The most beautiful steam engine ive ever seen. And that line of cars it was hauling were amazing (except that diesel, lol). I really wanna ride in the california zepher on top in the dining observation seats. that looks so cool!
Back then they got the power from the steam driven dynamo built in the train. when the train is standing still the steam that comes close from the cab is the dynamo! But back then the cars didn't use so much electricity so the dynamo could handle it. now days they use way more than the dynamo can provide. And the dynamo is mainly for the headlight.
Acually yes I do see a diesel it's located right behind the engines water tender (pause the video at 1:20 and that blue and silver thing is the diesel.) Also we're not in the 40s anymore, today the cars are powered by electricity, and to get that we either need a diesel or a power car for the train. And no I don't see lights, but that's because the lights are probablly on the inside roof of the car and were not showing the inside roof.
The only reason that all special runs have at LEAST one diesel behind them is because according the the Railroad Safety Admin. You MUST have at LEAST one locomotive with dynamic brakes on each train.
Thanks mate, Mars Lights used a variety of different means to cause the light to oscillate vertically, horizontally, or both, with the idea that it would catch the attention of motorists and pedestrians crossing the tracks.
To the railfans. She is quite capable of pulling her train and wouldn't be in use if the railroad didn't think she could finish the job. The Amtrak locomotive provides "head end power" for the rest of the train.
The question that always comes to my mind is, "what did they do before they had diesels?" Like when UP 1996 and 1983 both assisted UP 844 over Donner Pass a few months ago. Besides that they are heritage units, they said they were for dynamic braking. What did they do before diesels and dynamic breaking? I suppose they used a lot of air and hoped their train didn't get away from them. I guess this is why operating steam locomotives was so dangerous.
Im curious, what is that engine worth? And its beautiful!!

Accually it's the diesel that provides electricity for the cars. Also the cars don't use steam.

Let me put it this way...
DO YOU SEE A DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE?
DO YOU SEE LIGHTS?
WHERE THE HECK DO YOU THINK THEY GOT THE POWER FROM IN THE 40's? Sounds like an uneducated comment to me.

Even here in old third-world ex-colonial South Africa our steam locos themselves generated electricity; from about 1905 I have heard.

i was thinking that same thing but along with braking what about electricity to run lights and other things for the passenger cars.
