  • Do you recommend wet sanding after the clear coat dries?

  • I dontt really like mustangs but yours look nice

  • Great video! Thanks for taking the time to explain everything so thoroughly and clearly and getting it all shot on video. Youda MAN!

  • Hey I have chrome 20inch wheel. And I wanted to know what kind of sand paper to use to sand the rim. And do I have to sand off ALL the chrome off the rim?

P.S. My wheel are just like yours the chrome is peeling.

  • Brilliant Bro!

  • I've watched this video quite a few times. I'm going to paint mine when I'm ready for my new tires. I can get the duplicolor here, and want to paint my alloy wheels. Was your "base" coat the GRAPHITE color, and two silver? I am like you, the Graphite i see on the shelf looks a bit dark, where the silver looks a bit light.

My wheels currently have a clear over them, do i just need to rough that up then use the etching primer?

    Thanks for the great vid.

  • nice rims to bad there on a crapstang

  • great vid bro! favorited

  • Excellent video

  • eye protection? Gloves? Mask? WTF are those things!

  • really good video dude

  • hey do you think there's any chance of repainting some 6 years old oem volkswagen rims without ruinig the look?

  • Beautiful. Thanks!

  • Index cards...Why didn't i think of that.

  • Looks like you did a damn good job. Quick question about painting the back of the wheel, is there any reason why shooting the paint through the opposite side of the wheel is gonna cause problems?

  • Im painting my chrome rims now. Hit me up for photos, prep work, cost, etc.

  • So, you posted this video in 2008. Its 3 years now. How is it doin' now?

  • You sold the Z?! D:

I was enjoying the DIY on the Z lol

  • Wow! Great walkthrough video. It really helps when getting ready to do your own rims.

  • very nice..i'll be using this guide shortly to re-finish my set.

  • even showed a follow up shot... nice touch! great how to video! thanks

  • Very nice job

  • Can you please send me a list of every single thing i need, I have the exact same wheels and i wanted to rebuild them and how much will it cost. Thanks

  • a pretty long valve :(

  • Your transitions are awesome!!

  • I like how these turned out. So you bought duplicolor silver but how did you make it darker?

  • do you mean ordered tires, wheels are the metal things lol

  • awesome!

  • fake bbs lol

  • Thanks to your video I decided to try refinishing the wheels on my NSX - they came out great! Many thanks!!!

  • Wow great job!

  • how much did all this cost???

  • what kind of sand paper do you use ?

  • I feel like im watching the truman show with all these ads

  • Well done. However next time...film in daylight! It was impossible to see and appreciate the colour.

  • how much did the whole project cost? including getting it sanded?

  • ive tried paining my rims twice and it keeps coming out sandy and cakey.. What am I doing wrong? my current rims are factory alloy or aluminum. do i need to strip all the old paint off then sand, prime, n paint? or can I just sand n prime then paint?

  • are these wheel made of aluminum??? if it is what kind of aluminum such as forged aluminum..and ect.. Please let me know!! Cause I have a set of bbs rc and I want to paint them. Thanks in advance!!

  • I like the color but I want it a little bit darker , so which color should I paint first or after? Thanks

  • btw would you recommend this if I were to paint my whole car with it? Teal is the paint. Honestly I'm cheap and after watching this video, your rims turned out looking like spray gun painted as I mentioned earlier. Would you recommend it if I were to paint my car the same way?

  • That's amazing. I did not expect it to look like that...so pro. It looks like it's been painted with spray gun not rattle cans. Great job!

  • Amazing

  • did two cans cover all the wheels? if so how many coats were you able to get?

  • @richardbongatmolina1 I'd go with 3 just to be safe. Should get 3-4 coats.

  • Why not powdercoat them so you have more time to run 13's

  • @shortstop12088 too pricey of a wheel to risk forged aluminum melting/air bubble issues in the baking phase of the powdercoating process.

  • @AutoHowTV BBS wheels are powder coated ALL the time with no ill effects. Most powders cure at 350 to 400 degrees for 15 to 20 mins. A forged wheel at 350 for 15 mins will not have any ill affect on a forged Alum. wheel.... As for air bubbles, a good powder coater knows how to alleviate that during the prep process.

  • So you say, if its oem wheels no primer needed? Thanks

  • @islandminisunlimited correct. if they are in good shape you just need to sand them to give the paint something to stick to. Primer helps but it's not required.

