I've come to the conclusion that Van Halen's 1984 sound was the fuel behind Lee Roth's camp cheesy 80's style that he went on to have. Now his stuff is just plain shit! Yeah well done, Steve Vai can play guitar but when it has such a shitty sounding backing track then what's the point? Vai could do whatever he wanted but it wasn't gonna take away from the overall crap going on around him (like seriously, even some of the pointless "comedy intro's" are cringe-worthy). Van Halen destoys DLR solo!
