@Orangebike666 He might have gotten lucky. From what I can see he didn't put weight on his leg when he hit the deck, and it looked as if his weight was spread out so he might just only be feeling it in the morning. A really BAD morning.
@foolbird2 uhhh I just watched it with the sound. I really hope that is his gear making that sound even though I doubt it. Makes me cringe I got lucky only with breaking my wrist that looks like a leg or foot. Best wishes tho...
@Lintassimilator How many times have you done this? You do it firts, get good at it, and then you can call others jackasses. Else, you are the ignorant jackass.
@Lintassimilator Fact is, no one is ever done training, ever. Have you ever fast roped? Imagine trapping a 45lb plate to your back and a couple of 20lb dumbells to your hips and stepping out to the edge of a 5 or 6 story bldg, reaching and grabbing a rope, pinching it with your feet, and do a control fall. Try it yourself first, then you can see how easy a mistake can happen.
@zer0dahero I can imagine doing this with all your gear would be interesting, to say the least, but spare a thought for those that do it without pinching the rope with their feet. I've seen it done in a demonstration here in the UK, they said it was special forces, but maybe it could have been the RAF Regiment even though the last I heard was that fastroping was limited to UKSF over here. Carrying the same amount of gear and only using hands to brake, because ropes get oily from boot polish.
@thatman64 You've seen it done? Thats nice. I spent a little over three years treaching this as part of the air assaut course. Its possible my perspective is different than that of a spectator.
@NMDANNY good point. Most training sites will have safety controls such as some kind of cushion. I dont understand why the commander would sign a risk assesrmernt where the safety controls where not adequate.
@astra4488 Why not? They have them in the ship's gym, i know that for a fact. As a commander, training and safety is your responsibility per regulations and SOP. I suspect you have no idea of what you're talking about. Have you even served a single day in the military? If you have served any time at all, you would know better so its safe to say that you are, by no fault of your own, ignorant of this particular topic. Come back when you have something intelligent to add, good bye.
@astra4488 Im a non commisioned officer, so I work for a living. However, by your comment, everyone who is in the service can tell you are ignorant on this particular area. Not ur fault, you just don't know any better. BTW, its terrible that at one point, you tried to claim that marine to be your son. How sad...
That is what I call "good training". Yes, when fast roping it is ideal to spread your legs at the end of the rope. However, this Marine knew that was out of question and reverted to the famous Parachute Landing Fall. He put his feet and knees together and eyes on the horizon (to low to pull a slip) and rode the bitch in. That man is going place, no shit... JK
Thats exactly why fast roping is fucking dangerous. Even more so when you are roping out of a helicopter from 40+ ft. I have only roped out of UH-60 Black hawks though. Not Sea Stallions or Sea Knights like the marines use. I think those helicopters are a little safer though because they rope from hell hole and not out the doors. But when you go out the doors its defiantly a lot faster.
See the you tube video of the frictionless descender. Search for j-arms. This rappelling device will revolutionize the sport and rescue applications. There is always an easier solution.
That Marine was in my platoon for our last deployment to Iraq and this video was taken on board the USS Bataan in 2007 during the 26th MEU's deployment that year. He walked away and fast roped two more times, just a little shaken up. Mistakes happen, and it was on the second run I believe when we weren't wearing full gear. He is really tired of everyone joking about it.

nope, your meant to be legs spread and bent ,watching for the ground that's rapidly coming at you. When you've got loads of stuff on and the fast roping gets more"exciting," you get as much of you as you can on the bugger ,but its not good form.
and btw...for all you know it alls...it wasn't a careless mistake on his part...the guy in front of him snagged the rope and it was jerked out of his hands...he's lucky to be alive!!! ~*~his sister~*~

Prime example why proper training is important. There's no real safety when fast roping.