  • i have the same mustang but i have black rims and the car has black racing stripes

  • So I picked up some second hand wheels for my car. 2 of the wheels are in decent shape tot he point where I could just mount em, but the other 2 are terrible and I need to definitely refinish them. I want to keep a silver look, but I'll be sanding all of them down anyways.

So my question is if I just sand them down, they're ready for paint? No primer needed? What sand paper should I use? Thanks a lot!

  • @HyeWarrior Some 320 grit should be fine. No primer needed but it doesn't hurt and will help the paint stick. It is highly unlikely the 2 painted rims will match so I am assuming you plan to do all 4 at once.

  • Follow-up. I got mine off of a Panoz. Still have the carbon-fiber look center caps, though I run the BBS center caps instead. Lighter than my stock 16's and super-strong. They've been on the car for several years now. I've picked up some road rash on all of them over the years and the shiny silver is a little of faded now. I don't know if I want to paint them with this wheel paint or send them off to be powder coated black. I want a gun-metal look but I haven't seen the paint just yet.

  • @mlc7boosted Love those RKs! I thought about powder coating but that's a little iffy on aluminum wheels (so I've heard). The high heat can stress the forged aluminum or something. You may want to double check or even call BBS.

  • Funny that I'm looking to paint my rims and low and behold this vid is about the same rims I run. BBS Rk's. Good info. Here I go to do mine. Later!

  • How did the clear coat look in person without having been wet sanded and polished? Was it still pretty smooth?

  • @skinnyg190 having that rough texture from the very beginning kept it from being as smooth as it could have been. If the starting surface is perfect and smooth they will turn out great.

  • Very nice job!!

  • i wonder if this paint still looks good

  • @stephenmsanchez005 It's been a few years...it held up much better than I thought! But I will be repainting them in the next few weeks. I did another set of rims for the S2000 with just 2 coats and those are chipping fast--that's what I get for rushing but I only had a few hours of warm enough temps back in March. Rushing definitely shows!

  • Nice bro this video is Kool how did you strip them down

  • @jtbiz88 it's called media blasting. as in they spray little plastic pellets (media) at them. Similar to sandblasting. This did rough up the surface a bit though...aluminum is a soft metal :(

  • RKs are fucking sweet.

  • GREAT JOB.... I wish there were more uploads like yours on youtube.

  • mustang looks sick, paint ur calipers next

  • love the tutorial, but i personally would have picked black rims for a your car :) nice vid !

  • @whiteraider you have good taste! I currently have the black bullits on (with cold weather tires).

  • @AutoHowTV nice one man, i'd love to see that.

  • @AutoHowTV where did you buy the black bullits from?

  • @MrSekula from a local person on one of the mustang forums like stangnet. That was before craigslist took off so that may be a better option now.

  • You did an awesome job with this video bro!! Good for you!!

  • nice :D

  • ClubRsx Ftw

  • Of fuck I almost think that in the first seconds of movie it was a charlie sheen.

  • @Mercedes600SEL Holy shit I thought the same thing hahaha

  • I have a 350z wheels i already sand it, can i use only filler primer then the color coat and clear?

  • too bad those rims have been wasted on a piece of shit mustang

  • you forgot to say make sure the wind is blowing on nextdoors car so no paint is wasted

  • What grit sandpaper would you use for sanding the stock, painted rim? thanks

  • Serious question for you? Was the cost of material and doing it yourself cheaper and better than saying going down to the local powder coating shop? Don't get me wrong, you did damn good, it just seems like powder coating would have a better life span out of it. Great work, and great instructional video.

  • quck question. if im painting a stock wheel.what grit sandpaper would i sand with to remove the clear coat before i shoot it with my paint.?

  • This video answered all my questions. Thanks for covering all your bases

  • I have black aluminum rims, is there anyway to strip the black off and repaint it....

  • I hate mustangs with a passion...but they came out great...and actually fit that car well...black would have looked great too.

  • i loved your tutorioral u made it with good examples and voice audio unlike the other worthless mofos on here

  • Dude that looks fucking amazing for a can job! Very well done!!

  • i have a jeep cherokee 1995 the stock alloys are going all crappy and kinda pealing how would i go about restoring them thay have a lot more spokes then yours did

  • This may be a stupid question, but would this work for a dirt bike? I think with all the dirt and mud getting caked on it might mess it up but I'm not sure. Any reply is much appreciated!

