Woah! Got to get up on those pegs (feet on the grounf do no good here and could actually get hurt on those loose rocks) and must throttle up for momentum to carry you accross, you'd have to have olypmic powerlifter legs to "maneuver" a GS through that terrain. Speed up and let the bike "find" the way, it'll jigger and jolt but it won't fall so you just have to close those legs tight on the tank to hold on. Thanks halfthrottle.
@riecard I never could squat down and get my GS up, I grab the handle bars and yank it up. Just turned 60 and my back is still good, no pains, no bitches. Bumpy stuff like that will sure beat and wear you out, I find tossin caution to the wind and lettin it flow works best, let the beast have it's head and just keep it generally aimed and rolling. I've had the long step down and fallen over too. I lofted the front up on level ground and stalled the engine, if only it'd leaned right, timber!!
The idea is to keep in motion all the way through the rocks. The bikes movements will be more controlled and predictable that way. Stand up on the pegs for a better view of the trail ahead, and more leverage on the bike.
Nothing against BMW but i think this bike is to big and top heavy for real off road i know the rider makes a big difference but with a full tank of gas {i think about 10 gallons} its a hand full!
i am 6ft 5 and was wondering if i may occure accidents like this because im looking on getting one in the next year to ride on and off road but seen alot of people have problems with the weight of the bike while riding off roading???
@halfthrottle : So far, my ols XT600 slipped on ice at a trafficlight and my Varadero was once pushed over by a parking wanker in Berlin, and once it got blown over by a SAR-helicopter, while I was giving first aid. Luckyly I never fell seriously or crashed in 24 years! :-)
@halfthrottle Oh, come on!!! Thats such a stupid mistake! Bloody hell, poor BMW, how can you do that!!! such a dumb mistake! My poor baby BMW!!! Im upset now!
@halfthrottle Why beat the hell out of it, yeah, ok, use it yeah, get it muddy i do all the time, but not drop it, i love getting mine all dirty and going on lots of adventures, but i don't make these stupid mistakes!
Do not call THAT a crash. There was no sliding, grinding, bouncing, tumbling or shedding of parts. Dropped the bike is all. I have done it more times than I would like to count or remember.
LoL that's funny, I did something similar on my old GS. I had to top a ledge, no big assed deal, or so I thought. I got the front on top and then it stalled, it was about 1 foot further down to the ground then I could reach with my left foot, which was the way I was tippin, if it had tipped to the right I'd have been fine. That must be steeper then it looks in the video. I've dropped mine a number of times and never busted a thing, I had to pick it up 3 times in a few miles, snow sucks.
@boskejug Maybe wrong tyres to go off-road? Any bike with more than 10cm of clearance could make it up that slope but not if they cant get traction. Modified versions of the KTM 950 Adv and the R1200GS (The 950SE and HP2) have very similar weights and dimensions and yet are highly competitive in enduro events. Weight has less to do with it than you think, but it certainly makes life harder for less confident and experienced riders. Add road tyres to the equation and you are buggered.
@contactbiotrance The KLR comes in at 175kg dry, 195kg wet and the R1200GS comes in at 200kg dry, 220kg wet. Add in 100kg of rider + gear and you will find that the net mass of the set for a KLR is only 8% less than that of the R1200GS. Bigger riders and more gear narrows the gap further. The KLR is a fat pig just like the R1200GS but at least the GS comes with a lot more luxuries. Throw a 21'' front on the GS and they are about the same off-road. The GS will set you back 3 times more though.
@Pwn00b ..thanks for the information man...i dont think that 3 times more though...it just cant be..single cylinders make more fasters jumps starts than two cylinders..specialy boxer engines..for me.gs and their boxers engines are really big and not practical in off road way..gs only worth in road i think..klrs are very skini and tall bikes..but everybody can speak what they think..it can be compare..marines never gone to put gs in special situations....just klrs
@contactbiotrance Your not wrong about the KLRs being better off-road out of the box. And for the money you spend upgrading a GS to get it up-to-par you could build one hell of a KLR. So when you start talking about value for money, the KLR wins hands down. I dont know about the US, but in Australia the KLR is $8000 and the GS is $26000 on-road. As for Marines, remember that the American army has a fetish for M16s, as far as low-tech stuff (like bikes) goes, the Army almost never has the 'best'.
This has zero to do with height and everything to do with inexperience....but hey thats how we get experience right? Personally I dont take my Vee down roads like that my KX250 is better suited.
Long way home seems to have been a great show for BMW sales..:)
@d1incharge No, the 1200 stands for the $1200 you will have to spend on repairs each time you drop the bike. BMW mechanics charge more per hour than brain surgens.
@halfthrottle That is so not true! I have dumped mine a few times in varying situations and all I have lost was a lens from a turn signal. It is the parts that are pricey, but you can get around a lot of that if you know how to shop. BMW riders, by the way, know how to spell surgeon.
@d1incharge That is so not true! I have dumped mine a few times in varying situations and all I have lost was a lens from a turn signal. It is the parts that are pricey, but you can get around a lot of that if you know how to shop. BMW riders, by the way, know how to spell surgeon.
I fly up stuff like this on my WR250R, but I honestly don't know how I'd handle it on an R1200GS.... on my bike, while I'm moving, I can use my body weight to affect the position of the bike, but on a bike like that it would all be in the steering. Not as easy as it looks.
No doubt there are better DS bikes for this sort of riding, but I think his skills could have been better. Gotta keep the bike moving and be up on the pegs. Keep some moderate speed and avoid a big twist that might break the rear wheel loose. Once you stop on a hill like that, its hard to get going again. It looks like something I would do...
More speed and stand up man. We have a guy in group on 1200GS and he can go anywhere on this beast. It's all about who's holding hndlebars. no ofense ;o)
@polime77 - you don't know what you are talking about. Riding a GS means using different techniques than MX riders, and a different mind-set, but you can take them pretty much anywhere.
good try, it wouldn't be an easy climb as it looks fairly steep and very loose.
It's hard to keep the wheels under the weight of the bike when you're spinning and going very slowly, if you watch the vid it seems you back off when the bike is leaning which ment you had to hold the weight of the bike with one leg.
maintaining momentum on loose rocks is important then you can keep steering the bike to stay balanced.
I'm very entertained by your crash videos. As a new KLR owner who loves to test the limits of rider and bike, I'm very familiar with that helpless feeling of just jumping out of the bikes way as it tumbles.
I actually almost have it down to an art. I've masted the "dive and roll", and the "falling death grip of the clutch".
The last fall I had was quite comical. I was towing our school's SAE baja buggy in the mountain trails of WV. I've never felt so out of control of something. I had to bail in a way that I couldn't get up for a couple minutes... mostly because I couldn't stop laughing...
to bad you didn't get the back road to the crater in AZ wreck on video i'll bet that'd be awesome maybe you should make a cartoon of what you remember and post that ha ha that'd be cool
Wow...I desert race a Honda CRF 450R...and I just bought my first BMW 1200GSA. I ride stuff like this all the time on my Honda. Not sure if I will ever take my BMW off road like that. Biggest concern...I can't imagine how much money you lose on the bike as soon as you drop it ONCE. You really need two bikes.
With the crash bars it's not to big of a deal so long as you are going slow. I have laid that bike down many times like that and it's fine. When people see it in person they ask if I've replaced the side panels. Amazing what a little armor all will do.
Yeah but that's the point. These video's would be completely unremarkable if we were on dirt bikes. The point is we are on big dual sports doing difficult roads.
P.S. I would have made it up this hill, but I had to stop to let a dirt biker come down. Then I couldn't get going again:(
Impressed or not, the only thing that matters is people watching the video.
What if I had made it? And titled the video. "Motorcycle makes it safely up the hill." It would probably have around 3 views by now, 2 of them from me.
bet you got some serious road rash on that high speed crash

