i wrote a review about it too...there is one problem: it is in portuguese. i woud like to see somebody comment the first scene, and what it means to the rest of the movie...
God damn it I can't believe there is a girl on this planet that is nerdy and awesome enough to put up a YouTube review of A Serious Man. This is my favorite movie and I would marry this girl for being equal parts hip and lame enough to take the time to review it.
Coen Bros. got their taste of {non-religious} Judaism in a small Midwestern town that being their only option to search, does that mean 3400 years of Judaism is as portrayed?American Midwest the great melting pot.How Dutch,Norweigen,Polish,Jewish,Chinese are 2nd generations born in Midwest? Not in New York & many large USA cities,or Israel. The movie is great & asks many questions. It doesn't "leave as is".I came from that background & delved deeper 32 years ago into Torah, its more "serious".
Good review....I think you're absolutely right, this is the best Coen brothers film. Every scene is an enigma, nothing is ever certain, nothing is predictable. I've seen the film a few times (it's worth watching more than once) and all I can think of is the saying, "Want to make God laugh?....tell him your plans."
To all the people who are perplexed/dissatisfied by the ending: all I ask is that before you write this off as an attempt by the Brothers to be "artsy", with no real substance... please consider how the ending relates to the prologue... I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. One of the most intelligent movies to come out of Hollywood in years...
I haven't heard that Burn After Reading wasn't any good as compared to the Coen Bros' other stuff. I thought it was great and I haven't heard very much negative feedback about it. Regardless, A Serious Man is near the top for the Bros...I'm from Minnesota and the daughter in the film (played by Jessica McManus) has been my neighbor for the past 12 years...very strange to watch.
Thanks for this review. Nicely done... I'm personally a Barton Fink fan and think its the Coen's best flick. Some friends were saying this one is right up there, sounds like it may be!
hi. i enjoyed watching your video, and i applaud the spirit inside of you that motivated you to put the time in to communicate your feelings about what you saw on the screen. it makes me happy to think that you will continue to hone your craft, and dig deeper within yourself, so that you may derive more information from the great works of art that you experience, which you can, in turn, communicate the meaning thereof with other people. a link you may find useful -
Yes, this movie is beautiful. Its about him fighting between what's morally right, and what he needs to do to survive, and the uncertainty of everything around him, and all these things that keep going wrong, that he has to try and fix. Its about what life does to you, and how horrible, and ridiculous the people in it, and the randomness of it all is.
I hope this movie is nominated for Picture or at least Screenplay. I can't believe the Golden Globes snubbed it in the comedy category for the Hangover and 500 Days of Mediocrity.
I've seen the movie four times. It does satirize the "Conservative Movement" which is a Jewish branch that was created in the mid-twentieth century.
I was wondering what you thought of the first eight minutes of the film which set in mid-nineteenth century Eastern Europe and is in Yiddish with subtitles.
judaism takes pride in raising more questions than giving answers. it does not claim to be the end all answer to everything, the old saying two jews three opinions .
I disagree. I think they are trying to say that we only really know that we don't really know anything. That's about all we comprehend. This idea ties in with the semi-resolved ending.
Love the review. I agree that one of the main messages in the film is to not look for meaning where there is none. As the quote at the beginning of the movie says "Receive with simplicity everything that happens to you."
Great Review! I love the Coen brothers and A Serious Man is coming out where I live tomorrow so I'm going to see it very soon. O and by the way you have some awesome posters! Lawrence Of Arabia,Jurassic Park,2001(I think) and Lord Of The Rings!
Yes because Kubrick, Hitchcock are still active today. Tarantino, W.Anderson and Burton are nothing to the Coens. Paul Thomas Anderson is up there with the Coens though
I cannot wait to see this movie, I have loved the Coens since I was young, watching The Big Lebowski and Fargo as a child was magical to me, incredibly odd and original comedy met with brief moments of extreme violence. I would love to see this movie, thanks for the review, I needed to hear it from someone else.☺
Nice review once again, makes me definitely wanna check this one out. Coen's are my favorite modern day directors for sure. I've been waiting for this one for months.
the coen brothers said the opening scene was just a short story used as an introduction nothing more

what i liked about this movie is that it carries along a tradition of meaninglessness
in no country for old men, tommy lee jones is searching for an answer to humanity and brutality that eludes him
in fargo, margie solves the crime and is left pondering '..it's a beautiful day. i just don't understand it'
in burn after reading, the cia even says f 'fucked if i know'
but i think the big lebowski put it the most eliquently when jeff bridges checked his messages to hear 'we believe in nothing!'

Do you think the movie is a satire (or critique) of Jewish religion/culture (and, by extension,a satire of all reigions), or a defense of it?
EdiblePlanets 2 years ago
I think it satirizes the religion

I pretty certain that the uncertainty principle isn't 'jibberish.'

i dont think it is either. The Coen brothers are just saying that it is incomprehensible.

A Serios Man is without a doubt the most profound film I've ever seen in my life.
I was also one of the few who thought (as well as no country) it ended perfectly