  • Great how to video. Also, if you liked the chrome look, you could also send them out to get spray chromed too. I was skeptical of the spray chrome process at first, but after seeing some examples at SEMA the last couple years, I am a believer now.

  • From the lehigh valley? 610 area code...

  • Great video! quick question though, If i just wanted to paint my rims black without sand blasting what all would I need to buy? also, how can i repair curb rash?

  • Excellent guide! I have a question. If my current wheels are powder coated from the factory I know that in order to strip them down to metal they must be sanded or dipped in an acid bath. Would it still hold up fine if I used your method and sanded down to the primer (or original coat) and then went over it with filler/self etching primer?

  • wat color was that?

  • What if my tires are already painted and i want to repaint?

should i take off the paint, primer then repaint?

or should i just sand then repaint?

  • @essteben You have to remove the previous paint before repainting otherwise your 2nd coat of paint could chip easily.

  • @jhoags92 Thanks, ill post a response to show the results :)

  • so,, i have sum black chrome fr500 on my 02 mustang gt, after a year n a half the chrome started to chip of jst a lil si i decided to sand it down ,, know they are flat black,, my question is do i have to use both d self-etching primer and d the filler primer since im not sand blasting them?? what should i use?? thank u for ur help

  • @dirtydekz gracias!

  • 1:19-1:20 that sound is like nails to a chalkboard for me. poor wheels

  • Would you want to strip the previous clear coat on an OEM wheel before sanding? I want to try to refinished my stock wheels

    Thanks

  • @GOMBPRODUXIONS In most cases scuffing them with the 320 grit sandpaper is sufficient for this type of quick paint job.

  • @AutoHowTV Thanks for the quick response, I think I might try the aircraft stripper just because my clearcoat now is so bad

  • @AutoHowTV Btw it's an AP1 ;-P

  • @GOMBPRODUXIONS nice! send me some pics of the S2000 when you are done.

  • @AutoHowTV Alright, I'm sure you get on s2ki. My screenname is j2damilla and I'll definately post some when I'm finished.

  • started getting tacky towards the end why didn't u just wait for another day lol

  • @MrSanQuentin703 yeah, those rims are a waste on that car. I don't even know who buys Mustangs. I mean they've only been in non stop production 45+ years. In all seriousness, it's best to keep an open mind--I love all types of cars. My other car is an S2000 and it was a 350Z before that. For all it's faults I still love my faithful Mustang because it is cheap, RWD, V8 fun. Those wheels were made (literally) for it and I love the look :)

  • @AutoHowTV you are right but they look like the same rims on some of the lexus and toyota camry models my friend.

  • @AutoHowTV those are german wheels... on a american car... so I highly doubt they where made for them...

  • So uhhh, there should be cardboard on the floor.....you're scratching your "new" wheels.

  • This is a really great video!

  • sweet video! Can you do mine? haha jk. I did my jeep grand with a gunmetal dupli-color and they came out awesome! with 4 hours of sanding... 1 year with 1 heavy coat. i 4wheel like crazy rocks hit and no noticeable scratches!

  • dust mask wont do shit aganist paint

  • you might want to add that if you put on too much of the acid spray you will get a chemical reaction. which is bad

  • How do you get such an even coat? Don't just say technique, tell me how.

  • @NorkiddExo just keep the distance from the object you are painting at about 5-6 inches and go at a steady paste and dont do heavy coats cuz itll run. thats about it lol

  • Comment removed

  • Do you have any pictures of the wheels in daylight? I always thought the duplicolor silver was too bright and the graphite was too dark. I'm very interested in using the same process on some of my wheels depending on how it looks in sunlight. Any chipping/peeling on these?

  • I have aftermarket clear coated machined rims. Can I just paint a few coats of black over these or do I have to sand them??

  • good video dude ! am going to try this on my BMW oem rims !!

  • One thing coming from somebody who works with a lot of spray paint - A mask wont do anything, you need an organic filter gas mask - the mask you have is made purely to keep out dust/particles, the fumes from spray paint (xylene, etc.) go right through it

  • sooo is this guy tryin to make this 100 paint job

  • did you really need 2 cans of each color? would you say 1 can per wheel then?

  • How much does it cost all together?

