They were a part of the grunge scene in as much as they influenced bands who were later called "grunge." They were never really a part of any scene, they stood on their own, changed their sound and adapted while their counterparts fizzled out. In the same vein, I wouldn't call Pearl Jam grunge.

That's the point. Most lyrics really don't mean anything. Stairway, Purple Haze, Teen Spirt... The power of the song transcended the lyrics to the point that the lyrics were pointless. Just a bunch on phonics that sound great together.
