  • I wonder what that tasted like.

  • @PowerpuffOldandZfan It actually tasted like vinegar.

  • @pyrogyra72 BLEECH!!! I hate vineger. X{ Lol!

  • Fun fact: by 1959 90% of all major supermarkets in the united states had a restraining order out against the La Choy Dragon

  • Clean up on isle 4

  • Smaug's younger brother had a career in sales...

  • from lachoy dragons functions frank oz looks pissed in the suit I heard he hated it in there

  • Is that Beverly Owen, the first Marilyn Munster?

  • *Breaks everything*

  • You better buy these damn noodles or the La choy dragon will rip your fucking head off.

  • I'm going to get me some LaChoy!

  • dragon: *leaves store*

    me:*looks at mess* WTF!!!!!

  • Jim Henson is the most good.

  • where am i supposed to get dragon fire

  • If you're on the East Coast, don't miss out on the Jim Henson's Muppets expo at the Museum of Moving Image til September!! It's brilliant - especially Wilkins & Wontkins!

    ☆☆☆☆☆

  • I'm shocked! A vintage commercial was as funny then as it is now! I NEVER thought I'd see the day.

  • if that were a commercial on TV today it would be just as effective and original as it was then, maybe more so

  • Beverley Owen (the first/best Marilyn Munster) is the mom here.

  • This is hilarious. I want some chow mein cooked in dragon Fire! Good ol' 60s. Golly shucks. Feed your kids food cooked in dragon fire and when they join a commune and drop acid and you'll make the connection. "I saw dragons in Winn-Dixie when i was a kid but no one believed me. . ."

    LMFAO.

  • I've seen this dragon on a museum! The teeth are blackened from the flames.

  • I ate some la choy a few days ago....just heat it up and put it over rice and call it chinese lol

  • like a dragon in a supermarket

  • Love the commercial, but if they said that it was cookied in dragon fire... They'd have to include something at the bottom that says "not really cooked in dragon fire because you're too stupid to know dragons don't exist" or else they'd get their asses handed to them in a law suit.

  • @MrPacMan36 Maybe they call their cooker "Dragon"?

  • @MrPacMan36 - I guess people back then weren't as stupid as they are today. They didn't need disclaimers to state the obvious back then.

  • wow, what.

  • This is my favorite thing on the internetz right now.

Though the first time i heard it, I thought she says 1200 cub scouts, not 12 hungry cub scouts. That would have been epic.

  • Incredibly awesome

  • Later that dragon would go on to voice Rowlf the Dog!

Jim Henson was a gift to humanity. The Muppets were and still are hilarious.

  • Bolshy yarbles

  • @etaoin17 great bolshy yarblockles

  • Don't mess with dragons, because to them you are crunchy, and taste good with ketchup.

  • Barney's alcoholic brother?

  • quick cooked in dragon fire...truth in advertising lol :p

  • Damn dragon is makin a FUCKING MESS!

  • just saw this playing at the Jim Henson Exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. SEE IT TODAY!! AND REMEMBER YOU HEARD IT FROM THE LACHOY DRAGON!!

  • By the way, the cub scout mom is Beverley Owen, AKA "Marilyn Munster."

  • I couldn't stop laughing after the dragon yells "buy some today!"

  • Do not meddle in the affairs of a dragon...

  • that guy used to scare me

  • These Henson commercials are awesome!! I've been watchin' these since 4 in the morning!! AWESOME POST!!

  • Frank Oz was in the costume. :)

  • I think if I saw this as a kid I'd want La Choy even if I didn't know what it was.

  • According to Malcolm Gladwell, this dragon costume was the basis for Big Bird when Sesame Street was created. This is pop culture history, my friends.

  • love

  • "Cleanup in the ethnic-foods aisle..." LMAO!

  • What does the grocery clerk say when he extinguishes the fire? I've never been able to make it out.

I like to imagine he's grumbling "Fuckin' dragon..." in dismay, as though the La Choy Dragon wrecks his shop at least three times a week. He's just fed up.

  • I always thought he said something like 'That's swell..." sarcastically.

  • @samu3lk All kidding aside, it really does sound like our grocer is muttering "Fucking dragon" as he extinguishes the flames. (And to answer another poster, I'm not sure that's Charlie Callas, though it does look something like him.)