k1200sman 2 years ago
good try, it wouldn't be an easy climb as it looks fairly steep and very loose.
It's hard to keep the wheels under the weight of the bike when you're spinning and going very slowly, if you watch the vid it seems you back off when the bike is leaning which ment you had to hold the weight of the bike with one leg.
maintaining momentum on loose rocks is important then you can keep steering the bike to stay balanced.

at least he had a go :-) bit more training, standing up and let the bike do the work he will fly up there :-)

Yippee!

Well next you think you might fall be sure to get out the video camera. I like seeing other people fall much more than doing it myself.

I wish I owned one!
The last fall I had was quite comical. I was towing our school's SAE baja buggy in the mountain trails of WV. I've never felt so out of control of something. I had to bail in a way that I couldn't get up for a couple minutes... mostly because I couldn't stop laughing...
Someday. Someday. I'll keep you posted.

i'd love to buy a bmw gs that's all bashed to shit so that I can use it for what it's meant for without losing a fortune on the value of the bike.
unfortunately, only yuppies own bmw's here (Toronto) and the bikes are all in mint condition because all the owners are pussies who never go offroad

OUCH! Hope he and the bike are ok... I think you guys BOTH have the wrong bikes for this kind of trip..

Yeah but that's the point. These video's would be completely unremarkable if we were on dirt bikes. The point is we are on big dual sports doing difficult roads.
P.S. I would have made it up this hill, but I had to stop to let a dirt biker come down. Then I couldn't get going again:(
halfthrottle 2 years ago
You're not really impressing anyone though.
Especially when you fall.
I think that was his "point".
njd2389 2 years ago
Impressed or not, the only thing that matters is people watching the video.
What if I had made it? And titled the video. "Motorcycle makes it safely up the hill." It would probably have around 3 views by now, 2 of them from me.
