If you're on the East Coast, don't miss out on the Jim Henson's Muppets expo at the Museum of Moving Image til September!! It's brilliant - especially Wilkins & Wontkins!
This is hilarious. I want some chow mein cooked in dragon Fire! Good ol' 60s. Golly shucks. Feed your kids food cooked in dragon fire and when they join a commune and drop acid and you'll make the connection. "I saw dragons in Winn-Dixie when i was a kid but no one believed me. . ."
Love the commercial, but if they said that it was cookied in dragon fire... They'd have to include something at the bottom that says "not really cooked in dragon fire because you're too stupid to know dragons don't exist" or else they'd get their asses handed to them in a law suit.
just saw this playing at the Jim Henson Exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. SEE IT TODAY!! AND REMEMBER YOU HEARD IT FROM THE LACHOY DRAGON!!
According to Malcolm Gladwell, this dragon costume was the basis for Big Bird when Sesame Street was created. This is pop culture history, my friends.
What does the grocery clerk say when he extinguishes the fire? I've never been able to make it out.
I like to imagine he's grumbling "Fuckin' dragon..." in dismay, as though the La Choy Dragon wrecks his shop at least three times a week. He's just fed up.
@samu3lk All kidding aside, it really does sound like our grocer is muttering "Fucking dragon" as he extinguishes the flames. (And to answer another poster, I'm not sure that's Charlie Callas, though it does look something like him.)
Meanwhile, if our Cub Scout were a little more industrious, he'd be restacking those cans pronto. It'd get him ever closer to that Bear badge. Baden-Powell intended Scouting to be more than just sitting around eating canned water chestnuts and bean sprouts.
I heard on the Smithsonian exhibit "Jim Henson's Fantastic World" podcast that although the voice is Jim Henson's, the performer in the puppet/suit is Frank Oz. What amazes me is that the puppet was built so that the head could be operated either left-handed or right-handed, with the other arm slipping into either sleeve as the shot called for. This brilliant blend of puppetry and editing make 'Delbert' the dragon seem even more lifelike.
i like when the guy comes in and extinguishes the fire. i bet he walked away and was like "i fuckin hate my job, why is there a fuckin dragon in my store anyways"
Read Michael Davis's "Street Gang: the Complete History of Sesame Street", p. 85. He describes this early Jim Henson ad, with Frank Oz inside the dragon costume. I wasn't familiar with this ad, but after reading about it in "Street Gang", I had to look it up!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm just joking about the last thing, obviously enthusiasm is necessary for a commercial, but i mean i love muppets and their commercials, etc, but this is just dumb and annoying.
This commercials was one of the rare times that Frank Oz actually performed inside a full-body Muppet. After having to stumble around in a hot, pitch-black costume, he said "Never again!" :)
The dragon was designed by Kermit Love, who just recently passed away. A few years after this ad he built what was arguably his most famous full-bodied Muppet, Big Bird.
Yeah, as a kid back then, I remember the "fear" of everything, from cartoons killing each other, to Santa Claus threatening you to be good & Gods gonna get you, AHHHHH, I still have nightmares. Remember when kids used to be scared of teachers? Not like that now huh?
The mother in this commercial is played by Beverley Owen (real name: Beverley Ogg, according to IMDB). Beverley was the original Marilyn on "The Munsters" for the first dozen or so episodes, but I think she looks a lot better here without that horrible blonde wig she had to wear on the tv series. (And "Ogg" sounds like a better name for the dragon!)
This commercial shows why it's IMPERATIVE that when you take a dragon out for a gig, he needs an escort to watch out for that dang tail! I know...I escort two of them!

Yes, and Frank Oz hated performing the LaChoy Dragon. That is why he doesn't perform a lot of full-bodied Muppets. I think the only other full-bodied characters he performed were a few occasional monsters, such as Thig or Splurge.
