As for idiots...Well we've got plenty of 'em in the UK. If the train dosn't get 'em then sometimes the live rail, {on some lines}, does. People don't really appreciate the danger of that innocuous looking third rail with 750 volts DC running through it...Except when they see what it does to their friends..!!! It isn't pretty.

The train has a pick up shoe which glides along the top of the power rail. The rail is completely exposed. Any completely new rail electrification projects cannot use this system, however, it can be extended to attached non electrified lines such as from Basingstoke to Salisbury which at the moment uses diesel units.

Here in the Netherlands this simply is impossible: when a train activates the crossing when the gates are opening, the crossing will close again when the gates reach the 'open-contact' after that it will close immediately: therefore we have the warning 'Wait for the red signal to go out, there could be another train coming' (I don't mean that we don't have idiots like this here in the Netherlands (cos we do) but a crossing can never go unactivated with a second train so close by
