Hey I have chrome 20inch wheel. And I wanted to know what kind of sand paper to use to sand the rim. And do I have to sand off ALL the chrome off the rim?
P.S. My wheel are just like yours the chrome is peeling.
I've watched this video quite a few times. I'm going to paint mine when I'm ready for my new tires. I can get the duplicolor here, and want to paint my alloy wheels. Was your "base" coat the GRAPHITE color, and two silver? I am like you, the Graphite i see on the shelf looks a bit dark, where the silver looks a bit light.
My wheels currently have a clear over them, do i just need to rough that up then use the etching primer?
Looks like you did a damn good job. Quick question about painting the back of the wheel, is there any reason why shooting the paint through the opposite side of the wheel is gonna cause problems?
Can you please send me a list of every single thing i need, I have the exact same wheels and i wanted to rebuild them and how much will it cost. Thanks
ive tried paining my rims twice and it keeps coming out sandy and cakey.. What am I doing wrong? my current rims are factory alloy or aluminum. do i need to strip all the old paint off then sand, prime, n paint? or can I just sand n prime then paint?
are these wheel made of aluminum??? if it is what kind of aluminum such as forged aluminum..and ect.. Please let me know!! Cause I have a set of bbs rc and I want to paint them. Thanks in advance!!
btw would you recommend this if I were to paint my whole car with it? Teal is the paint. Honestly I'm cheap and after watching this video, your rims turned out looking like spray gun painted as I mentioned earlier. Would you recommend it if I were to paint my car the same way?
@AutoHowTV BBS wheels are powder coated ALL the time with no ill effects. Most powders cure at 350 to 400 degrees for 15 to 20 mins. A forged wheel at 350 for 15 mins will not have any ill affect on a forged Alum. wheel.... As for air bubbles, a good powder coater knows how to alleviate that during the prep process.
@islandminisunlimited correct. if they are in good shape you just need to sand them to give the paint something to stick to. Primer helps but it's not required.
So I picked up some second hand wheels for my car. 2 of the wheels are in decent shape tot he point where I could just mount em, but the other 2 are terrible and I need to definitely refinish them. I want to keep a silver look, but I'll be sanding all of them down anyways.
So my question is if I just sand them down, they're ready for paint? No primer needed? What sand paper should I use? Thanks a lot!
@HyeWarrior Some 320 grit should be fine. No primer needed but it doesn't hurt and will help the paint stick. It is highly unlikely the 2 painted rims will match so I am assuming you plan to do all 4 at once.
Follow-up. I got mine off of a Panoz. Still have the carbon-fiber look center caps, though I run the BBS center caps instead. Lighter than my stock 16's and super-strong. They've been on the car for several years now. I've picked up some road rash on all of them over the years and the shiny silver is a little of faded now. I don't know if I want to paint them with this wheel paint or send them off to be powder coated black. I want a gun-metal look but I haven't seen the paint just yet.
@mlc7boosted Love those RKs! I thought about powder coating but that's a little iffy on aluminum wheels (so I've heard). The high heat can stress the forged aluminum or something. You may want to double check or even call BBS.
@skinnyg190 having that rough texture from the very beginning kept it from being as smooth as it could have been. If the starting surface is perfect and smooth they will turn out great.
@stephenmsanchez005 It's been a few years...it held up much better than I thought! But I will be repainting them in the next few weeks. I did another set of rims for the S2000 with just 2 coats and those are chipping fast--that's what I get for rushing but I only had a few hours of warm enough temps back in March. Rushing definitely shows!
@jtbiz88 it's called media blasting. as in they spray little plastic pellets (media) at them. Similar to sandblasting. This did rough up the surface a bit though...aluminum is a soft metal :(
Serious question for you? Was the cost of material and doing it yourself cheaper and better than saying going down to the local powder coating shop? Don't get me wrong, you did damn good, it just seems like powder coating would have a better life span out of it. Great work, and great instructional video.
i have a jeep cherokee 1995 the stock alloys are going all crappy and kinda pealing how would i go about restoring them thay have a lot more spokes then yours did
This may be a stupid question, but would this work for a dirt bike? I think with all the dirt and mud getting caked on it might mess it up but I'm not sure. Any reply is much appreciated!
