The closest you can get is alternative metal, otherwise you're stuck classifying each and every song.

to classify them by what they sound like is a waste of time, man. They´re grunge cause they were part of the grunge scene. Its like comparing Clash to Sex Pistols or Talking Heads to Ramones, in both cases the bands are almost antagonic, but theyre in the same scene.

They were a part of the grunge scene in as much as they influenced bands who were later called "grunge." They were never really a part of any scene, they stood on their own, changed their sound and adapted while their counterparts fizzled out. In the same vein, I wouldn't call Pearl Jam grunge.
