  • Yeah! Reminds me of the time that I was on the Yard. Pure ole school sound. Yeah!

  • them mellos have hit a nice nerve in me!!

  • @blakjustice30 get at me on facebook... Rico Suave´ Daniel. Shannon Haynes, Louis Broadway, etc. are on my page! JUKE 4 LIFE!

  • Hmmmm... This is the 1st time I've heard SU's version of this tune. I think it was VERY smart and creative to use the trombone line for the melody, they sound remarkably like her actual voice! I must respectfully say however, that I'm biased towards the 100's overall arrangement (I'm 100 alumni), but this sounds good!! I give all props to the 80's era HBCU's!! Bro'man Fall 93, FAMU100

  • @broman9tre ...those are btones with the melody, bruh. They lined up in the front for a showcase....*thumbs up*

  • another joint that left me no choice but to join the evil empire !!! Eddiebo fall89 Tower of power SU bAABY!!!

  • Some of you old school guys kill me, it's one thing to have pride in the years that you march in the band but that doesn't mean that you should denigrate everything that came after you! Yes, SU isn't what it should be but compared tomost other bands they are still head and shoulders better than everybody else. Try showing some love every now and then to those marching in the S now and leave the hate to the other schools. SU Tower of Power '89 - '92

  • @cwpaul thank you......I hate when alumni/old schoolers from any organization do dat

  • Old school Jags.... gotta luv it .....

  • This is the tremedous sound most bands are missing today. The last of the old school.

    "Gumby Dam It!!! Fall 1986

    192 on the field.

  • damn....

  • See this is the Jukebox that gained more respect. These guys actually focus on musicianship as well as volume. They also challenged themselves (Listen to SU playing Get Away. Some sic runs in there! lol) Just wished they went back to that.

  • @7thSwell no we didn't,,,we jus blew and that's the way it came out

  • Funny - by "new school" standards, this would be considered soft, weak, boring and lame. This is the Jukebox sound I grew up listening to, and I truly miss it.

  • not by any means ! the majority of our generation still appreciates this music ! it sounds wonderful !

  • Listen to those tbones. I remember first seeing SU in 1985 and their thick tbone sound blew me away. Clean and powerful.

  • You never hear bands play this good anymore, Listining to this damn near make me cry

  • Well NSU's arrangement is written by a SU grad Paul Adams. I can hear slight differences but I wouldnt be surprised if he did. He does dat alot!

  • this is almost the same arrangement that nsu plays.

  • Anyone remember a song called Gold Mine,

  • Yeah, that's it! The best way to put it. Some like one style of play, some like the other. I happen to like both.

  • I dont say this alot but that was F**kin awesome!

    Who arranged this?

  • No even a fan of SU but damn they sound good on here boi you might not like SU but a true HBCU band head has to respect them and that i do

  • this 86' b-tone section was the best ever!!! the section leaders were those boys out of houston,tx frm forest brook. they introduced playing b-tone with a jazz-feel. this clip was just a tease for what they brought to the table!!! I don't know if b-tone sections even listen to jazz now!!!

  • For jaro1911, my crab yr was 1992 and Doc told us that we were the best predominantly crab class that he's ever directed. Much love to the 1's before me. Griffin'92. What up Stefon,Chris, Sheldon, Rico, Snoop, Tyrus, etc... Griffin represented

  • Yall came in under me, 92 was a good year.

    Spook-91-Tuba

  • sorry but Famu arrangement is so much better

  • Yeah, FAMU generally plays ballads a little sweeter. I'll say it this way, depending on the mood I'm in, there are some songs I prefer to hear FAMU play, and some I prefer to hear Southern play (it's sort of like sex, sometime I want to make love, and sometime I want to just F#@*%K).

  • I remember this. The Answer to FAMU on their Sweet Love

  • Is that the black man on the podium?

  • yep, that's doc greggs. my dad played for him 83-86

  • classic footage, like my crab bro louis said you can grab a gal and tell that hoe lets dance bitch. Fuck FAMU

  • mud makes the difference,su will never be the same

  • It was ok. But FAMU takes this one!! MARCHING 100 all the way!! No Offense!!

  • hubba HELL NO! This was in Shreveport Fall 86. I was there. The Juke hands down!

  • who won the game

  • Nice performance nevertheless, FAMU arrangement is much sweeter.

  • you could actually grab a chick and dance in the aisle if you wanted to. FAM's arrangement dont have that same kinda feel. both bands sound good but SOUTHERN is just cold.

  • I always liked fam's arrangement, but I gotta say partna this version is on FIRE! Oh and Patti Labelle, like SU, is loved by many loyal followers! don't hate!

  • This version is to loud and does not represent how Anita baker sings. This ishow Patti Labelle would sing

  • My Crab Year! T Phi T. The E Man. MUD makes the difference....

  • it's not blue & gold it's gold & blue

  • Love this arrangement.. FAMU's is too slow and boring. Southern brought that certain funkiness to the song that I just love.

I know this video is over 20 years old, but FAMU continues to play the same way even to this very day, and I mean, that's fine and all because they sound good, but it's marching band.. put some funk into it.. the arrangement is too damn dry, boring, and 'pretty'.

Anyway, great job as usual SU, I hope to hear this in person later this year at the MEAC/SWAC challenge.

  • Same here. Even though I've attended SU and FAM...I still bleed blue and gold! Will be at the SWAC MEAC CHallenge.

  • All I can say is damn :^0

  • the best, its amazing the longevity this program has

  • Chris from the Tuba section (1984-1987) looking for bill (dust bucket) donkey kong, Mirrec (james brown)Pitman, Hickman, etc. Find these guys

  • would you by any chance be "Duke".

