This movie was released by AIP(American International Pictures),whose library is owned by MGM(whose DVDs are distributed by Fox,even though Sony owns MGM))through thier acqiusition of the Orion library.
As for the GP/PG rating, when the PG was enacted in 1973,the advisory was "May Not Be Suitable For Pre-Teenagers".
In mid 1978,"Pre-Teenagers" was changed to "Children",but some films still had the former on prints and in publicity materials.
I think I may have a bootleg version of this somewhere that I purchased at a Fangoria Con back in the day. I have not seen it in a while, it is supposed to be great.
Melody Patterson from F-Troop was in this movie...I met her several years ago and she looks awesome and is a terrific person..Humble and down to earth...She loved the gift I gave her..awesome movie
Yeah, I saw this when I was like-10 years old. Vic Tayback from "Alice' was in it. It was disturbing for kids because it was about a kid in an evil orphanage. With that creepy guy chasing him with a hammer. Looked just like Mr. Caetano, my 7th grade science teacher.
Nope -- GP was what we now call PG. There really was no such thing as PG-13 until 1984; I believe the first movie to be rated PG-13 was "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom."
That's crazy! This movie sure would be a PG-13, or even an R, if it came out in these times due to the graphic violence. My mother told me about how she went to see this movie with my uncle when she was a teenager, and my uncle threw up seeing a guy get his arm chopped off.
G, GP, M, X...G, PG, (then later) PG-13, NC 17...Speaking of GP or PG, I remember the days of three catagories, PG Suitable, PG Suitable Except..., PG Not Suitable. Is this confusing or does it make sense?
Hmmmmmm...yes and yes. I think I understand: the whole idea of "Parental Guidance Suggested," I believe, is that the parents or guardian accompany the child and pretty much use their own judgment as to the suitability of the content. I think it's also supposed to be slightly more flexible than an R-rating, which pretty much makes the presence of adult decidedly more mandatory.
G, GP, M, X, PG, PG 13, R, NC 17, XXX lol...But do you remember after GP and before PG 13, they had three levels of PG? Suitable, Suitable Except and Not Suitable. You may have already answered this but I was trying to clarify my statement/question. The rating system, I believe, started circa 1968 or 1969 because producers and studios were starting to include profanity, nudity, sex and graphic violence. Am I correct?
I could watch Gloria Grahame in anything

What (exactly) does or did the rating "GP" stand for? My guess is "Guidance Preferred."

this film disturbed the shit out of me as a kid. one of the great mysteries of cult film fandom is how this flick garnered a pg rating.
