They managed to escape because the B-29’s route ran only 20-30 km from the coastline. This was restricted area for MIGs. The Americans managed to bring down only one MiG-15.
The pilots were ordered to destroy the bombers without engaging in battle with the cover as possible. MiGs attacked in pairs, through the system of american fighters, who were forced to peel off to the side to avoid collisions. As a result, according to the general Lobov, Soviet pilots shot down 12 B-29s and four F-84. In addition, many of the "Fortress" were damaged - almost everyone returning crew brought the dead and wounded.
Two divisions (324 fighter regiment under the command of three times Hero of the Soviet Union Ivan Nikitovich Kozhedub and 303 fighter regiment under the command of Georgy Ageevich Lobov) . Another 12 MIGs remained on the ground as a reserve in case of an enemy breakthrough to the crossings and airports.

Mig-15 definitely had and advantage over the Sabre. It was capable of tighter turns, supreme acceleration, had a greater high altitude performance, was lighter, could take more damage. The only reason why the Sabre had many kills is just because Korean pilots weren't trained to fight at all..

The Brits evaluated machine gun vs cannon armament and found 4 x 20 mm more lethal than 6 x .50 cal, for the same installed weight.
6 x .50 cal are lethal but you can do the same damage carrying less weight around if you have 20 mm cannons. The M2 is a rather heavy weapon for its caliber too.
MiG-15 was a fine aeroplane, too bad the Soviets couldn't build a decent jet engine. Too bad the Brits were so stupid that they sold a Rolls-Royce Nene to Stalin who then copied it. Fools!
well the mig wasn't a very stable gun platform it was meant to take out bombers and the ballistics of the 37mm cannon and the 2 23mm cannons were a lil odd when fighting smaller aircraft like sabers the 37 would pass under the target and the 23 would pass above couple that with the poorly trained north Korean pilots and u got a bad combination that's y i think the only mig kills were from the soviet pilots
i guess that refers to the moment of the fight. How many great german / japanese flyers died due to overwhelming odds and inferior technologies? I doubt you'd find a better pilot than richtofen in ww1 yet the situation killed him.

yessir, you are very correct. a good example was Tommy McGuire. He was a good pilot with 38 kills, a better plane p-38 than a zero. He has 3 rules before engaging in combat, yet he violated all those 3 rules. 1. never engage the enemy at slow speed. 2, don't dogfight with your drop tanks 3. don't dogfight at low altitude. he fell in negros island after encountering a lone zero.
the Sabre only got upgrades to its airframe like hydraulically boosted ailerons and what not and the wings slightly altered but the guns remained the same 6 50cal machine guns while they r powerful they don't have the knockdown power or range of the migs 37 and 20mm cannons
um the 50.cal has a further range an a faster rate of fire. and it also holds more ammo an shoots API rounds. the 37mm an 20mm are deadly but as seen in WW2 they means they have less ammo.
you do not need a lot of cannon rounds...bigger and heavier ammo packs a bigger punch than .50 cal..USA themselves admitted that cannons were more effective than machine guns....you do not need really far range for ammo since you gotta get in fairly close for a gun kill
I have read that at a far enough range the cannon shells from a mig would miss the target due to the difference in trajectory of the 37mm vs. the 20mm.
mmmmmm, I believe @ high speeds it was when it came to making turns using hydraulic assited controls vs. the Mig15's manual controls it was, but other than that the Mig15 was more manueverable.
The F86 was slightly more maneuverable than the MiG-15 but the MiG was faster and had a better climb rate... but the biggest factor was that our pilots were better trained.

Also I'll add that the F86's full maneuvering tail surface was the biggest factor that gave the F86 better maneuverability over the MiG-15
Both aircrafts were equivalent except for few little characteristics. The most important part was the pilot. Remember what Chuck Yeager said: "It's the man, not the machine."
Yes the pilot was the greatest factor. However, you can't leave out the machine totally... the F86 had a few very important advantages over the MiG-15. Mainly the hydrolic controls that improved the pilot's control over the plane in tight maneuvering, and the electronic aiming sights that the F86 had. But those advantages mean nothing if the pilot isn't skilled enough to get the most out of the plane.

Yeah the MiG had a great climb rate, but the armament was a give-and-take. While the combination of 2x23mm cannons and the massive 37mm cannon gave the MiG superior firepower, they were slower firing than the F86's 6x.50cals. I believe that the cannons held fewer rounds too, but that's not much of a problem because fewer rounds are needed.

When F-86 was designed, US equiped it with the standard guns that gave excelent results in WW2 againts fighters, the 6x12,7mm. I would have done the same, if they were good, why a change?
The Fagot, by the way, was equiped as an interceptor. If US had known the existence of the MiG-15 they would have probably changed the armament like the versions H and K with 4x20mm cannons.
I totally agree, while they don't pack the same punch as cannons, the browning .50cals were still powerful, didn't overheat as fast, lighter, carried more ammo, and fired faster making them a very good choice at the time for a fighter that was designed for attacking other fighters.
That I also knew, the MiG-15bis was designed specifically for attacking and shooting down enemy bombers hence the extremely heavy armament. Like I said, both armament designs had both advantages and disadvantages.
if a 37mm punches into any part of the plane- say bye bye...if russian migs had lead computing gyro sights, they would of had greater results than the sabres because it takes just one or two rounds to shoot down a plane- unlike sabre 50-100(also depends where u hit)

Yes. It worked very well. When the cold war ended the Americans were astonished to see that they greatly overestimated Russian airpower. However, when you have nukes and missles to put them on, it really does not matter.