Meanwhile, if our Cub Scout were a little more industrious, he'd be restacking those cans pronto. It'd get him ever closer to that Bear badge. Baden-Powell intended Scouting to be more than just sitting around eating canned water chestnuts and bean sprouts.

  • I heard on the Smithsonian exhibit "Jim Henson's Fantastic World" podcast that although the voice is Jim Henson's, the performer in the puppet/suit is Frank Oz. What amazes me is that the puppet was built so that the head could be operated either left-handed or right-handed, with the other arm slipping into either sleeve as the shot called for. This brilliant blend of puppetry and editing make 'Delbert' the dragon seem even more lifelike.

  • That dorgan is HUAYZTED!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow, I miss Jim Henson. What an insane and creative guy.

  • No wonder kids are soo messed up...lol...Rawr!

  • I want my lunch pre-cooked in dragon's fire!

  • A hilarious commercial by a company that makes the absolute worst-tasting soy sauce on the market!

0:31 (Let me get up in your face and tell ya)one more thing!

  • Wonderful!

  • Ha Ha Ha! Pure and ridiculous GENIUS!

  • The guy with the fire extinguisher is saying "Right, right"

  • Lolz

  • Amazing!!!!!

  • I could never make out what the guy with the fire extinguisher is saying.

  • 0:42 was totally hilarious.

  • got to love the end 0:56 fantastic. " Because its quick cooked... in dragon fire. "

  • That and the angry-sounding BUY SOME TODAY!!! (DAMN IT!!!).

  • LOL Maureen Johnson.

  • Maureen is so random.... XD

  • This is awesome. There is nothing else to say, other than that it is awesome.

  • That's really awesome for some reason o.O

  • Maureen has just been going through old adverts.

  • Geez...this is sad...I think I remember this.

    Damn I'm old!!

  • The way the dragon puppet was operated (with a small TV screen in the body) was later used for Big Bird.

  • OMG THAT EFFING HILARIOUS!!!

  • Just Curious, Anyone Know If That Dragon Appears In ANYTHING Else?

  • Wow! A real dragon!!

  • 0:18 is funny as hell. bitch like you gonna argue with a dragon. it could be slop and you'd still be on that dragon's jock

  • 0:31 is fucking gold.

"oh, and one more thing. TRY LA CHOY NOODLES!" *BASH*

  • I think that is the same person who did Rowlf's voice in the muppets

  • Jim Henson did the voice. Frank Oz was in the suit. They showed this at the travelling Henson exhibit, this year, at the EMPSFM.

  • "I'M THE LA CHOY DRAGON!!"

  • It would be nice if they did a sketch with him in the kitchen with Swedish Chef and Jacques Roach.

  • i like when the guy comes in and extinguishes the fire. i bet he walked away and was like "i fuckin hate my job, why is there a fuckin dragon in my store anyways"

  • Read Michael Davis's "Street Gang: the Complete History of Sesame Street", p. 85. He describes this early Jim Henson ad, with Frank Oz inside the dragon costume. I wasn't familiar with this ad, but after reading about it in "Street Gang", I had to look it up!!

  • @mhfcampbell You know Frank Oz Hate being in the dragon costume and Jim Henson knew Frank would hate it.

  • Dragonfire ha ha i luv it

  • This is simply amazing...humor way ahead of its time indeed.

  • What DO you feed 1200 cub scouts?

  • You feed them pirate food!

    ...Which actually just other pirates.

  • I think is was 12 hungry Cub Scouts

  • Heh, I love how that boy shouts in amazement "GEE, A REAL DRAGON!"

  • I wish more adverts were like this.

  • Man this is old! This is from 1968.

  • ROFL my dad told me about this commercial for years, he was right, it's AWESOME!

  • The LaChoy Dragon should get into screamo music :P. My point being based off 0:34 to 0:40. Mhm.

  • Hahaha, Jim Henson was fucking awesome.

  • Classic. Oaf dragon.

  • I would so watch the 1998 Godzilla more if the La Choy Dragon was the star of it.

  • genius

  • It's the whole 'bull in a china shop' schtick. That's why I love it.

