Verse 1 - Reflects one's honest (genuine) attempts in life, though often unrequited

Verse 2 - Turns to a significant other who understands and cares

Verse 3 - Their relationship is damaged (possibly significant other only wanted sex)

Verse 4 - Finds hope again in humanity through others still acting benevolently despite their own pasts

Also, to me, the whole ". . . but then, but then I put my headphones on and play my tunes and then, and then . . ." is a defense mechanism of his to temporarily get away from the world by letting the music carry all the troubles away.