Great how to video. Also, if you liked the chrome look, you could also send them out to get spray chromed too. I was skeptical of the spray chrome process at first, but after seeing some examples at SEMA the last couple years, I am a believer now.
Great video! quick question though, If i just wanted to paint my rims black without sand blasting what all would I need to buy? also, how can i repair curb rash?
Excellent guide! I have a question. If my current wheels are powder coated from the factory I know that in order to strip them down to metal they must be sanded or dipped in an acid bath. Would it still hold up fine if I used your method and sanded down to the primer (or original coat) and then went over it with filler/self etching primer?
so,, i have sum black chrome fr500 on my 02 mustang gt, after a year n a half the chrome started to chip of jst a lil si i decided to sand it down ,, know they are flat black,, my question is do i have to use both d self-etching primer and d the filler primer since im not sand blasting them?? what should i use?? thank u for ur help
@MrSanQuentin703 yeah, those rims are a waste on that car. I don't even know who buys Mustangs. I mean they've only been in non stop production 45+ years. In all seriousness, it's best to keep an open mind--I love all types of cars. My other car is an S2000 and it was a 350Z before that. For all it's faults I still love my faithful Mustang because it is cheap, RWD, V8 fun. Those wheels were made (literally) for it and I love the look :)
sweet video! Can you do mine? haha jk. I did my jeep grand with a gunmetal dupli-color and they came out awesome! with 4 hours of sanding... 1 year with 1 heavy coat. i 4wheel like crazy rocks hit and no noticeable scratches!
@NorkiddExo just keep the distance from the object you are painting at about 5-6 inches and go at a steady paste and dont do heavy coats cuz itll run. thats about it lol
Do you have any pictures of the wheels in daylight? I always thought the duplicolor silver was too bright and the graphite was too dark. I'm very interested in using the same process on some of my wheels depending on how it looks in sunlight. Any chipping/peeling on these?
One thing coming from somebody who works with a lot of spray paint - A mask wont do anything, you need an organic filter gas mask - the mask you have is made purely to keep out dust/particles, the fumes from spray paint (xylene, etc.) go right through it
UPDATE: After about 3 years of these year round I am pretty pleased. Not bad for spray paint! I will be switching back to my winter wheels finally. I may sand these down and refinish using the stock "Argent" (dark silver) color and duplicolor clear. We'll see...
@madugui it's been a while...full parts list is on my site. I think it was between 40-50 bucks because I was experimenting with different cans of primer paint. You could pull this off for less. The duplicolor is like $5/can
what media was used to strip your wheels? I'm aircraft stripping my HP Evos now and it sucks. I have access to a friends blaster but I need to provide media and a nozzle.
do you know by any chance what media they used to blast your rims? I'm doing my HP Evo lightnings and stripping them with chemical sucks. I now have access to a media blaster but need to provide the media
Can you do this on dodge ram wheels? The clear coat and chrome are chipping off and I wanted to refinish them. I have the bubble style wheels the rams come with.
what do you do if your wheels are chrome or think they are chrome? Do you sand blast them or sand by hand? I have some scratched wheels that are chrome or at least i think they are, that are pretty bad, so i was just wondering how to repaint them silver. Please respond
Great video, your wheels came out awesome! I just bought some stock '02 WRX wheels for my winter setup on my '03 WRX wagon, and will use your video for guidance. The only thing I'm curious about is how many coats of Dupli-Color Wheel Paint to use; I'm only going to be painting the face of the wheel and around the sides of the lip where the wheel and tire meet (if that makes sense.) Any advice for how many coats to go with, and how long to wait between coats?
I really like the color that came out on these wheels, I have a set of matte black rx8 wheels which I am looking to paint, but I'm still not sure what color would match best with a white car, gunmetal or hyperblack.
Killer vid! I'm working on restoring a set of Rota's to put on my new WRX. Because of time constraints, I used Aircraft Stripper to get the wheels down to the bare aluminum. This is relatively easy with a couple of coats... starting on the rest this weekend! Thanks for the tips!!
Do you recommend wet sanding after the clear coat dries?

what do you do if your wheels are chrome or think they are chrome?

Has anyone ever tried spraying 2 light coats of graphite and 2 light coats of black? I'm curious as to see how that would look.