  • i like how he knocks things off the shelves

  • Damn, that rocks!

  • Was this a canned Chinese food commercial or a PSA on the dangers of tripping on acid in a supermarket?

"Wow a real dragon... Mommy, why the walls are melting?"

  • BITCH YOU STUPID.

    This commercial is fucking EPIC.

  • buy some today, or ill knock over piles of cans!

  • Wao a reel dragin!

  • So, where does one get some la choy? It's gotta be good if a dragon is selling it.

  • This commercials was one of the rare times that Frank Oz actually performed inside a full-body Muppet. After having to stumble around in a hot, pitch-black costume, he said "Never again!" :)

The dragon was designed by Kermit Love, who just recently passed away. A few years after this ad he built what was arguably his most famous full-bodied Muppet, Big Bird.

  • I love how creeped out the mom is.

  • I love how he's like a real dragon, causing more destruction than getting any point across :)

    Good old Henson.

  • @nutherefurlong Hilarious!

  • WHO ARE YOU!?

OMG so funny. What year is this from?

  • He's Batman!

  • Yeah, as a kid back then, I remember the "fear" of everything, from cartoons killing each other, to Santa Claus threatening you to be good & Gods gonna get you, AHHHHH, I still have nightmares. Remember when kids used to be scared of teachers? Not like that now huh?

  • BUY SOME TODAY!!!

(implied threat) OR I'LL BURN YOU!!!!

  • RIP Kermit Love.

  • Dude, anything the Great Oz touches is fantastic.

  • Frank Oz, always awsome!

  • what the hell...

  • hilarious

  • well, they sure don't make commercials like they used to...

  • Thanks a lot for posting this.I've always wanted to see this.

  • Say, I believed they showed this same commercial on the Muppets 30th anniversary show.

  • one of the GREATEST muppet specials

  • whoo!! vintage Jim Henson commercials. I want to bring back the La Choy Dragon in a movie

  • or how about a new commerical!

  • The mother in this commercial is played by Beverley Owen (real name: Beverley Ogg, according to IMDB). Beverley was the original Marilyn on "The Munsters" for the first dozen or so episodes, but I think she looks a lot better here without that horrible blonde wig she had to wear on the tv series. (And "Ogg" sounds like a better name for the dragon!)

  • And the guy with the fire extinguisher was Charlie Callas - he had a kind of oddball shtick based on making funny noises.

  • This is hilarious!!!

    "Buy some TODAY!"

    That's pretty imperative XD

  • The EPA banned dragonfire as a direct result of this ad.

  • This is the best commercial ever!

  • This commercial shows why it's IMPERATIVE that when you take a dragon out for a gig, he needs an escort to watch out for that dang tail! I know...I escort two of them!

  • my 18yr old noticed that it was "Rolf" the dogs voice! It was so funny. I don't remember this commercial but wouldn't it be great if more of them these days used scouts??

  • YES

  • LOL! Timeless!

  • Funny! This is truly one of those ads that was ahead of its time. La Choy needs to do more ad campaigns.

  • "buy some today!" " i will! i will!" "and remember you heard it from the la choy dragon!" smash smash crash. lol too funny

  • Charbroiled is a poor second to dragon fire....kewl video

  • funny

  • I'm pretty sure that was Jim Henson, not Frank Oz. And the dragon appeared in at least 3 other commercials. Great ad ... the product -- no so much.

  • Jim Henson did the voice, Frank Oz wore the costume

  • Yes, and Frank Oz hated performing the LaChoy Dragon. That is why he doesn't perform a lot of full-bodied Muppets. I think the only other full-bodied characters he performed were a few occasional monsters, such as Thig or Splurge.

  • Comment removed

  • I can't help but think that this is false advertising. "Cooked in dragon fire", eh...

  • It's a slogan, promoting how much it tastes like the take-out kind.

  • Big and stupid dragon lol

  • I've heard of this! Frank Oz hated performing the LaChoy Dragon since it was a full-body Muppet! :P

  • Frank Oz? It sounds like Jim Henson to me.

  • 1. Now I know why LaChoy is so darn good--Dragon Fire!

    2. Creeeeeepy!

  • alllright I am glad that you reposted this back on.
