconline 3 years ago
They are amazing live with William. That is all that matters. The new album that they are working on will be great.
