@Khultan We do. Its on a DVD we made for a Billy Cowsill Benefit concert and gave to attendees. It's called The Cowsills TV-DVD. I have seen it up on Ebay. You may want to look there.
They really didn't get the recognition that they deserved. More talent there than with the Partridge Family. Most of them didn't play instruments or sing (except for David Cassidy and Shirley Jones).
No lie! I think The Cowsills were quasi "Blackballed," ya know? I was born in 1960 and never heard of them. When I was 9 the grade-school biatches should've been nuts for Barry and his bros. But the DJs never announced them, no lie. I didn't get Teen Beat magazines, so I don't know if the bros and Susan got press or not. Sadly I missed Ed Sullivan the nights they were on. But I'm a huge fan as of yesterday when I got their debut album at the Sally Army thrift store.
This brought back precious memories. Not only this song but WAAAY back when they were all babies and just charming children. BIlly had such a strong clear voice. But they are all great as individuals and as a group.
The Cowsills and Osmonds share a sad history... both made alot of money and both families finances were severely mismanaged by parents and others. The kids were left to basically start over. There needs to be criminal penalties for people that do this to kids.
The brothers were Bill ( deceased 2006), Bob ( with the gap between his front teeth, Paul ( high cheekbones and handsome), Barry ( died in Hurricane Katrina 2005; unknown date of death), John ( drummer; still rockin and rollin) and Susan ( still going strong). Their mom , Barbara ( died in 1985) also sang with them.. they were the inspiration for the Partridge Family.
There is another brother ( Richard, who is the twin of Bob... gap teeth...) He was never in the band but I understand he sung with the remaining Cowsills a few years ago.
Im sorry i couldnt help you and your pain, when we drunkenly jammed in that bar on wave avenue in Newport in 2005. YOU were in deep and so was i, go easy as you always said, "When the lights dim and the din dies down, and the amps barely hummm just slip into the darkness
I do have a question: in the photo at 1:05 is that Richard Cowsill, "the missing Cowsill," standing between Barry and Bob?
Poor Richard. His dad wouldn't let him in the band, and eventually kicked him out of the house. So Richard ends up joining the Army and fighting in Vietnam while his siblings were touring the country as major pop stars! I can't imagine how that must have felt!
That was Billy who was kicked out for smoking weed. (Sounds preposterous, but it is true).
Richard, who is Bob's twin, had a stuttering problem as a kid so that kept him out of the band. As for being booted out the house, Richard claimed that at 18 he simply would not stand for anymore of his father's abuse which according to Richard was severe on all of them including throwing one kid through a glass door, burning another with a cigarette, and routine beatings with fists.
Not all the Cowsills agree with Richard's version of their father as a monster. John has stated the stuff about burning cigarettes and glass doors is not true. Richard says John is in denial. However, all the Cowsills agree that their father, a Navy lifer, was a very strict disciplinarian. They just disagree on the severity of his discipline.
I think, Mkeogh76, that being this musical family, is this correct, originated by the father after the first two boys exhibited talent and 'recruiting' the other children following that and the fact that their father was a strict person and a military one at that, it's almost impossible to entertain the thought that some kind of freedom be allowed and not be severe. I know this is a business. But, father doesn't always knows what's best.
Bill Senior ( aka Bud) was a retired Navy guy.. pretty strict. He kicked out Bill and then Richard. I have heard other talk about abuse but who really knows except the family.
i was a friend of barrys in 1960s in santa barbara and isla vista calif he used to play under the name of barry c i never saw the cowsills show so i didnt know how famous he was
we used to jam together and 1 nite we were watching the david lettermen show and he said the top things that we dont want is a cowsill reunion
poor barry i miss him
i had no idea that david cassidy had a entire career from him
Barry was so talented, handsome, and seems to have been a really sweet person with a great sense of humor. What a charmer! I'm sure he is dearly missed by his family and friends. Rest in peace, Barry and thanks for the music.
Strangest thing. I'm with you guys. Hadn't thought of the Cowsills in over 30+ years. Now I'm looking for all things Cowsills. How did that happen? I have no answer. Such a great sound! That harmony is better than any drug.
I always thought that Barry was the best-looking one of the brothers and also had the best stage presence. I hoped that someone would come along and offer to just mange HIM as a solo act starting in his teens when he was at the height of his good looks. He was ALOT better looking than most of the "teen idols" of the 60's and early 70's and had a MUCH better voice too!
Great looking back... I've been on a Cowsill search all weekend long... Truely one of the most talented groups of all time... The way they could harmonize is astonishing... Thanks for sharing this... !
I'm with you, Eric. Suddenly EVERYTHING Cowsill fascinates, reverberates and resonates throughout me. So young and so talented. They were gifted, for sure. Try and find their CD Live/On My Side. On My Side is SORELY forgotten and underrated. xho.
What great memories...those were some fun times on La Mesa huh? Horseback riding, the trampoline... Barry, will always be missed! (tear) So glad Bob, Susan, John and Paul keep playing all those hits and and the new ones on Global! (A GREAT CD) Cheers to The Cowsills!
hAVEN'T SEEN THIS FOOTAGE IN ALONG TIME NOR DO I REMEBER THIS SHOW. BUT THEY WERE ON THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW. I AM ONLY SORRY TO HAVE HEARD THAT BARRY WAS IN THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME WHEN KATRINA HIT. I WAS IN MISS WHEN THIS HAPPENED. IT CAME TO JACKSON WHERE I AM AND DID ALOT OF DAMAGE. BUT I DIDN'T EXPECT TO HEAR THAT BARRY WAS CAUGHT UP IN IT!! THIS WAS GREAT FOOTAGE AND YOU DID A GREAT JOB !
Lovely video and yet so sad to watch. Barry Cowsill always stood out to me. You could tell this kid loved playing his bass guitar. Hope he has found peace.
I watch this clip, and you can see how groups like the Osmonds and Partridge Family stole their thunder. These guys must have wanted to die, watching all these groups make money on their ideas. This show business game is really cruel, but at least the Cowsills had their moment. I guess they lost all their money as well. Great clip!!
Chuck, the story I heard was that the Cowsills were the 'real life' Partridge Family (or at least the inspiration for creating the PF).
The Cowsills road manager kept a diary of what happened while the band was on the road, and somehow a TV script-writer got hold of it and the rest is history. Apparently David Cassidy was cast as the oldest Partridge son because his voice sounded so similar.
'The Partridge stole their thunder.' The Cowsills did fine without associating with Mr. Sherwood Schwartz. Sherwood depended on the astounding gullibility of American youth's television watching tendencies. Are you not aware that only two of the fictionally created musical family The Partridge actually have musical background?
Sherwood Schwartz had nothing to do with the Partridge Family! You're thinking the Brady Bunch. Both shows aired originally on Friday nights and that's it.

If I had to pick 1 song that summed up the heart of 60's and 70's music It would be The Rain,The Park, and Other Things.
The group would be the Cowsills.
Yes I believe; the sounds of the Cowsills will live on in Heaven too.
In a World were so much suffering and hate exhist God; put his Love in the form of heavenly music for all of us.
Let us who continue in this life carry the torch of love, compassion, understanding,
forgiving,and helping one another.
God Bless The Cowsills