  • UPDATE: After about 3 years of these year round I am pretty pleased. Not bad for spray paint! I will be switching back to my winter wheels finally. I may sand these down and refinish using the stock "Argent" (dark silver) color and duplicolor clear. We'll see...

  • after finishing with the first coating how long do i have to wait for the second coating ?

  • @AutoHowTV well made video. Ill probably do this for my rims O.o

  • @AutoHowTV you can also sand down between coats to get the smoother finish with a 650-1000 grit sand paper.

  • @AutoHowTV around how much did u spend on all the products???

  • @madugui it's been a while...full parts list is on my site. I think it was between 40-50 bucks because I was experimenting with different cans of primer paint. You could pull this off for less. The duplicolor is like $5/can

  • this is dedication :P

  • Solid camera work, info and great job on those wheels. They look off yhe chain!

  • interesting!

i had that very same shop mount my volk ce28 wheels for my evo!! the owner is a great person

  • nice! jst the color i was looking for!

  • i want black rims so i would only have tosand, wash, prime and paint right???

  • fake bbs wheels? lol

how would the paint chip off bbs rims... itsl iek the best wheel on the market lol

  • what media was used to strip your wheels? I'm aircraft stripping my HP Evos now and it sucks. I have access to a friends blaster but I need to provide media and a nozzle.

    Thanks

  • do you know by any chance what media they used to blast your rims? I'm doing my HP Evo lightnings and stripping them with chemical sucks. I now have access to a media blaster but need to provide the media

    Thanks

  • AWESOME video man, great job, thank you.

  • Can you do this on dodge ram wheels? The clear coat and chrome are chipping off and I wanted to refinish them. I have the bubble style wheels the rams come with.

  • how much did it cost for materials ?

  • good job and great step by step hands on information well respected in my book and way to do it right

  • very nice video. thx man

  • nicely done video!!! excellent job!! :)

  • paint was great the clear coat was crappy it turned yellow unless i did something wrong.

  • what do you do if your wheels are chrome or think they are chrome? Do you sand blast them or sand by hand? I have some scratched wheels that are chrome or at least i think they are, that are pretty bad, so i was just wondering how to repaint them silver. Please respond

  • Great video, your wheels came out awesome! I just bought some stock '02 WRX wheels for my winter setup on my '03 WRX wagon, and will use your video for guidance. The only thing I'm curious about is how many coats of Dupli-Color Wheel Paint to use; I'm only going to be painting the face of the wheel and around the sides of the lip where the wheel and tire meet (if that makes sense.) Any advice for how many coats to go with, and how long to wait between coats?

  • Great video! Great commentator voice too!

  • Thanks for the comments @AliGhanizad and @ZooBerryNj.

Makes all the work worth it. The AutoHowTV machine is back up and running with more videos coming soon!

  • awesome video. Really good editing, awesome infor. cant say it in words.

  • Badass Video

  • Has anyone ever tried spraying 2 light coats of graphite and 2 light coats of black? I'm curious as to see how that would look.

  • I really like the color that came out on these wheels, I have a set of matte black rx8 wheels which I am looking to paint, but I'm still not sure what color would match best with a white car, gunmetal or hyperblack.

  • nice job man... 10 stars.

  • get those bbs centercaps back on those beautiful rk's!

  • was totally thinkin on doing my wheels this vid will def help thanks =)

  • i liked this video

  • Awesome video. I may be painting mine soon. thanks.

  • Very nice job dude!

  • Yea the three people who disliked this was brain dead. Amazing, to-the-point and informative video, just what I needed! Thanks AHTV!

  • hey i have stock rims, do i just sand them, paint them black and put a clear coat?, if so can you recommed me some products?, thank you.

  • hey i have new stock rims. do i just sand them then paint them black and put a clear coat on it? i need help plz

  • Killer vid! I'm working on restoring a set of Rota's to put on my new WRX. Because of time constraints, I used Aircraft Stripper to get the wheels down to the bare aluminum. This is relatively easy with a couple of coats... starting on the rest this weekend! Thanks for the tips!!

  • that a bad ass video and nice rims, howmuch did it cost to get it media blasted.

  • GREAT VIDEO!

  • bought brand new tires i see

  • great video!

  • 3 dislikes? makes no sense hmm.. awesome job the wheels looked great

  • pro job done at home.

  • hey, question. if i have new wheels, do i have to sand or sand blast it? or can i just do the primer over it?
