  • Great Video.I wonder when those Racist Bastards at the BBC will show it.

    I doubt it though.

Thanks for the post.Great to see Ghana going forward.

  • so what its is the only mall in Ghana wow .

  • so what its is the only mall in ghana wow .

  • I think it would have been better if we could see the sights, Not just the lights.

  • lool i remember A-life!

  • ACTUALLY there are plenty of things which represent the ghanaian culture. They sell TRADITIONAL GHANAIAN clothes. Trust me, I'VE BEEN THERE! So think before you speak.

  • @misslaure221 Did it occur to you that may be they are now selling traditional clothes because of constructive criticism like this video made years ago. The next time I am in Ghana I will do an update. Ghana is better today and will continue to get better because there are people who choose speak up and participate in its development. Those who just sit on their behinds and take whatever is dished out are of no good to Ghana; .... so take your own advise and think before you speak

  • WOW!! its HUGE!! YEEAAA GHANNAAAAA!

  • Have you guys considered the possibility that there are other reasons why you don't see a lot of native goods being sold at Accra Mall? By they way, they do sell native goods, just not a lot of them. I posed this question to a big time arts and crafts dealer as to why he has no presence at the Accra Mall.

His answer was, the rent is too high that he'd had to sell a 50 cedi item at 250 cedis just to break even. In other words, good old capitalism is at work here, not discrimination.

  • The mall is fantastic,, I hope to see it, in March 2011,, when I visit, and I hope to work with the NGO in Accra, with the children, keep up the good work, Ghanaians

  • Accra is so attractive and it makes Ghana what it is.

Accra is the main capital city of our country, but it so full of life and warmth.

When you visit it Ghana and when you land at the Kotoka Airport, then you wouldn't stop entering the Accra life of expectation.

I have lived there twice and it was a lifetime for me and I will be in Ghana hopefully by next year.

  • cool

  • wow im soooo proud of my people

  • i think they should build more mall in ghana.the place looks fine.i think not many people can afford to buy stuff there but it still cool though

  • omgg fromm ghana but i rep ATL SHAWTYY lol ... haha i cant wait to go back there

  • Maybe if the mall sells the same stuff as malls everywhere else in the world ... its because Ghanans buy and wear the same stuff as the rest of the world? Rather than "traditional" stuff ...

  • I know how multinationals operate in countries like Ghana, so I only hope its a Ghanaian "own" mall!!!!!!

  • Too bad those TV's aren't compatable with American plug outlets.

  • Comment removed

  • This looks like any other mall in Atlanta today. More like this to come. I heard there's an apple store in this mall.

  • @kakompo Yup! There is an Apple shop in Accra - except that you will pay like twice or thrice what the product should normally cost.

  • @igotshox Oh man that sucks. So you can buy an iphone in the US for far less? U thought it was supposed to be less rather than much more.

  • @kakompo

iphone sells cheaper in USA than the rest of the world... just to let u know also beside the fact that GH is crazy about that automatically shift the price.

"demand and supply as in economics"

...and also it could be one borga wey want make money! as that apple shop is not the real deal just a replica being customized :)

  • @nasdiemx hehehehe No doubt about that. All of a sudden GH is crazy about the iPhone and Blackberry. Probably only expatriates would be buying iPhones from this Accra Mall location. Some borga come build dat one 4 there? U sure say dat no be original ? Apple go bore if them find out then

  • I haven't been back to Ghana since 2005. I should be going this year but i must say, i'm quite impressed by these new developments..

  • I'm actually going to Ghana this Summer for a study program, I'll check this out, but I don't imagine Id spend much time here. The background music's pretty catchy...

  • Thanks for this, This mall was being built last time I was in Ghana and I wondered how it all turned out. There seems to be parking! Imagine that--I love all the traditional markets but it will be nice for we non Ghanaians who have no clue where to find things at Makola and the like to go here once and awhile. Medaase Papaapa.

  • @barbarajallen i am assuming though if this mall never existed and u were visiting u would have at all cost found a way of finding places where ghanaian exhibits can be purchased. So being that they are not popular in this mall does not stop anyone from gaining access to them.

  • Some people seem to be making a big fuss about this mall. They are the same people who make a big fuss about everything else. This is just one place in Accra that has a collection of goods and services. If anybody doesn't like the goods and services represented in this one place, they are free to choose amongst dozens of other places in Accra that offer alternative goods and services, including, Makola market, Kaa Jaanorh, Osu market, and Agbogbloshie market.

  • this is real nice..im proud of Ghana

and are the stuff there expensive?

  • I think all those ingnorant people out there have to go and reducate themselves before fartulating out of thier mouths .

One Mall !! People appreciate it and hope for more. Traditional items could be sold in a mall too. if you don't like the idea keep your opinion to yourself and go to mokola market. There should be mall in Ghana and in every city in Africa as well as street markets. Too much meat in the soup does not spoil it everyone has thier own taste at preference.

  • Hello ChiefKenneth,

If your idea of an ignorant person is the one that questions and critiques things as they are, then I feel sorry for you. I am glad that you accept the premise that there are differing ideas, tastes and preferences. Then accept my opinion that a Mall in Ghana should INCLUDE Ghanaian tastes and traditions and not simply copy western ideas. Have a pleasant day.

  • so u guys r not happy ghana has something like that!

  • Yes, too western indeed. I dont like such places even in Europe.

Better a dusty and noisy open air market than an air conditioned shopping mall.