  • This is MY crab year. T - Phi - T ! No better tuba section in the world, even till today.

    Leon Barber

    "E-Man"

    Fall 1986

    The Human Jukebox!

    "Knuttz"

  • SU was kind of deep back then...they sound great as always!

  • yea juke sound good

  • Who ever said fam was jay z and the juke was some dem franchise boys needs to shut their duMass up!

It is the S on our chest that makes us the best! I'd love to hear the Juke play this in 2007 when we play shamU at the SWAC/mewac challenge in B'Ham.

  • i believe that would be the f horns hittin that b flat or e flat for them

  • is that the 1st bone killin them b flats or is that the f-horns?

  • Look at my Baritones in the front!!! Makes me proud I'm one. Baritones don't have many oppurtunities like this to be in charge!!

    B4L~FreakNasty~c/o08!!!

  • wow!!!

  • Musically...this is one of SU's best arrangements. I heard famu play this and all I can say is that S made Sweet Love sound the best.

  • famu stop hazing your music is terrible and boring so stop hatin on su!

  • lol...I heard both...being an alumnus of FAMU and I bleed Orange and GREEN...I must say both have distinct styles, but for the size su has, their arrangement really doubles the size of the band.

hey jukies, ya better bring it in Birmingham.

  • Dude...ya'll better bring it! And from your own admission, this sounds better than the 100(plus 400).

  • Look SU, famu even changed keys in their performance, yall are just loud, why can't yall admit that. I'll admit yall are loud, but yall had to slow the tempo down just to play the song, and some of yall are drowning out other sections, yall are an embarrasment to actual "skill" SWAC really needs to leave the booty shaking to others, and really get some skill behind them. I'm sorry if you truly know music, you would know this arrangement, musically is terrible.

  • I guess you 'told SU', huh?

    Man, sit'cho arse down somewhere...lol.

    "S"

  • Man...this is on point! I remember playing in the LAB band seeing this as was like OMG!!

  • is this clip from FAMU vs SU '86 in mumford??? i agree tphi the baritones make this song 'sweet love' lol. the best i've heard SU on a ballad!

  • i guess its jus me but them b-tones are sweet as hell. there will never be a greater sound than SU.

  • I feel ya frat ZN.

  • jaro i heard about them thrashings we put on fam in the 90's. they'll never admit it.they just say we out of tune, and we play so angry and all that shit. like we supposed to sound like them or something.-Crab 2000-S Phi D KKPsi spr '03 ZN.

  • What happend to FAMU in spr.'86(after fall'85 season)at Fulton County Stadium in Atlanta during the SWAC all-star game(friendly question)? Just curious.

  • Try it again. There is nothin like that Southern "sound" from back then until now. Nothin like them 80's bands. I had homeboys in this band. I feel like '90,'91,'92,and'93 were the residue of them 80's bands. Tried to uphold that Southern tradition(you would have to have been in SU band to understand). What happend to FAMU at their homecoming in fall'93 from cross the field? Crab fall'92--mellow madness---KKPsi spr.'93 ZN.

  • Boy! If I could get my hands on everything lost in the walls and halls of Jones Hall....lmao

    "S"

  • thats the show ive been looking for with 24 bass horns on the field....one of my crab brothers stole this tape when i was in jones!

  • that drum beat is off the chain! Real funky! When they pulled it out in 97, the beat was nothing like that.

  • this aint got nothin on Famu version!

  • famu version is weak so don't hate on because southern is the number 1 band!

  • even u know that statement about southern being the best aint true. southern is the best at pushin they slides all the way in, overblasting, and playing without concept. southern is like Dem Franchise Boys, FAMU is like Jay-Z, best rapper alive, Dem Franchise Boys...well their just simple and popular. When a swac band develops a Dynamic sound, such as the one that the Marching "100" has, then i'll rate them next to Famu, not yet tho

  • please famu is like jayz please! southern is like 2pac the legeacy will be there forever ! tell famu to stop hazing and stealing from hotels! every poll says su is the number 1 band so stop hatin on southern famu is boring! 2pac is the best ever and he is dead and his ablums are number 1 and he is dead@ southern is like james brown @ louis armstrong! don't hate on su because they are number 1 and not boring!

  • famu being jayz please!southern is like 2 pac the leagcy will be there forever! 2 pac is died and he stil have number1 ablums! tell famu to stop hazing and stealing out the marriot! don't get mad because southern always win the battle out of your boring school!southern is like james brown and louis armstrong! another jukebox hater! don't get mad because southern was voted number 1 on band polls! southern university number 1 band! your band sounds like crap! keep the comments coming!

  • i need not respond...ur iggnorrance contradicts facts and makes u look stupid enuff...as for me,in my house...The Marching "100" will continue to be the standard of excellence!

  • tell your school to stop hazing and stealing out of hotels!

  • Tell your band to play in tune and maybe their sound will actually make it across the field...

  • i enjoy the hazing case on court tv! our sound always make it across the field! southern can do a halftime score famu can't ! thats what makes southern the number 1 band! our band is powerful and clean! famu is boring! don't hate on su!

  • the hazing case was against kappa alpha psi...which has nothing to do with the famu band...i would advise u to get ur facts straight, as far as u thinkin southern is the best, go ahead. im not gonna argue w/you, i dont have time... The Marching "100" has some rehersals to do in preparation for the Superbowl halftime show...Whats southern doing?...lol

  • don't forget tell famu don't steal out of hotels! southern did that superbowl anyway!

  • also, please forgive me for talking to you like an adult. i had no idea u were a 13 year old kid. again...i apologize.

  • i got on your case get this famu is boring! make show to practice on your sound because famu sounds like GSU!
