There not... if someone wants to get to Downie they'll probably have to get through Cote first. Downie can definatley fight but its better for Cote to take care of that since Downie can score (8 points in the last 8games). It was nice that Cote destroyed McGrattan but the 6-1 win for the Flyers is even better.

Obviously there is a scale of off season rust on most players at this time of year, so I agree that Dean should've been more aware. But he did move the puck ahead and "technically" should have been off limits. Downie was looking to hurt him bad or else he wouldn't have left the ice and dived into him. Cheap fuckin' hit if you ask me. Downie should thank all the refs and team matesfor protecting his pussy ass from the wrath of McGratton.
also, notice he was looking for a fight right after he made the hit. sending a message with a check is one thing, picking fights by headhunting is another.
McAmmond got a concussion because of watching his pass too long for one. Downie should've made him pay, and had he given him a clean hit i firmly believe he still would've gotten a concussion. The big deal was that Steve Downie jumped and went for the head, and thats where he gets dealt with heavily, you just cant do that. The league was right for cracking down on him for doing it.

There not... if someone wants to get to Downie they'll probably have to get through Cote first. Downie can definatley fight but its better for Cote to take care of that since Downie can score (8 points in the last 8games). It was nice that Cote destroyed McGrattan but the 6-1 win for the Flyers is even better.

This is almost as bad as Moore-Bertuzzi incident. 20-games is definatly not enough 50 is more like it. Boulerice dirty hit didnt even severly injure the canuck and he got a 25 game and Simon totally missed his target and he got 25

Obviously there is a scale of off season rust on most players at this time of year, so I agree that Dean should've been more aware. But he did move the puck ahead and "technically" should have been off limits. Downie was looking to hurt him bad or else he wouldn't have left the ice and dived into him. Cheap fuckin' hit if you ask me. Downie should thank all the refs and team matesfor protecting his pussy ass from the wrath of McGratton.

McAmmond got a concussion because of watching his pass too long for one. Downie should've made him pay, and had he given him a clean hit i firmly believe he still would've gotten a concussion. The big deal was that Steve Downie jumped and went for the head, and thats where he gets dealt with heavily, you just cant do that. The league was right for cracking down on him for doing it.

Wow...if that would've been a clean hit, then I wouldn't have had much to say. But seeing as how a) Downie left his feet, b) Downie went for the head, and c) I believe McAmmond suffered a concussion, though I don't know the severity of it...then he deserved all 20 games he got. There's just no room for cheap shots.
That, and how about Sami Kapanen getting into the middle of things? That's the most I've seen him play rough in his entire career.

Downie got sent down to the AHL today. With this and his previous history in the OHL, he'll never play a game in the NHL - he's a liability to any team.

If donwie just didnt leave his feet this would have been a clean hit, but man he got at least 2 feet of the ice before he hit him, McAmmond shold have not been admiring his pass but still thats a cheap shot considering its preseason, just before this Downie got leveled so i think he had some intent to injure

I'm a hockey fan by all means, but to say this is a O.K. hit is glorification of something which has gotten completely out of hand. A good, clean hit is always nice to watcg but this is just ugly. This is a potential career damaging tackle. A guy in Norway got sidelined for life after receiving a tackle which looked just like this one.
So hope you're wathing, Nervik, and hope you never do this again along with you NHL buddy.

You may be correct. He shouldn't be kicked out, but the NHL has to take this shit serious and I hope the punishment is more severe each time it happens until teams get the message.
Aggressive deliberate hits designed to injure and remove someone from a game need to be treated almost like a crime of violence. Tough game doesn't have to get dirty.

I'm pretty sure there is a 3 second rule in the NHL so that part was clean. He wasn't 2 feet in the air either...if someone can get that high on skates, they should be playing in the NBA. But he deserved 25 games, and I agree with what 2R3AL said, about what Bertuzzi did. If he can play after what he did to Moore, he should be able to play too.

he gets suspended for 20 games and the flyers cut him immediately by sending him to the phantoms, whom he can't play for because of his suspension, and he has to serve 20 games once he's back on a pro roster. say goodbye to a chunk of your career steve downie. and being permanently marked and targeted as a "head checker". such a stupid decision.

my god, i dont know how many of u can keep crying and complaining about this hit. the only thing that wasnt clean was that he left his feet. everything else was fine. macammond was watching the pass and wasnt paying attension, downie saw this and took him out. i think downie should get 10-15 games, not 20.