  • Let's stop stereotyping Africa. People saying that the mall takes away from the "natural experience"....do you guys know that there is only ONE western style mall in Accra (soon to be 2) so how is 1 mall out of dozens of busy and bustling markets, street traders and other vibrant experiences taking away from Accra/Ghana. Stereotypes are not good, doesn't matter if it is meant as a "back handed" compliment or not. If u knew about Ghana's development in the last 18 yrs u would understand this.

  • What is your rational or how do you explain why native or tranditional items are not sold at the mall? Why can't vendors sell both western and traditional items. The stereostype you speak of is one Ghanaians have created for ourselves.

  • Ghanaians creating stereotypes based on what is being sold in a mall??? Really? Look, I'm not sure why native goods aren't sold in the mall but I'll assume that u know that carvngs and ornaments are sold at the Arts Centre and there is Makola Market and Osu night market, to name a few. My point is Accra Mall (1 mall) not selling native items has nothing to do with stereotypes, it's people's preconceived romanticised or negative viewsof Africa that build the stereotypes not items sold in a mall

  • The Accra Mall is a show case and very impressive. How can such a show case have nothing representative of Ghana's culture and not raise an eyebrow from a visitor. Everything about this mall is Eurocentric. This is just an observation while I was at the mall; I am not stereotyping anything. The irony about my visit was - I went to Ghana looking for native and cultural stuff, while I found Ghanaians in Ghana cherishing the European stuff - music, clothes, etc. This was an observation & a fact..

  • I think we have to agree to disagree. Ghana maintaining tradition and identity is important, but we seem to view expression of identity differently and no doubt have different experiences.

  • @sikanua for one you can easily have access to merchandise or souvenir that is representative of ghana, anywhere in ghana. The fact that, the mall is too western as you put it, is the whole idea. It gives a lot of people that dont like traveling as much, such as my dad, and others who dont have the opportunity of traveling some idea or access to what the western world has to offer and i think it is a brilliant idea and so does other foreign nationals who frequents ghana a lot.

  • @sikanua

You are lying thru your teeth.Just admit that this scene just does not fit in with your pre-concieved ideas of what Africa should look like.Like someone already said, it's not like there are 100's of malls in Ghana.Still plenty of "cultural stuff" to be found I am sure.

  • @sikanua well what stops you from being the one to take initiative and sell traditional items. People always criticizing what others are doing, but dont do anything themselves. You probably dont have an idea how much it costs to lease a place at that mall, thus why people dont see the long term gain in selling traditional items or letting them take up space in their shops/stores.

  • im from detroit michigan and there are alot of africans there. and guess what that dont matter when your in a city full of africans. granted my so called ancestors were brought over to amerika by force but we still fought the whites head to toe, city to city, state to state. im starting my business in africa. growing up in detroit showed me that there are dangers in your own back yard. id rather go to africa and see if i can help and make a decent living over there.

  • FUCK ALL U HATERS !!!!

everyone wanna make africa their own streyotype & shit. But when africa ( GHANA in this case ) show the world that it also has class???

    NOW YA'LL WANNA HATE ????

    FUCK YA'LL VERY MUCH !!

I LOVE GHANA & IM A BLACK MALE AMERICAN TOO !!

  • @MMAJISTY errr, Malls dont represent class, they represent unsustainable consumerism and generally are inhabited by teenagers and uneducated people,,,,,,,,,I think people are concerned that Africa has the choice about where it is headed

  • Respond to this video... and those westerners that have been to Ghana and see all the positives about the place and where it could go and what it could aspire too,, are disappointed when you take the lowest parts of western culture adopt them as development,,,,,,,,this has to be a concern.

  • I didn't feel like I was in Ghana when I was in that mall. I didn't like it.

  • Well. The mall is more of an "ultra western" experience. The place is supposed to make people "feel Ghana" but it's the opposite. But in all, a very nice place indeed.

  • of course its western influence

i see a lot of english.

its designed for rich and rich tourist

  • yeah I totally agree with you that the mall does actually really look western, infact too western, something more natural would do for me.

Tourist want to see a more traditional everyday Ghanain life, we need more of that in Ghana I personally think.

  • What's the difference between "natural " and "western" style?

  • wow that mall looks beautiful, I want to go there now

  • Accra Mall is cool..Every single soul in Accra spends his or her weekend in the mall...lol

  • not 2 shabby

  • Never been to Ghana. Would love to visit.

  • why are they still selling stuff on the road they need to let the goverment do something about that

  • i miss GHANA !!

i miss LCS, i miss the food, i msis the people !!

Be it Europe, USA, Japan, wahtever...none of these places are as good as being at home =)

  • No doubt about that. Home is always where the heart it. Abrokyire abrabo 3ny3 easy. Make it a point to go visit whenever possible.

    GHANA IS THE FUTURE !

    STOP HATTING !

  • We all must be there..How much do I need to cill there lol..Some kind of million..I heard ladies comearound just to get a date..Is that right?..mm..

  • I was there last August and it was a sort of novelty really but it did not feel like a very inviting place. I don't think the average Ghanaian will find much of interest there and certainly not much that is affordable. Hopefully something more in the middle will be developed for a friendly and more affordable consumer experience.

  • I couldn't agree with more, kbee. Best wishes

  • thanks!

  • well we have lot of local markets .jus one mall dnt change anything ..it makes Ghana a better place to live and not run to the usa ..try and be real my Ghanaian sis or wateva u are

  • Cant wait to go there when i go back to Ghana

  • A must visit indeed
