Safin wasn't moving well at all in this match, he was still aching and trying to recover from the knee injury in 2005. I think he would have beaten Roddick in 3-4 sets had he been 100%. Not that Roddick was playing great either, but Safin was way, way off his best and still made it an extremely tight match, was up a break in the 1st set, was up 4-0 and serving in set two, and an unlucky netcord gifted Roddick the break in the 3rd. The 4th set was a pick em.

He argued line calls as per usual, and also was pissed about them not closing the roof after several raindrops. That was always his achilles heel. 2006 US open and 2007 AUS open, back to back GS tournaments, and he was starting to play better after coming back from injury, but he missed a golden chance to do more damage. Too bad.
You guys ever notice how Roddick tends to use his backhand slice approach crosscourt while he's way on the backhand side? What's up with that? He's not quick enough to run over to the other side to cover the down the line pass. Roddick got passed in that situation 2/2 times in the video footage alone.
If you upload some of the 2004 australian open match up your a legend. They were both much better back then, especially Safin, Safin after the 2005 knee injury is nothing compared to before. 2004 ao quarter was a classic.
Notice how Marat went out to acknowledge the crowd's support after the match, despite losing? Very rare to see such a thing from him.
