i was a skeptic till i really watched tabu in chandni bar and astitva, till date i havn't seen better female actor performances in bollywood, her acting was pitch perfect and outstandingly natural, if she can perform these roles with utter ease what can she do in character based movies. deserves her 2 national awards and should have won more. sorry but tabu is too good for indian movies as most indian films are commercial crap and the rest are class movies like chandni bar which dnt get recgnsd

it was really excellent story. the mother was trying to grow up her children like others so that they can spend their lives like civilized citizen but the society which is a pool of good and bad people does not allow her to spend a good life. the roots of the parents impact children's future life and the society create circumstances against their nature and they follow the bad ways due to the svere and harsh words of people.

Madhur Bhandarkar is an awful director - his movies may become somewhat popular with indian audiences but internationally they would be considered nothing more than pure and utter "garbage". What he depicts in his movies are EXTREMES - not the norm even within the worst of Indian society. His movies either focus on poor people or nouveau riche in India - and in both cases he shows unrealistic, extreme views. Most poor in India are not prostitutes and gangsters -but they earn an honest living too

The movie isn't that "unrealistic" and at the same time it doesn't really implicate that this is the life of everyone in the city, but it is based on a bar dancer's journey.

Aren't most action, sci-fi, drama, even comedy movies based on "extreme" situations and stories? If you didn't like the movie just say so...

This is why everyone has to be educated and refrain from doing illegal things in their life. It doesn't just affect their own lives but also ruins their families.

A great piece of work from Madhur Bhandarkar. Impeccable acting by Tabu.

But it's so sadly surprising that no matter how many such movies are made, there is really no change in the society that we see.

I sincerely hope these movies create some awareness amongst people and make our world a better place.

Great movie. First of all, a great story and great direction. As Akaila82 said, this is a Madhur Bhandarkar masterpiece. He is tremendously expert in making realistic and meaningful movies. Chandni Bar, Page 3, Traffic Signal, Fashion, all are so realistic.

Tabu's acting was sensational. She is really an actress of the level of Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil. Tabu, you are great.

Rajpal Yadav's performance of the supporting role was perfect. All in all, a perfect movie.

it's interesting that the kids both lose their naivete but mother never does. mumtaz remains the simple village girl throughout, shocked & crushed each time calamity strikes. the kids though become hardened as youth.

i guess it goes to show that everyone is ultimately a product of where they are raised, no matter where they live after that.

I think this version is the censored one because it doesn't properly show the part when Payal (her daughter) limps when she gets off the minicoach, and when the two boys perform sexual acts on the Abhay (the son). Good film.