And weve made a huge mistake in how long we have invested ourselves there. very nice. history channel made damn good vids. gnarly graphics. um anyone know the pilot who got in a tangle wit a "honcho" in korea and ended up flying down a river bed wit the bastard and finally took him by getting on the "honchos" 3 o clock then slammed his air break and was able to get on his 6 and take him out i believe right next to the koreans air base. idk i remember watchin it years ago. it was something else.

The Brits evaluated machine gun vs cannon armament and found 4 x 20 mm more lethal than 6 x .50 cal, for the same installed weight.
6 x .50 cal are lethal but you can do the same damage carrying less weight around if you have 20 mm cannons. The M2 is a rather heavy weapon for its caliber too.
MiG-15 was a fine aeroplane, too bad the Soviets couldn't build a decent jet engine. Too bad the Brits were so stupid that they sold a Rolls-Royce Nene to Stalin who then copied it. Fools!

well the mig wasn't a very stable gun platform it was meant to take out bombers and the ballistics of the 37mm cannon and the 2 23mm cannons were a lil odd when fighting smaller aircraft like sabers the 37 would pass under the target and the 23 would pass above couple that with the poorly trained north Korean pilots and u got a bad combination that's y i think the only mig kills were from the soviet pilots

i guess that refers to the moment of the fight. How many great german / japanese flyers died due to overwhelming odds and inferior technologies? I doubt you'd find a better pilot than richtofen in ww1 yet the situation killed him.

yessir, you are very correct. a good example was Tommy McGuire. He was a good pilot with 38 kills, a better plane p-38 than a zero. He has 3 rules before engaging in combat, yet he violated all those 3 rules. 1. never engage the enemy at slow speed. 2, don't dogfight with your drop tanks 3. don't dogfight at low altitude. he fell in negros island after encountering a lone zero.

the Sabre only got upgrades to its airframe like hydraulically boosted ailerons and what not and the wings slightly altered but the guns remained the same 6 50cal machine guns while they r powerful they don't have the knockdown power or range of the migs 37 and 20mm cannons

um the 50.cal has a further range an a faster rate of fire. and it also holds more ammo an shoots API rounds. the 37mm an 20mm are deadly but as seen in WW2 they means they have less ammo.

you do not need a lot of cannon rounds...bigger and heavier ammo packs a bigger punch than .50 cal..USA themselves admitted that cannons were more effective than machine guns....you do not need really far range for ammo since you gotta get in fairly close for a gun kill

I have read that at a far enough range the cannon shells from a mig would miss the target due to the difference in trajectory of the 37mm vs. the 20mm.

mmmmmm, I believe @ high speeds it was when it came to making turns using hydraulic assited controls vs. the Mig15's manual controls it was, but other than that the Mig15 was more manueverable.

The F86 was slightly more maneuverable than the MiG-15 but the MiG was faster and had a better climb rate... but the biggest factor was that our pilots were better trained.

Yes that's what I meant... thanks for adding that. Both our pilots and the Russian pilots were well trained (and many flew during WW2 so they had experience as well).
Also I'll add that the F86's full maneuvering tail surface was the biggest factor that gave the F86 better maneuverability over the MiG-15

Both aircrafts were equivalent except for few little characteristics. The most important part was the pilot. Remember what Chuck Yeager said: "It's the man, not the machine."

Yes the pilot was the greatest factor. However, you can't leave out the machine totally... the F86 had a few very important advantages over the MiG-15. Mainly the hydrolic controls that improved the pilot's control over the plane in tight maneuvering, and the electronic aiming sights that the F86 had. But those advantages mean nothing if the pilot isn't skilled enough to get the most out of the plane.

Yeah the MiG had a great climb rate, but the armament was a give-and-take. While the combination of 2x23mm cannons and the massive 37mm cannon gave the MiG superior firepower, they were slower firing than the F86's 6x.50cals. I believe that the cannons held fewer rounds too, but that's not much of a problem because fewer rounds are needed.

When F-86 was designed, US equiped it with the standard guns that gave excelent results in WW2 againts fighters, the 6x12,7mm. I would have done the same, if they were good, why a change?
The Fagot, by the way, was equiped as an interceptor. If US had known the existence of the MiG-15 they would have probably changed the armament like the versions H and K with 4x20mm cannons.

I totally agree, while they don't pack the same punch as cannons, the browning .50cals were still powerful, didn't overheat as fast, lighter, carried more ammo, and fired faster making them a very good choice at the time for a fighter that was designed for attacking other fighters.
That I also knew, the MiG-15bis was designed specifically for attacking and shooting down enemy bombers hence the extremely heavy armament. Like I said, both armament designs had both advantages and disadvantages.

if a 37mm punches into any part of the plane- say bye bye...if russian migs had lead computing gyro sights, they would of had greater results than the sabres because it takes just one or two rounds to shoot down a plane- unlike sabre 50-100(also depends where u hit)

yes. that's how the p-40s handled the much more agile zeros. zoom and boom. the technique developed by the flying tigers. they were warned, "never dogfight with a zero at all cost". it's the man flying the plane and the tactics involved. like the finger four formation by the germans and the thach weave by the u.s. naval aviators

Yes. It worked very well. When the cold war ended the Americans were astonished to see that they greatly overestimated Russian airpower. However, when you have nukes and missles to put them on, it really does not matter.

also what you still don't know is that the original dvd episodes have more scenes that you got from tv recording (i dont mean "behind the scenes" No, i mean more details inside the episode itself, more vivid graphic scenes like a scene of a pilot dead in his cockpit with blood stain on his window while the other american pilot is watching him from his plane in close formatio, so dont be so happy!
