Rooting is getting "root" access to your phone. This is the Linux equivalent of administrator rights in Windows. With android phones you don't need root to install non-market apps. However, you do need root to tweak certain settings of your phone (install custom roms, kernels, etc.).

@condo45 no i actually decided i didn't want to used cracked apps any more :P I like supporting the devs now, and id rather get them from the market as i can then update etc. really easily, I had just come over from WM so was used to having all apps for free, bet then realised that unlike WM the apps were good and the devs needed supporting :) I kept this vid up as people still need to know how to install apps from APK's for loads of reasons.

I like to use bamoka.com for my apps, they add the top downloaded (normally paid apps), to the front page and update 2 or 3 times a day. most of the apps I never need but I found quite a few useful apps in there.

Just a warning though, the apps are cracked (warez). So its probably illegal but hey, more beer for my weekends ;-)

I went down the cracked app path until I realised that many of them had free alternatives that were actually better. Also it should be mentioned that cracked apps are much more of a security risk than apps from Market. If you can trust the source then no problems but their are viruses/malware out there that come from repackaged apps.
