They are nothing special in my opinion they were needed back in the 1800s but not now, diesel and electric power is better than steam because they can haul more than steam engines can, and they make better noise especially the EMDs.
@CSXRP steam makes the better noise. In fact, most people today would perfer the sound of steam over diesles. If you are going to make a negative comment about steam, keep it to yourself because many of us work hard to get steam up and running for the public to enjoy.
@Kleman09 There is no way those worthless pieces of crap make better noise than EMDs do, the horns on them arn't as great and I've read so many comments on recent videos saying that nothing beats the sound of the horns the EMDs have. Comparing the sound of a K5LLA or an RS5T those would get the votes than the horn a steam engine uses. Along with the sound of an EMD in the 8th notch going up the grade. Steam engines are junk that can't last up a grade with 10 cars without the help of a diesel.
@CSXRP steam locos have whistles and not horns. whistles sound better than horns. Also, steam proved itself to be equal and sometimes better in power than a diesle. In some instances, railroads postponed diesle buying because steam proved more powerful. Also, dont judge steam by its size because they will surprise you. I know the power of steam because i work on one. Some steam could pull a mile long train on steep grades. took many 50 years for diesles to match that!
@Kleman09 I've vollunteered for a railroad that used a steam engine and it needed the help when going up the grade from one of the diesels they purchased. I've also seen a SD70ACe pull a mile and a half long loaded coal train up a grade without the assistance. So I believe EMD has outdone steam power and ALCO is also pretty much out of business.
@HaloCE14 Ya really, Steam Engines are the real railkings.
