The competition between the Soviets and the US was great for science. For them to take any photos at all in an environment as harsh as Venus is amazing, even now! What a feat.

As an American, I really do miss the Soviets, they kept Americans on their toes with Technology and NASA. Without Sputnik, there would be no Explorer. No Vostok/Vokshod/Soyuz, no Mercury/Gemini/Apollo. No N1, No Saturn V, No Buran, no Space Shuttle. No Salyut, No Skylab.....I can go on and on.

Soviet technology was the best technology during its lifetime. Almost all firsts belong to Soviet Union, exept manned mon landing mission because of financial problems. Soviet Union collapsed physicly but it will always live in my heart and in many many other peoples hearts.

Venera 4 was the first successful Soviet planetary mission. Launched in June 1967, arrived at Venus in October 1967, penetrated the Venusian atmosphere but failed to land as the pressure in the atmosphere was too high. First landing on Venus was Venera 7 in 1970...
