London City Airport has a 5.5 degree glide slope (angle of descent on approach) compared to 3 degrees at most airports. That's almost twice as steep. Add in the late windshear and the pilot doesn't have much option.
whatever (non pilot) people say below, this was a GREAT landing, given the wind conditions (that are quite evident to anyone with a barely decent sense of sight) !
Not just a downward shear, but also a serious crosswind. Look at the crabbing. And, as the crabbing shows, the conditions are changing moment to moment. Looks like the pilot came in a little hot (holding higher airspeed helps with control), then had to begin slowing down abruptly. I don't care if this was a woman, a man, or a chimp, it was an OK landing under difficult conditions.
I cannot tell you how much I love this landing... Looks like the pilot had to use the bathroom real bad... I'm landing this plane... and i'm landing it now!
He was probably on the toilet before the plane even came to a stop. When you gotta go... you gotta go.
damn! seeing as the airport is smack dab in the middle of London, i can see why there would be such crazy airflows, due to the buildings and what not. although, that looked pretty rough, the pilots probably could've slept through that if they were sleepin in the cabin or land with instruments only
Quite amazing that the plane did not topple over considering the speed with which it hit the runway...amazing stuff. Wonder what kind of structural damage it had after this!!!
This is what is called verical Wind Shear from hell. Note the nose going down and while it goes down. Right before impact the nose is pulled up. Man, talking about some good piloting skills on that runaway. And you know what I would be freaking out but my niece would be putting her arms in the air and going weeeeeeeeeee............. 0.o Thats the way she is.
sometimes referred to as windshear or wind gradient, is a difference in wind speed and direction over a relatively short distance in the atmosphere. Wind shear can be broken down into vertical and horizontal components, with horizontal wind shear seen across weather fronts and near the coast, and vertical shear typically near the surface, though also at higher levels in the atmosphere near upper level jets and frontal zones aloft.
hoooo!!! crazy landing !!! good luck for the maintenance !! lol !! it's not a landing ! it's a controlled crash !! the passengers must have screamed !!!
Holy shit...lucky those old doggs can take a beating, that got slammed down hard.

i think the angle of descent is also pretty steep into LCY, but fuck those people paid to be flown around like that :(

bad but lucky landing...better a go around in that conditions

Good thing the RJ85 didn't flipped over on the runway. Was kinda close.

Why were the speed brakes deployed? never seen them deployed prior to landing?

it was not a pilot error..this phenomena called WIND SHEAR

@alexisdiaz78 maybe you are right, but look how the aircarft was stabilazed late! look that column had forced back really to late...

either that landing pad was made of nylon or the pilot had a too fast drop rate and didn't get the angle right.
knightj60 2 years ago
tthe sink rate was too fast.

London city has a very steep decend and it was v. windy so it wasnt the pilots fault although he got of handled the situation better.

I'd abort landing. With that sink rate it's wonder the plane didn't fall apart
romeo10alpha 2 years ago
weeeell after the 5 degree GS at London City u cant just instantly stabilise the sinkrate
CRANKYGERMAN 2 years ago
@hugofield1990 Yeah, well thats why you don't land if the windshear like that... GO to another airport instead of putting everyone in danger.
