Ascoltate cosa sia la "brughiera armonica" e le atmosfere che sanno di nebbie ovattate, in una dimensione timbrica indefinibile !!! Non solo "veli" o "vele" !!! Incredibile !!!
I like this version, i think i prefer Gieseking too. Compare with Samson Francois' radically more 'romantic' reading, which is also effective in it's own right
It's too bad youtube wouldn't allow me to post the poem in its entirety...
There is no doubt in my mind Debussy had very highly-developed synesthesia, in his particular case between this wonderfully evocative poetry and music... (of course the most famous example being "L'apres midi d'un Faune")
Ah but what a gift it is to be able to dream aloud...
It's more like a simbolist. He was not trying to capture the "light" (or the sound in this case) but more like represent a number of situations based on symbols.

Listen at 1:54 ! Doesn't it seem exactly the beginning of Mussorgskij's Promenade? :)

Debussy was one of the great originals, and so was Michelangeli; a perfect combination!

It's as if Debussy really were from another planet.

His self-indulgence of sound is most appropriate for this one...I wish it never ended...

rather "Harmonie du Soir". Orientalism, dandyism but something more..

the title is an allusion to a famous poem of Baudelaire: "Correspondances" I think. about synesthesia.

Les Fleurs du Mal, Spleen et ideal, XVIII Harmonie du Soir
(first verse third line)
Voici venir les temps où vibrant sur sa tige
Chaque fleur s'évapore ainsi qu'un encensoir ;
Les sons et les parfums tournent dans l'air du soir ;
Valse mélancolique et langoureux vertige !
Chaque fleur s'évapore ainsi qu'un encensoir ;
Le violon frémit comme un coeur qu'on afflige ;
Valse mélancolique et langoureux vertige !
Le ciel est triste et beau comme un grand reposoir.

Thanks for that, in terms of Impressionists I'd prefer his material to Ravel's, but I'm afraid they're the only two I'm aware of hearing
clubsandwedge 4 years ago 2
Debussy would strongly resent you calling him an "Impressionist", Andy... ;)
Well, another wonderful composer somewhat in this Impressionistic vein is Erik Satie, and I heartily recommend you his music.

@EdiEllerymissing <3 Infact I prefear Gieseking
flic71 1 year ago
@flic71 Oh yeah? And that's because of the light or the symbolism? What does Gieseking has to do with the aestethics of Debussy? You're confused.

@EdiEllerymissing Gobbledegook. Sounds like you've been reading "The DaVinci Code" too much.

@TanaDrake ¿? Yeah, right... (you are what happens when you have nothing smart to say, jajajaja

Why should Debussy rotate in his grave if s.o. calls him Impressionist. Maybe he was tired of classifieing his style ?
You re a connesseur of Satie ? I like the GNOSSIENNE No. 4 ....
