I can't figure out how this translates to the side thumb. Please help! Doesn't the working yarn end up in the middle of the stitches I'm supposed to set aside?
@moozik30 Once you finished increasing for the thumb, you knit to the marker - don't knit into the increase section. Thread some scrap yarn through those stitches that are in between your markers, create to stitches, and then join your work by continuing to knit into the stitches that came after the second marker.
@MsCurious1982 Since everyone's hands are differently sized, you can just keep doing your increase & knit rounds until the thumb gusset reaches the base of your thumb.
Thank you so much for tutorials, I have been knitting a long time but only recently started making socks and mittens. I followed along with afterthought thumb mitten and it turned out great! I an now trying the gusset thumb and I am having trouble with the increasing, I know how it`s done but I have large holes where I made the dc. I have tried other methods and still end up with holes, your mitten is so perfect, mine looks nothing like it, what am I doing wrong? Thanks.
@wallnett Hi- You mentioned getting large holes where you made the dc, did you mean increase instead? Also, depending on what kind of increase you use, some are a bit more "holey" than others. The best increase to use without creating somewhat of a hole is the make 1 increase (m1). You can find a written tutorial of this on the Knit Picks site, simply type "make 1" in the search box at the top of the site and the tutorial for that will show up. Let me know if this increase helps :)
I LOVE YOU! I have been using a knitting book from the 60s for mitten pattern, and today I was completely stuck on the thumb part. I ended up knitting it completely flat, and the entire project was compensated. You've saved my life! Thank you so much; this was wonderful!
i absolutely LOVE this video! you are so informative and clear with your instructions! you have by far one of the best videos i've seen for knitting! thank you so much for sharing and helping me!

@knitpicks But isn't one part of the increase section knitted a row higher than the other then?

I also put them back on the round after I placed the sts on the scrap yarn.

Does it matter where you put the two stitches back? Before I saw this, I added the sts back before the marker using m1 on the gloves I'm making.

Thank you so much!! I am knitting a pair of arm warmers. Some patterns are so difficult to understand.

This is so helpful! I have been staring at a pattern for days and just couldn't wrap my head around this whole gusset idea until now!

Could this method be used for finger down mittens too? Just in reverse?
